Dealing with horses always involves risk, whether you are racing them, trail riding them, showing them, doing dressage. the 29 female horse to race... she came second to big brown which was a big deal but the sadly after the race she collapsed due to two shattered ankles in the front end of the horse, it is sad she was a Beloved filly and we were all rooting for her all the way R.I.P Eight Belles :'( we will always remember you

I have an Ex Racer TB, beautiful boy, I can't even IMAGINE, what he and all those other horses must have gone through. I feel so Bad for all the horse that either died or had to be put down because of horse racing. they eally need to change the rules.
What a wonderful tribute to a wonderful horse. That sweet, sweet girl ran her heart out against the boys and came in second, against a monster like Big Brown no less. Barbaro was almost the final nail in the coffin for me where horse racing is concerned, but Eight Belles was definitely the straw that broke the camels back. I've not watched or wagered on a race since. They still have to make a lot of changes to protect the horses before I will even consider coming back to this game.
@DouglasReding - totally agree with you, I see 'BB's' trainer is likely to be busted for injecting stuff into some of the horses he has trained. You gotta wonder... Eight Belles was a fabulous filly.
This poor filly should remind alot of horse lovers of Ruffian. They were both great Fillys that come to such a tragic end. The horse racing industry should revaluate its priorities because 3 year olds are not structurally sound enought to be going these distances.. i relize that most of the trainers really care about thier horses but they really should be 4 or 5 before they can enter the derby or any of the other triple crown races..
She alway has been and always will be a champion. Now she can eternally race Personal Ensign and Ruffian through those lush,evergreen pastures of horse heaven.Though we miss Eight Belles,she is at peace now.and she is a pretty angel now.
One thing I must ask is why people think horse racing is so cruel because I am know people who are in the industry and nothing about them is cruel in how they treat there horses yes I will repeat myself there are cruel people in the sport but that is true for any sport involving animals. and thank you clith1 for basically calling me stupid one I own horses and play mounted games which involves horses and riders racing each other and as far as I am aware I am not cruel to my pony
I'd like to see what the differance in bone density is between horses now and 50 years ago. I have a feeling they are being breed to be smaller and wiry. Slender and more air resistant. Sad to think if thats what it is..Win the money, dispose of the horse.
I think its sad that Eight Belles trainer(who was one of the best in the business in my mind)was forced into retirement because of all the negative attention he got from Eight Belles.when it was NOT HIS FAULT. Breakdowns are a sad part of racing,but they happen

Horse racing isn't cruel. Racing is the natural ability of horses, accidents can always happen. They happen in every single sport on earth, none are more or less dangerous. It is the factors of accepting and remembering the person/animal they were when they were here. But death is not the end. She died doing what she loved. People should learn to respect that. God takes in all he's created and gives them life for eternity. God needed a pegasus, so he chose her. <3
most of the horses collapses while running a race bcz its too hard for them to run fast :( and its sad that she was the only filly in the race :( its the most sadtes I have ever saw I didn´t saw the race in the TV but I love horses and Eight Belles was one of them ;( REst in peace Eight belles you was a great race horse and really good friend :)
Eight Belles, after running the race, immediately collapsed. She was the only filly in the race, came in second to Big Brown. It was a big deal, due to the fact that only being 39(?) fillies have raced. After running the Derby, while being pulled up, she collapsed, and after finding she had compound fractures on both of her front ankles, she was euthanized. Sad story for such a lovely filly.
@StyleMisser She broke both of her front ankles. Do you know how much stress that would have put on her body if they tried to save her? If they were to cast up her legs, she would have to put all that weight onto her back legs, and she would have more than likely contracted laminitis in her back legs -that's why Barbaro had to be euthanized. As terrible as it may seem, sometimes humanely euthanizing is better for the animal then letting it suffer.
@Pepper9873 Called a SLING! We saved my horse that way. He broke both front knees.. We grabbed casts and hung him from the ceiling of the stable. Now he's happy as ever galloping in the pasture. Hmm What does that tell people!?

I cried when i watched this race i mean she was a AMAZING horse and the race had to end like this....I hated that day i really did cry when i saw her fall and had to be put down.... Poor girl! I really wanted her to win that day.. RIP!

