I like the episode where Dietrich stops someone from squashing a cockroach, and then goes into a long speech about how the cockroach will be around, long after humans have destroyed themselves. Then, he looks down, stomps his foot, and says, "Got that sucker!" (Cue opening theme.)
I always thought it was too bad that they couldn't keep a woman detective on the show. Batista and Wentworth were great characters and there were a couple of others. I thought it was really great in the final episode that Barney remembered Wentworth.
Oh and by the way Barney Miller was an excellent show to watch slightly tuned-up, if you get my drift. A fact that was eventually acknowledged in the Moosh, Moosh, Moosh, hash brownies episode! Ah, the Seventies!
Dietrich was the bomb! Every line out of that guy's mouth was hilarious. And his delivery was so dead-pan. But you always new Dietrich had the facts, and was one step ahead of everybody. A great, one-of-a-kind character, from one of the all time great sit-coms!
Well, it's lovely to hear someone else expressing my thoughts exactly! Everyone on the show was a gas, but Dietrich really made it ESSENTIAL viewing all those years ago. WHEN are they going to give us the DVDs of all the series, instead of eking them out one at a time? Series 2 of course now out, but when will we get the rest?
Youtube can be depressing at times, I didn't know Steve Landesburg was dead till I searched for his name here.

Barney Miller...one of the all time great shows...lets have them all on dvd..great clip
and a look a James Gregory...what a riot!!
Inspector Luger what a wonderful character.

Luger is definitely a throw-back to the classic detective image of the 1940s.
