That depends on the rabbit I think. I have a Netherland Dwarf bunny named Boris and he's the sweetest thing ever. He does recognise me,and he does recognise my mum,who he hates lol. However,he is a house rabbit,so he's never really run away,but I think the main reason for why rabbits disappear is that they get eaten.I think they could find their way back because they aren't stupid,but surviving in the wild is hard for an animal who spent most of its life in a cage.

please don't put a leash on the rabbit. they're not like cats or dogs. a rabbits spine comprises only 13% of it's body weight and they can easily twist and break their spine while on a leash.

i know sice i have 9 and i would never leash them.

Actually, hay is the best thing you can possibly feed a rabbit. It gives them all the nutrients they need as well as ensuring their teeth do no become too long. I fed my rabbit hay all the time and she loved it! Brocolli, carrots and apples were a treat.

Go for a short haired dwarf, they're happy and playful with low demanding fur to groom (do not get a lion head unless you want to spend at least three hours a week on proper grooming ^^) Dwarf's are also a little more active.