Her and Barbaro were racing legends, always preserved in our hearts. The question is why do the best horses end there lifes on the track, or a deadly illness.

i do notice that a lot more american horses break down on the track than in british racing. i mean, british racing is more dangerous because we gallop longer distances and jump, but very rarely does a horse get seriously injured in jump racing, they throw their jockeys or falls, but 99% of the time jump back up and carry on racing and jumping! i dont get why that is. i wonder if it's the jockeys not knowing how to ride? they are always "ponied" down to the start, with other riders holding onto..

yes the death of Eight Bells is sad, but that does not make this sport cruel it is the bad apples, and also why are we so fired up about how cruel horse racing is when there are other sports where horses are dying like eventing, or steeplechase unless you count that with horse racing, and not all owners think of insurance there are some that ask is there a humane way that we can get our horse to the vet and try to save him? just think about it before you go calling people cruel you don't know

O yes competition is a part of horse society.In Laura Hillenbrand's biography on Seabiscuit she said that he would slow down and look his opponents in the eye and taunt them till the last minuet when he would deliver a burst of speed to win the race.
Just a sad, sad story. I felt bad for Larry Jones. To have this brilliant filly break down right in front of him and having Friesan Fire do terrible this year......just bad luck. On NTRA. c o m, there is a story about "A Rose For Eight Belles" or something like that.

And to the stupid comment below, most horses DO have closed knees by 2yrs, oh and what a surprise, we just happen to xray before we race. DUH.

Actually I'm an Equine Major so I'm guessing I know more about this then your dumbass,their knees don't close until they're 3,(if that)look it up.(Seen as i aced that test i'm right)Sadly many racehorses are just run for the money. Not the well being of the horse,hence why 2 year olds shouldnt be racing,seen as they're broke as yearlings.
The main problem with TB racing is they are breeding for speed not durability like in the old days. Also with a lot of horses running today you will see Northern Dancer on both sides of the pedigree. In or crossbreeding isn't good.
The problem with racing is 1)some of them dont want to run 2)those that do hurt them selves trying till the end and lastley they are started way too young,their knees arent even closed at the age of 3

Ouch. What hurts the most is being so close. You can't say it any better than that. Don't worry Eight Belles. For each Filly to fall there will be another to prove all those haters wrong. Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta are doing just that. Rest in peace baby girl. You're up their with the greats.
It can be complicated but it depends on how bad the break was. If the bone broke through the skin there isn't much they can do but euthanize them because infection and bacteria can get real bad. If the bone hasn't broken through the skin most of the time they will try and operate and see how well a horse reacts to treatment etc..
I am not sure if they do this in TB racing but I heard of those fake legs(not sure of exact name) but it has helped quite a few horses in bad injuries.
It depends on how severe the injury. If a horse breaks its legs, there is normally not much anyone can do. Both legs, nothing at all. Horse's arent built to be able to support themselves on three legs. A lot of times the injury can be fixed if the horse is treated and given some time off to heal as long as it's not severe.
if the injury is fixable they will attempt to fix it but if its a really bad injury the most humane thing to do is to euthanize the animal. this is because if a horse brakes a bone in its leg it only has three left to stand on and an animal of that mass can not suport its own boby weight on only three legs and beause of that you just simply cant put a cast on it and call it a day.
if you do try and fix a bad brake the animal has to be suported off the ground with a harness till the leg can take weight again and that extended amount of time in the harness often leads to bed sore like lesion that are susceptable to infection and even if the horse gets past that and can walk again they almost always cant race anymore.
Okay, i know i'ts sad but it happens. LoveandPeace. Some horses bones are able to repair and if the owner has the right money. if not and if theyre in too much pain to make it, they decide it's too much for the horse. I know this because it's happened so many times to my friends horse. at least they decided not to make her suffer any longer and she was putdown on the track where she can run and run. so really it's life i'm not stupid i've seen this before, dont send me a nasty comment either.
They didn't even give her a chance to recover from it..... when Barbaro went down I cried so hard..... but they gave him a chance to recover... when he was recovered they sent him to a slaughter house.... the injury was so bad they couldn't repair it and it wouldn't have been fair to let her suffer. By the way they didn't send Barbaro to a slaughter house so stop trying to start crap. Barbaro's pain became unbearable and he lost the will to live...everyone says they're for humane treatment of animals, how humane is it to make them live and suffer in pain simply because we'll miss them if we lay them to rest?? That's selfish and it sickens me that people act this way...

