Yes, the scenery is nice. The movie is beautifully shot, but that's not really a review. That's not the basis for a movie, that's the basis for an Advertisement for Chinese Tourism. The gratuitous exploitation of scenery is a blatant foil to try to mask how lousy the movie is. Apparently, every person in China lives within convenient driving distance of at least one beautifully restored section of the Great Wall, and Shaolin Mountain, for example.
Where's the scene where Miyagi took Daniel to that monastary to teach him about stillness and zen and all that jazz, where he squished a bug and offended the monks. It was replaced by a glitzy "Oooooh, it's all magical and kung-phooey" mountaintop temple where the dumb-ass kid drowned himself in a glorified fish bowl. Where was the lesson? Where was the teaching moment? All he did was walked up a hill and dunked his head in a fountain with a Yin-Yang symbol on the bottom. HOORAY FOR JADEN SMITH!

The reason I couldn't like this movie too much was because, to me, it felt like an attempt to clean up the image of the Chinese government. The reference of corrupt kung-fu not being representative of real kung-fu was clearly an attempt to dispell Westerners view that the Chinese government is corrupt. Other than that, the movie followed the original pretty well. 6/10 for me.

i agree that the movie provide a good enough reason why the chinese kids were bullying Jaden smith..the old movie used the ex girlfriend factor but...i think they should of emphasised some other aspect in this one for e.g. racism, so that 1) we feel more sympathy towards jaden's character 2) realistic portrayal of China's monoculturalism and racism towards foreigners. and it would have provided a realistic reason why the chinese kids were bullying jaden's character...imo

Agree. If you're going to shoot in China instead of Cali you've already dismantled the original storyline at that point. I think most of the reason was to cash in on the popularity of Mr. Miyagi as a character. I would prefer a fresh movie too, not a remake, in large part because most remakes these days suck and only serve to slay the original. I haven't seen this yet though. I plan on it in the next day or two. My expectations aren't very high so hopefully it will exceed them.

i agree that the movie provide a good enough reason why the chinese kids were bullying Jaden smith..the old movie used the ex girlfriend factor but...i think they should of emphasised some other aspect in this one for e.g. racism, so that 1) we feel more sympathy towards jaden's character 2) realistic portrayal of China's monoculturalism and racism towards foreigners. and it would have provided a realistic reason why the chinese kids were bullying jaden's character...imo

Agree. If you're going to shoot in China instead of Cali you've already dismantled the original storyline at that point. I think most of the reason was to cash in on the popularity of Mr. Miyagi as a character. I would prefer a fresh movie too, not a remake, in large part because most remakes these days suck and only serve to slay the original. I haven't seen this yet though. I plan on it in the next day or two. My expectations aren't very high so hopefully it will exceed them.
