I don't mean to get off track, but look at Arab Spring...the arabs now want democracy too after 1000s of years of warlords and kings. They're a little late, but it's coming. no, i'm not that extreme...sometimes capitalism gets it right...it's just that econ is like art, there's not real formula that can predict what is going to happen. Capitalism drove these industries (railroad, steel, oil) to exploit natural resources. As a result, isn't our life more comfortable? Does it allow us greater freedom? It does. But there's a price that comes with it. The idea of a business with huge profits may be appalling, but democracy can allow government to tax the businesses

I don't mean to get off track, but look at Arab Spring...the arabs now want democracy too after 1000s of years of warlords and kings. They're a little late, but it's coming. As long as society begins to regulate in ways that promote the good and demotes the bad, capitalism can work well.

@dalecampbl8 i understand your view, but commonly, capitalism will prevent democracy. lets say that theoretically a third world countries government has 0 corruption and is purely looking out for the best interest of its people. if the government were to implement labor laws or necessary regulation, the country would lose all of the jobs that its people sadly had to rely on. this enables large corporations to basically hold third world countries hostage and destroying any chance for change.

Capitalism works too well at times for it's own good, hence the 2008 Wall Street crash. When a corporation has become too big to fail, it is just that, too big. Deregulation has allowed a consolidation in some industries that destroys the competition model. Without competition, there is no equilibrium between the producer (corporation) and the consumer (you and I). We must pay whatever we are charged for goods and services or go without.

it's all very perfect and sounds amazing but if you don't have the money to buy goods or you don't have the ability to produce goods you will be rejected from the system... at least in a communist society, in theory, no one is excluded because (1) everyone have a work, (2) have to work - not for their self well being, for the profit motive, but for the well being of all, the society as a whole, (3) a society in which all are considered human beings regardless what they have to give in exchange..

Propaganda is propaganda, which this is. I'm an American, and am immensely happy for the opportunities that I've been given, but am offended that we ever felt the need to produce video's like this. Of course, our country has had a history of pushing ideals (think McCarthy) just as much as anyone else, so we really can't say that we're any better or worse than they are.

@lunhil12 Unlike all those other people who got jobs at Walmart, and now can get the same products that Mr. Brown was selling, but at a lower price, so now he has more money to pay off debt, save, or even donate to a charity to help Mr. Brown.

@sdfgsfgbvdfv That wasn't marxism; even Trotsky was a great opponent of the stalinist system of USSR. You have to make distrinctions between stalinism and any other kind of socialism.

I like how they show the small businessman, "petty-bourgeoisie" which is NOT considered an enemy by Marx, as opposed to say a Mellon or a Rockefeller. Marxists are more concerned with AIG and Exxon-Mobil than some corner store weenie salesman!

Marx DOES think the petite bourg to be a problem, he warns that they are inherently conservative & only are revolutionary to protect their own interests....Trotsky later extends Marx's warning & develops a sound theory on their connection to the rise of fascism & the maintenance of capitalism.

@SpectacleofDebord Yes they may be conservative but they're not necessarily a class enemy. Marx wrote over and over about the petty bourgeoisie being squeezed out and "becoming proletarians themselves" as written in the Manifesto. That very fact alone makes them less relevant. As for fascism, it is big business and industry that finances the rise of fascism - any middle class support for this is an effect not a cause of fascism.