My grampa thinks Fillys should noy race bc of that but she had the biggest Heart I have 1 mare who broke her leg go n around a barrel and I tried 2 stop her but she finished the run with a 14 and I won and now she is a pasture ornamint but girls r just as good as boys and they should not b rode that hard at such a young age.....**((We miss u))**.......

Horse Racing is not any more cruel than Three Days Events and Show Jumping. Accidents happen in EVERY sport. These racers LOVE to run. And thoroughbreds are equine royalty and treated as such.
Eight Belles was Awesome! Talk about heart & guts! She had it! Her accident can happen to any horse, anytime, anywhere without warning. Race horses put their life on the line everytime they enter the starting gate. They are delicate creatures that love to run & be competitive. I love horse racing and hate to see this happen but its part of the sport. Eight belles is up in horse heaven with some awesome company. RIP Big Girl We will always miss you!

As for corporations as a whole, including ones that race horses, are indeed, selfish. If a prized race horse dies in a derby, the corporation would more than likely care more about issues with profit. No money made on a dead horse.

Dealing with horses always involves risk, whether you are racing them, trail riding them, showing them, doing dressage. What is important is why the horses are performing for us, out of pure love for what they do, and for the people they do it for. What a wonderful tribute to a wonderful horse. That sweet, sweet girl ran her heart out against the boys and came in second, against a monster like Big Brown no less. Barbaro was almost the final nail in the coffin for me where horse racing is concerned, but Eight Belles was definitely the straw that broke the camels back. I've not watched or wagered on a race since. They still have to make a lot of changes to protect the horses before I will even consider coming back to this game.

This poor filly should remind alot of horse lovers of Ruffian. They were both great Fillys that come to such a tragic end. The horse racing industry should revaluate its priorities because 3 year olds are not structurally sound enought to be going these distances.. i relize that most of the trainers really care about thier horses but they really should be 4 or 5 before they can enter the derby or any of the other triple crown races..

One thing I must ask is why people think horse racing is so cruel because I am know people who are in the industry and nothing about them is cruel in how they treat there horses yes I will repeat myself there are cruel people in the sport but that is true for any sport involving animals. and thank you clith1 for basically calling me stupid one I own horses and play mounted games which involves horses and riders racing each other and as far as I am aware I am not cruel to my pony

I'd like to see what the differance in bone density is between horses now and 50 years ago. I have a feeling they are being breed to be smaller and wiry. Slender and more air resistant. Sad to think if thats what it is..Win the money, dispose of the horse.

Horse racing isn't cruel. Racing is the natural ability of horses, accidents can always happen. They happen in every single sport on earth, none are more or less dangerous. It is the factors of accepting and remembering the person/animal they were when they were here. But death is not the end. She died doing what she loved. People should learn to respect that. God takes in all he's created and gives them life for eternity. God needed a pegasus, so he chose her. <3

most of the horses collapses while running a race bcz its too hard for them to run fast :( and its sad that she was the only filly in the race :( its the most sadtes I have ever saw I didn´t saw the race in the TV but I love horses and Eight Belles was one of them ;( REst in peace Eight belles you was a great race horse and really good friend :)

Eight Belles, after running the race, immediately collapsed. She was the only filly in the race, came in second to Big Brown. It was a big deal, due to the fact that only being 39(?) fillies have raced. After running the Derby, while being pulled up, she collapsed, and after finding she had compound fractures on both of her front ankles, she was euthanized. Sad story for such a lovely filly.

@StyleMisser She broke both of her front ankles. Do you know how much stress that would have put on her body if they tried to save her? If they were to cast up her legs, she would have to put all that weight onto her back legs, and she would have more than likely contracted laminitis in her back legs -that's why Barbaro had to be euthanized. As terrible as it may seem, sometimes humanely euthanizing is better for the animal then letting it suffer.

