The Warsaw Pact had no choice. The country was infiltrated by fascists from the West, they were causing riots, disturbances, the government would not deal with them harshly and instead, like 1989, attempted to appease the criminals. Unlike 1989, the Warsaw Pact came in to help preserve socialism and peace. It should have been the CzechoSlovak military to be in the streets to avoid the scenario. Dubcek et al were traitors.

Reasons for the split are numerous but I think the core of the problem was that both parties felt they would be better off on their own. In the hindsight I personally feel that was a mistake but that's just my opinion. I visited both countries recently and as far as I can tell both are tightly integrated into EU. And yes czech republic re-used the czechoslovak flag.

Victor of these elections in Slovakia (HZDS with leader V. Mečiar) was unacceptabe for Czechs (and in later elections for Slovaks too). Parties that had declared common state retaining were forfeited in elections in Slovakia. There was no other peaceful way than to split.

I understand the invasion from the imperial view of Moscow. I do not understand ordinary Russians defending it. It was done to keep everybody else in line, as Czechoslovak departure from socialist block would be bad for discipline. What did it gain you personally? You traded a friendly and grateful country (now two countries in fact) - for a discipline measure that was temporary as in the end it was Moscow who ultimately called the quits on the socialism.

It would have become a threat to the whole Eastern bloc, had Czechoslovakia become independent in 1968 (and had linked its fate to that of NATO).

We had a great chance to pay back this by not supporting Kosovo in his independence, we didnt do it and we have failed.
Unfortunately the west will now realize why some EU and non EU countries did not want Kosovo to be independent (like Spain, Romania, Russia). Because of the fact that Kosovo became independent,now Ossetia and Abhazia want independence, and the Russians took this to their advantage probably saying "Well, we did not want Kosovo to be independent, but you did, now let these 2 be independent as well..". Just hope this does not happen in Transnistria, because for that we would be really pissed!

Myslím že tehdejší postoj byl to nejrozumější co se dalo nejlépe udělat. Například po vymlácení výlohy aeroflotu v roce 1969 nebylo podle odtajněných dokumentů daleko od vyhlášení "nového protektorátu" a teprve potom by naše sitace byla obrovský průšvih. A dělat si iluze o podpoře od západního bloku si také nelze... The Warsaw Pact had no choice. The country was infiltrated by fascists from the West, they were causing riots, disturbances, the government would not deal with them harshly and instead, like 1989, attempted to appease the criminals. Unlike 1989, the Warsaw Pact came in to help preserve socialism and peace. It should have been the CzechoSlovak military to be in the streets to avoid the scenario. Dubcek et al were traitors.

Reasons for the split are numerous but I think the core of the problem was that both parties felt they would be better off on their own. In the hindsight I personally feel that was a mistake but that's just my opinion. I visited both countries recently and as far as I can tell both are tightly integrated into EU. And yes czech republic re-used the czechoslovak flag.

The constitution o Czechoslovakia current in 1992 wasn't fit for a democratic country Parliament was obstructed and while important economic and political reforms were needed the question that had taken the most part of Parliament time was: The name of the state may be Czechoslovakia or Czecho-Slovakia?

@MetalHeart8787 In parliament elections 1992 was clear those parties in Slovakia were successful that declared autonomy or separation of Slovakia. Victor of these elections in Slovakia (HZDS with leader V. Mečiar) was unacceptabe for Czechs (and in later elections for Slovaks too). Parties that had declared common state retaining were forfeited in elections in Slovakia. There was no other peaceful way than to split.

I understand the invasion from the imperial view of Moscow. I do not understand ordinary Russians defending it. It was done to keep everybody else in line, as Czechoslovak departure from socialist block would be bad for discipline. What did it gain you personally? You traded a friendly and grateful country (now two countries in fact) - for a discipline measure that was temporary as in the end it was Moscow who ultimately called the quits on the socialism.

@jlabath Was it discipline that worried Moscow? Czechoslovakia was in the heart of the defensive line of the Warsaw Pact and it could not leave it during the Cold War. It would have become a threat to the whole Eastern bloc, had Czechoslovakia become independent in 1968 (and had linked its fate to that of NATO).

