AHHH so cool worked on that digger shovel few years ago on night shift from Ireland back home now miss OZ to bits happy days. Are the mines still busy out there?? And cheers for putting the video up
Only because you asked..........from an interest point of view; good. From a technical point of view; well, it was your first video. Have just done the same guided trip myself but because of the bobbing heads, s##t awful parrot commentary on the bus ( much of which was inaccurate ) and sun in the wrong place I didn't bother to video much of it.
haha nice video, i also work at whaleback, i am reflector crew, wanna get some excperience on here then get my HR and drive the dump trucks! so sad about what happen last night with the LV and the Haul truck in Yandi so got sent home early ....
Go see any labour hire mob ie. skilled, Workpac etc as they have contracts. FIFO so don't know how you'd go living away from your kids for 2 weeks at a time!
Diggers just a generic term, cause thats what they do, they dig :P Doesn't matter where I've been, Qld or WA, they all call em diggers. That Liebherr in the vid is a Hydraulic Face Shovel, then you have the ones that dig back towards to the machine, I think the proper name for them are Hydraulic Backhoes, or something like that. The term loaders is mainly kept for Wheel Loaders, haven't heard anyone describe an excavator as such before.
I worked in open cut and U/G from 1968 to 1980, and a digger was a machine on a building site, so I guess the terminology's changed over the years! Only get to be on a minesite for a few hours at a time these days, the loaders and shovels (sorry, diggers!) and dump trucks are a lot bigger now.
Cat 992 and Wabco 75 tonner were the biggest I ever operated.
Biggest loader I've heard of is a Letourneau L-2350 Wheel Loader. Type that in in Google Image search, and you'll see some pics of the worlds largest wheel loader.
Shifts vary between site's. Site I'm at at the moment is 2 weeks on, 1 week off. As for swapping around the machinery, you pretty much start out on a truck, and depending how badly they need new digger drivers, you can spend up to a year on a truck before they consider you for training on any other equipment. In saying that though, when you get up to driving a digger, you can pretty much kiss driving a truck goodbye.
Hey mate awesome video, keep em coming. This is such a fascinating industry which i wish to get my hands on. I have an Uncle that works underground at North Goonyella. Im trying to get a Dumptruck Traineeship but is proving difficult. Is there anything you tell me that i could do to help my chances.
Well, the main thing that companies look for is a Heavy Rigid licence as a minimum. In Queensland, they want you to have generic inductions and coal board medicals, and in WA they want you to have a MARCSTA and a Mine Workers Health Sruveillance. Just look these up on the net under australian search, and you should hopefully find some info.
I was searching for Quebec Cartier Mining videos (iron ore too), but I can't find any. Though there's a lot of interesting videos when I type ''iron ore'', like yours ;)
Good vid, brought back some great times, worked here in the mid 70s in the auto electrics then to the power station,my old man was on the dozzers then to the explosives.
We live in Moranbah QLD we have these biggies over here too.. we also have drag lines.. now they are big buggars... my 5 year old loves your video.. Helen
I used to work at US Borax open pit mine in Boron, California, USA. Your video brings back memories. We used big Unit Pig Lectra Hogs, we called them (Unit Rig, Lectra Haul) haul trucks, Latrino (LeTourneau) front end loaders, and 4160v P&H shovels.
Don't worry, this was only a bit of an experiment for me, this video. I do work at one of the other mines in the area, equipment is not quite as big. Big enough though.
So I will be doing a few more videos of where I work, with the diggers, dozers, loaders, trucks, and if I'm lucky, a few of the trains that come here.
I'll put it to ya this way. I drive one of those dump trucks (not as big as in the video, but still huge). The Trucks are fully airconditioned, power steering, AUTOMATIC! :)
The main things you need to operate one of these trucks is a Heavy Rigid licence (Company Policy), and a really good attention span, cause this stuff gets repetitive and BORING... but the pay does make up for it, lol!!
nice work bloke

Good vid mate. I see that big 3 axle Wabco(?) is still there. Got a photo of my first KW standing right next to it, about 20 years ago.
How come you call them diggers, I thought they call them loaders and shovels? Or is that a QLD thing?

Yeah, had a look at it. Bigger than a Cat 994 and they're big enough.
I'm sure I saw a Letourneau diesel-electric loader on the wharf at Dampier about 1981, had a V16 GM and was about the same size as a Cat 992B.
And while you're up there, how about getting some footage of those unreal ore trains?
gm16v149 3 years ago
Yep, I'm working on it, trying to get this camera fixed is a bigger pain in the arse than I first thought, but I'm getting there :D
