This is the best movie ever. I watch this every time I see it on TV. It's a complicated and long story, but this video was good. Only to bad it didn't go to deeply about the revenge part. How they took their revenge, and the part where they took revenge for Rico (the black/italian guy) and how they got away with it in the court. And de ending was also very sad, etlast they got their revenge. Btw at the end they said, it wasn't based on a true story. Still, the best movie ever!

I saw this movie for the first time a few weeks ago. I have a hard time sleeping now, or whenever its quiet and I'm alone. I keep thinking about what these boys went through and the reality that this really does happen bothers me deeply. Nobody, I don't care how evil or bad they are, should ever have to endure this type of thing.

@JuanMacready I've just watched it tonight on on La7 (an Italian tv channel) and, sorry if I say it, but on my opinion this film isn't homophobic at all. In fact, it isn't about homosexuality, but it's about pedophily in American reformatories and the consequences derived from this on children in detention. And in the end I don't think it encourages murder for revenge, but it just wants to say that violence generates violence. It's a matter of fact, after all.

The book is so much more gritty than the movie. It goes into more heavy detail about the abuse those boys endured. The movie was good, but I couldn't put the book down. It will break your heart.

actually if you watch the end credits they state that none of that is true, however this is still a good movie.

Actually if you read the end credits, you can learn that's true and based on the autobiography of 'Lorenzo' - it's not his real name of course - but that the american autorities deny all this story - therefore they say that it's not true -. That's all it is (read the credits once more ;)).

@ZanGrem there were 2 armed guards shot dead about that time up in an 11th avenue bar/HellsKitchen and would be about the time line in this movie ...their truck already made deliveries/no pick up and the motive was never figured out BUT those from that area and anyone else say from east harlem etc KNOW a debt was repaid and someone's honour restored....and i'm too tired to look for a link from either a nyc paper or the village voice.

please read the novel, its much much better than movie, but the movie just ok. This is the true story, its really inspire me on how the writer 'survive' while his friends cannot cope with their life after almost a year at juvenile. Its really a sad story.

I have left the subtitles (who are in french, because I'm french therefore it's why my english is so bad !) because I think they are very important at this moment of the movie. They say how and when Thomas Marcano (Billy Crudup) and John Reilly (Ron Eldard) are dead. The both have been killed by their ennemies (the guys of the others gangs in the street) and they just are 29.
