This a terrifying message....Oh, we serve a loving but who has created a place called "hell" as punishment. Demons are everywhere and are many...Seducing spirits everywhere.......Oh what if Christ didn't come to die for poor sinners. I know men are wicked..flames of wickedness flow out of men's heart..Oh I know my heart and I've worked with natural men and teens who are just wicked-lie, noisy, hatred for their co-workers...Oh ye we deserve hell fire..Holy angels holy God won't all the time......
I'm required to read this sermon for my AP Composition class... As I was listening to it, I was thinking about how much I hated it. But then I realized that pastors preaching about hell are a rare breed nowadays, and realized what a great sermon this really is. It's good to get away from the fluffy "Oh, God loves you, he loves me, he loves everybody, yay!" aspect of Christianity and be reminded of the consequences of NOT following God...
However, this sermon kind of paints a rather negative pic
God hates sin and he will never except it Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.BUT he will forgive us if we repent and ask God for forgiveness
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
@stack45ny, actually, the text says, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life." (emphasis mine on the words whosoever and believeth)
I am right now working towards getting a theological education and becoming a pastor.... I want so badly to preach truth like Edwards did, but it is a truly scary prospect. Nevertheless, I know Christ will provide and will walk me through the difficulties that come with preaching the truth..... Thank you for posting this.
Unfortunately modern day Christianity only preach the love love love love of God. But many of these wicked ministers, pastors, priest, ect have fan the modern Christains to sleep in their a lukewarm godless/lawless state. They don't understand the LOVE of the Most High is equal to his WRATH. We all need to speedily repent, fast, pray and trust in the Most High son Yashuyah (Christ).
@mishaelf I cannot know exactly why your understanding of the Bible has ended up being so wrong, for I do not know you. With that said, I do have a suggestion...remove the video of the girl dancing erotically from your "Favorites" list, and repent of your sin. Living in sin can and will cloud one's understanding of Scripture. May God grant you the grace of repentance and knowledge of His Word.
Ah, the brutal honesty of the theologians and preachers of that time.... Alexander Campbell and many others around that time were always like this... very honest to the audience with theology. Preachers today really need to be the same way or else legalism and formalism would continue being an evil false prophecy in the church.
I would just like to take a minute and say: Love, peace and God's blessings to all Christians right now. And, we should be (as Christians) not only praying for those who do not know Jesus Christ, but we should also be praying for ourselves to be closer to God's word, so we can witness/bring the word of God to those who know Him and His son not.
I keep listening to it; and listening; and the terrors of Hell cause me to call out to the Most High for those who know Him not this day. "Enemies"? What enemies, what can man do to us - how this sermon has weakened my heart and pride to pray for those who we know who know Him not.
@MustardSeedish Interesting thought, sister. If all in your church knew of Jonathan Edwards, and your pastor announced "I am now going to preach a sermon by Jonathan Edwards," if they had never previously heard or read the sermon I think they would be quite shocked. Now, if they rather believed that the sermon was written by your pastor, I would very much like to be a "fly on the wall" of your church.
@stack45ny LOL! He's a man of good character so he would mention him by name. I would not want to be near his office or be near the switchboard if he did just read it like a sermon.
@MustardSeedish Haha...Oh, I'm sure he is a man of good character. What I suggested was hypothetical, for it is hard to imagine a preacher today preaching anything even close to resembling this Edwards sermon...I think most pastors would be afraid that most people would walk out...and I think most would walk out, sad to say.
@ACruceSalus1 I have to disagree with you on this, sister. It is the preaching of Christ crucified that saves:
1 Cor 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God...23 we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks[b] foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
@ACruceSalus1 A friend of mine at church asked our pastor to do it a couple of months ago. He laughed (probably nervously) at the idea. I think it would be good. Nobody preaches like that anymore.
I would be blessed to sit under preachers of the likes as Edwards and Spurgeon and the other Reformers and Puritns who preached biblcal truth so solidly.

@prittydeb Let's not forget believing. There can be no repentance without faith.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

@stack45ny Yes faith is the foundation of a christian's life. You can't live a christian's life without faith

@AncientHistoryBuff Actually, it depends on what Bible version one is quoting. I quoted the NKJV, while you quoted the KJV.

Listened to the whole thing. I would love if my pastor got up on the pulpit and just read this sermon just to see everyone's faces. Very sobering.

@stack45ny I get what you're saying. I laughted when I read your comment. I would be sitting there saying, "Yes, preach it, yes!"

@MustardSeedish It is a profoundly sobering sermon, though, isn't it? I remember the first time I heard it...thought provoking to say the least.
