Ericsson 4 skippered by Brazilian Torben GRAEL obliterated the 24-hour record run for a monohull when the team recorded a run of 593.23 nautical miles during leg one of the Volvo Ocean Race. The new mark translates into an incredible average speed of 24.71 knots in conditions not best suited for a record-setting run. GRAEL said: We are doing 30 knots of boat speed. The wind is around 28-32 knots but the waves (around eight metres) are not very good for us.
been offshore racing, and your right , the 446 hour watch cycle leaves you exhausted.still nothing like being 500 miles offshore in a blow.love to watch first timers, when they come up on deck. their eyes get soooo big looking at the seas!
Cheers! Nice choice of footage to post... finally, an unedited, non-hyped, straight-forward event sequence. Note: sure, the sea-motion is more-or-less smooth; they've got "it" dialed in for their desired magnetic heading and existing sea-state... not as easy as it looks to get a boat optimized for hours on end to fix at a forecasted meteorological waypoint. Got any more un-edited clips? Post onward benmoon.
This shows how unconfortable sailing this is. All this water on the boat like it is a huge surfboard. Only designed for speed with no regards to the crew. The camera is not mounted right which gives a bad image of an actually "smooth" ride:-)
This is racing, friends... not bluewater cruising on a 70' luxury boat. The crew is compensated. Besides, the experience is not this intense for the entire duration of the race. At some points, they ghost along at 3-4 knots. Other times, they've got a perfect beam reach in minimal swells. And that ride isn't smooth. Maybe you haven't experienced pounding through 8-10 foot swells from two different directions at 15-18 knots. It's anything but smoot
they might invert/flip, but they wont sink if they do, unlike mono's. and we compensated for that and are in the process of a selfrighting system of our own. and its fun when they flip. :D
Monos don't necessarily sink if they flip/capsize. Those here definitely don't, because they are build to float when filled with water, and they're able to right themselves as long as they still have their keel on.
Its amazing to think that the next team on deck are down below getting some sleep!!!!!

catamarans and triamarans go right over/through this stuff no problem, i would know from experience.