Zmetku, slovenske jednotky se podilely na vypalovani Plostiny v dubnu 1945 a dalsich valasskych samot jako Varakovych pasek. Vzdyt je to zdokumentovane od 60tych let, vcetne vydanych knih a filmovych dokumentu ktere nemohli utajit ani komuniste. Je pravda, že panslavismus je pěkná volovina, to snad už všem došlo v roce 1968. Kulturně patříme do střední Evropy, tj. nejen Polsko a Slovensko, ale i Německo, Rakousko a Rakousko. Ale zase by bylo špatné východními či jižními Slovany pohrdat. Nemám moc rád Ukrajince, bojovali za Hitlera atd. Ale třeba Srbové nám byli partnery ve dvou světových válkách. Slováci - dobře, že se odpojili, v roce 1939 nás zradili, ale proč bychom dnes nemohli být přáteli, že...

Unfortunately the west will now realize why some EU and non EU countries did not want Kosovo to be independent (like Spain, Romania, Russia). Because of the fact that Kosovo became independent,now Ossetia and Abhazia want independence, and the Russians took this to their advantage probably saying "Well, we did not want Kosovo to be independent, but you did, now let these 2 be independent as well..". Just hope this does not happen in Transnistria, because for that we would be really pissed!

Skúste si predstaviť že by vás tak prišli oslobodiť vaši americkí priatelia, zachranovať u vás hodnoty demokracie a voľného trhu... Praha rozbombardovana napadrť, po Hrade s Katedrálou diera, "náhodou" zasiahnuté priemyselné podniky konkurujúce západnej výrobe, zničená infraštuktúra, masa obetí na životoch (nie tie 2 stovky v 68-mom)...

možná by se toho tolik nezměnilo, možná jo, já nevim, ale každopádně se nám sem nikdo neměl co srát s armádou a okupovat naše území. Komanči už tu tou dobou stejně vládli, a to dost dlouho. A češi se měli taky doprdele bránit, asi by to proti takové přesile projeli, ale ku**a je taky potřeba nebýt takoví přizdisráči a ukázat těm zmrdům, že si s náma nebudou vytírat prdel!!!

Myslím že tehdejší postoj byl to nejrozumější co se dalo nejlépe udělat. Například po vymlácení výlohy aeroflotu v roce 1969 nebylo podle odtajněných dokumentů daleko od vyhlášení "nového protektorátu" a teprve potom by naše sitace byla obrovský průšvih. A dělat si iluze o podpoře od západního bloku si také nelze... A myslím že to co vše vidíš v ulicích v záběrech z té doby... že to není až takové přizdisráčství, ono házej kameny na lidi s odjištenými zbraněmi...

Musel ste do té podle vás fungující a skvělé továrny pracovat ke stroji a plnit plán.Znám mnoho lidí co tak pracovali a po revoluci, když je teď špatně, se mají mnéhem líp. Vy bohužel patříte k těm volům, co se mají furt blbě, tak nadávají.Dříve na to byli všichni blbě, tak to bylo lidem jedno, ale teď se má někdo dobře a to nemůžete strávit.

hlavne kdyby sem ty curaci nelezli tak sme bohatej stat, prototze tu bylo spoustu uranu kerej ty zmrdi vytezili a odvezli si k sobe do ruska. takze ze tu znicili velky prd???!!!
hovno debile okradli nas o to nejdrazsi co tu bylo!!! nebyl by zadnej problem z duchodama atd.!!!

"...věříme, že Československo zůstane demokratické a socialistické..." - co dodat, snad jen to, že v roce 1968 nešlo o žádnou demoktratickou revoluci, ale o "socialismus s lidskou tváří" pokud takový vůbec existuje, něco jako Gorbačovova perstrojka o 20 let dříve. Mám pocit, že si to drtivá většina přítomných neuvědomuje. I kdyby nás Rusové neokupovali, nic moc by se nezměnilo, byli bychom něco jako Jugoslávie - možná by komunisti dovolili drobné podnikání.

Nemali zasahovat, do vnutrozemia, ale mali zase zavriet hranice, inac by vsetci pracovali v zahranici a poberali socialne davky v socialistickej vlasti.
