Balanchine would have wanted his ballet on youtube to bring people to dance. Lincoln Kirstein, I think would also though you might have had to give him a few more reasons ...
If I am not mistaken Karin von Aroldingen received the rights to more Balanchine ballets than any other dancer, due to the love and kindness shown to him by her and her little family. I don't know which ballets she received, nor how she is controlling them.
The first time I ever went to a ballet it ws NYCB doing that. Suzanne Farrell was in Diamonds, Patricia McBride was in Rubies. Susan Hendl was in Emeralds and so was...hmm
I just found out that certain company -nycb uses youtube to advertice but would not let anybody make comments....hubris? I am amazed that they forget that youtube was meant for people to have a dialogue, a progressive way for people to share inf. If nyc ballet does not want to hear the people comment why are they here? PEACE
Lovers of the dance, do not forget that there is plenty of ballet in youtube. check the vagonova's prix, and the french prix. It is just lovely to see those kids go for the gold.
I have watched most of the ballets and still visit youtube to be inspired. I really do understand the trust reasons for keeping all under control, still nyc can not live on mr. b
's ballets for long. It needs a choreographer that is so sensational that makes balletomes visit again and again. ABT has same repertoire but is about bravura. we also need the shock of the new?
Barbara Horgan has nothing better to do all day than to monitor youtube for Balanchine works so she can have them taken down. I can just hear here on the phone to the Trust's attorneys now (with her fake accent, of course) "There are still 48 seconds of Jewels posted that someone might be taking some pleasure from - get them taken down!! immeeeeedjiately!!!"
if Balanchine thought his ballets would get better by not allowing people to watch them on youtube after he was dead he wasn't much of a person. I only recently have moved to big city where they have a ballet before that there was no access at all. Even now the local ballet does maybe one a year. The B 'trust" needs a clue.
Please understand that there are many performance rights other than just Balanchine's. Many of the dancers would not give permission, just like actors, musicians, and writers, that do not want their work given away for free.
If you made an effort to read about Balanchine (there are so many biographies and articles), then you would know that he was generous to a fault with letting everyone have access to his ballets. The Balanchine Trust was formed 4 years after his death to preserve his works and they have their own rules. Balanchine gave away his ballets to so many dancers and was not as concerned with performance rights as the keepers of his legacy. Do some research before you malign a legend!
Hold on guys. As a senior ballet-master for the Balanchine Trust, and former principal dancer and choreographer for the NYC Ballet (1966-1974, Guest Artist until 1980) I can vouch that the Trust is doing all it can to, protect and serve Mr. B's legacy. That's why his ballet's are still being danced more internationally than any other choreographer, and still recognizable as Balanchine's work. Please give us a break. John Clifford
i agree with kdub10009, i fully support the Trust but for real, I live in in the south and it's REALLY hard for me to find good recordings (much less acutal performances of) Balanchine.
yes, the Balanchine Trust has GOT to find a way to allow all of us ballet fans out there to see his wonderful work. Lucky for me, I live in New York City and can catch NYCB whenever i want, but what about everyone else??
Yeah it's unfortunate that the Trust was created to preserve and protect Balanchine's work- but has now turned into some type of Balletic Gestapo. POB looks fabulous in this!
it's a shame, the trust will take this video down soon just like they did with serenade's clip and Tchakovsky Pas... too bad I cannot watch my Balanchine videos anymore since my vcr is not working...
The Balanchine Trust are a bunch of ELISTIST F**KTards. IMO, the Balanchine Trust is afraid people will see how Balanchine's choreography has been violated and destroyed by Peter Martins and NYCB. They don't even care that the Dance in America DVD's were transfered like hell - with out of sync Audio/Video. If they really gave a rats ass about Balanchine's works they would release all those wonderful video's on archive at NYPL.
going to see this on thursday, so excited !!!!

@kdub10009 I agree. I don't know why on earth the Balanchine Trust can't sign up to you tube themselves.

The Trust is NOT to "preserve and protect" Balanchine's work, they appear to do so, those people who runs it are full of sh*t.
