Sun Ra's vast career spanned half a century and his catalog was immense (his official discography lists 788 titles)....I was lucky enough to see him quite a few times in the 80s and 90s, and he changed not just my take on music, but on life and the cosmos. He's Ellington, Hendrix and Coltrane all rolled into one, a true giant who shaped the face of modern jazz...
Dude, there is absolutely no comparing the beetles and sun ra. The beetles make great songs, but as far as technical skill, number of songs, creativity, innovativeness, etc. goes, Sun Ra is much better. That said, the beetles are very, very good, but sun ra is a god. He always played the music that HE wanted. That's why he isnt as good as the beetles in the commercial sucess area, which is a rediculous thing, because todays commercially sucessful musicians are pretty much all musically retarded.
dude, there are people who don't know who the beatles are. sun ra is way more obscure. there are tons of people who don't know his music which is a shame. but he's not alone. there are many brilliant american musicians who have been totally ignored by mainstream culture.
i'm quite familiar with sun ra. his recordings and performances. last time i saw him was club lingerie in hollywood. i have no need to "check it out!" that wasn't the point of my comment. regardless of how good he is or whether he toured europe successfully or not, sun ra is still relatively unknown to most mainstream listeners. i.e. if people are now unfamiliar with the beatles (who were hugely successful all over the world) they are going to be more unfamiliar with sun ra.
i'm not sure i understand the need to compare them to each other. as i said in my original post, sun ra was, without a doubt, an extremely influential and brilliant artist. so were the beatles in their genre. anyone who can appreciate sun ra can probably appreciate the beatles but the reverse may not be true.
agreed! Actually, comparing cross genre isn't very sound....IMO. Hey, i've heard some funky Ra (i.e. UFO)....but i'm not sure...was there an "era" of funky Ra (like, rather than random funky songs) - do you know?
i'm only familiar with one sun ra track that might qualify as funk and then only with the loosest definition of funk. "disco 2100" has a kind of funky feel to it although i wouldn't classify it as funk in the usual sense of the word i.e. james brown, stax volt recordings, george clinton, prince, etc. apparently george clinton does claim to have been inspired by sun ra. it's clear that sun ra had no problem doing "pop" music forms. cont'd.
cont'd': when i saw him play in hollywood he did a version of "brother can you spare a dime?" with dave alvin from the rockabilly band, the blasters, doing the vocal. it was kind of awesome.
what about that UFO song he did? that's the subgenre of funk that i'm referring to. In general, funk like jimmie mcgriff and even funk like booker T and the MGs are my preference, although GClinton is obviously branded as funk as well...and not that he isn't good..but just not the type of funk i'm referring to
since you had already mentioned UFO, i didn't see any reason to mention it. i don't recall any other tracks along those line except "disco 2100." BTW, booker t and the mgs were on stax/volt. for me personally, funk doesn't the shape i love until stax volt, james brown, etc. that's why i said, funk is a loose term as a definition. one man's funk is another man's soul groove. know what i'm saying?
sun ra and the solar arkestra. sun ra was the adopted name of the band leader and composer (birth name Herman Poole Blount). the band itself was comprised of the some incredible musicians. sun ra was an extremely influential avant garde black american musician.
This track's actually by a Jazz band called Sun Ra from a 1978 album called Lanquidity. Not sure why it's been banded around with bit torrents of the Silver Mountain Reveries release.
I'm loving this!! Good tastes, Luv what you did on this video. Cool

do people exist that DON'T know Sun Ra? I hope not, Sun Ra might be the most wonderfully strange musical genius of all time.

yeah i guess so - however I would argue that sun ra is a bit better than the beatles....even if they are the tops commercially.

funk is a loose term as far as definition so that just my opinion.