... their bridles, and are imidiatly recaptured after the race. in the UK most jockeys go out hunting and ride regularly without any help, they do everything themselves and control the hroses well enough. in national hunt racing a jockey and a horse get to know each other so well after many years of partnership that the jockey knows exactly the moment when a horse becomes uncomfortable, and they pull up immediatly. also UK horses race untill they are 12 or 13 sometimes - not just 4!

i do notice that a lot more american horses break down on the track than in british racing. i mean, british racing is more dangerous because we gallop longer distances and jump, but very rarely does a horse get seriously injured in jump racing, they throw their jockeys or falls, but 99% of the time jump back up and carry on racing and jumping! i dont get why that is. i wonder if it's the jockeys not knowing how to ride? they are always "ponied" down to the start, with other riders holding onto..

yes the death of Eight Bells is sad, but that does not make this sport cruel it is the bad apples, and also why are we so fired up about how cruel horse racing is when there are other sports where horses are dying like eventing, or steeplechase unless you count that with horse racing, and not all owners think of insurance there are some that ask is there a humane way that we can get our horse to the vet and try to save him? just think about it before you go calling people cruel you don't know

She WAS a RACE HORSE, loved her job and tried her hardest, not becuase she was pushed but becuase she had it in her heart it. This isn't some backyard beauty or stable pony. One of the finest trainers in the world at her side no expense spared. Last, idiots, horses get hurt. I had a boarder who's colt snapped his leg turning in his paddock. And to the stupid comment below, most horses DO have closed knees by 2yrs, oh and what a surprise, we just happen to xray before we race. DUH.

The main problem with TB racing is they are breeding for speed not durability like in the old days. Also with a lot of horses running today you will see Northern Dancer on both sides of the pedigree. In or crossbreeding isn't good.

It can be complicated but it depends on how bad the break was. If the bone broke through the skin there isn't much they can do but euthanize them because infection and bacteria can get real bad. If the bone hasn't broken through the skin most of the time they will try and operate and see how well a horse reacts to treatment etc..
I am not sure if they do this in TB racing but I heard of those fake legs(not sure of exact name) but it has helped quite a few horses in bad injuries.

It depends on how severe the injury. If a horse breaks its legs, there is normally not much anyone can do. Both legs, nothing at all. Horse's arent built to be able to support themselves on three legs. A lot of times the injury can be fixed if the horse is treated and given some time off to heal as long as it's not severe.

if the injury is fixable they will attempt to fix it but if its a really bad injury the most humane thing to do is to euthanize the animal. this is because if a horse brakes a bone in its leg it only has three left to stand on and an animal of that mass can not suport its own boby weight on only three legs and beause of that you just simply cant put a cast on it and call it a day.

if you do try and fix a bad brake the animal has to be suported off the ground with a harness till the leg can take weight again and that extended amount of time in the harness often leads to bed sore like lesion that are susceptable to infection and even if the horse gets past that and can walk again they almost always cant race anymore.

Okay, i know i'ts sad but it happens. LoveandPeace. Some horses bones are able to repair and if the owner has the right money. if not and if theyre in too much pain to make it, they decide it's too much for the horse. I know this because it's happened so many times to my friends horse. at least they decided not to make her suffer any longer and she was putdown on the track where she can run and run. so really it's life i'm not stupid i've seen this before, dont send me a nasty comment either.

They didn't even give her a chance to recover from it..... when Barbaro went down I cried so hard..... but they gave him a chance to recover... when he was recovered they sent him to a slaughter house.... She proved to the world that a filly can be just as good, no, a filly can be better then almost any other colt. She showed the world that your gender doesnt define what you can and cant do.

Horse Racing is not any more cruel than Three Days Events and Show Jumping. Accidents happen in EVERY sport. These racers LOVE to run. And thoroughbreds are equine royalty and treated as such.

Eight Belles was Awesome! Talk about heart & guts! She had it! Her accident can happen to any horse, anytime, anywhere without warning. Race horses put their life on the line everytime they enter the starting gate. They are delicate creatures that love to run & be competitive. I love horse racing and hate to see this happen but its part of the sport. Eight belles is up in horse heaven with some awesome company. RIP Big Girl We will always miss you!

horse racing is so wrong and if you actually knew anything about horse racing then you would know how cruel it really is, you do make good points like they love to run... but horse racing is not the way that they should be galloping it is soo bad for them and what you said that this could happen to any race horse yeah EVERY race horse! race horses are used and then thrown away..... jerk
