  • Fantastic!

  • Maybe the most beautiful song ever. Here sung by one of the most beautiful voices ever ... and the Right voice/singer for the song.

  • It's songs like this that make me want to learn Irish.... Such a beautiful language.

  • Although i don't understand a word, it sounds wonderful to me!!! Thank you for sharing it . . . :-)

  • Regarding her actions toward the catholic Church heirarchy - She was the first to do anything on behalf of those, including herself, who were abused by that structure. It took an enormous amount of courage and she knew at the time that it would create a lot of anger toward her, but she was brave enough to do something. It may be that her action was not the best use of her energy, but I admire her guts, and applaud her stamina.

  • What ?? No thats not a tear, ive something in my eye !

  • wow. never knew that much about her.

  • A truly beautiful rendition of a heart-breaking song!

  • Probably the most beautiful rendition of probably the most beautiful song ever.

  • Always liked Sinead. haunting music. it was just the "hair" thing....and I know ,it makes me sound sexist ..but I love beutifull hair on women..sorry ..am old school. still a amazing artist.

  • Such a beautiful language! :) <3

  • An amazingly beautiful and souldful woman.

    What else can one say?

  • @9999norton UNA DONNA INCREDIBILMENTE BELLA E APPASSIONATA ANCHE X ME

  • A perfect Voice of Ireland

  • Bellissima

  • I have goosebumps just listening to this. I had no idea Sinead sang this, all I heard was Kate Bush and I must say they're both good but Sinead really gives it a haunting feeling.

  • Yep Sinead seemed a bit mad, but was actually very sane - and took on the power structure of the church. Meanwhile she made/makes beautiful music.

  • Really, really, beautiful song. You done the women of Ireland proud on that Sinead.

  • Sinead is the perfect person to sing this song.

  • the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when she sings "she moves through the fair" what a voice!!!

  • A beautiful face, soul and voice. We can be rpoud to have to daughter of Erin for our own.

  • I wish she would do an entire album in Gaelic

  • @Eriica33 I second that!

  • SO perfectly done! Haunting and touching with the lightest movement almost like a balmy breath, lingering fragrance. Thank you for posting this for all of us to hear and cherish!

  • Love her. She's a high riding bitch!!(that's a very high compliment where I'm from)

  • stunning and moving song - not better than Paddy Maloney just different. Heard this years ago and it still works

  • BEAUTIFUL§For those looking 4 a translation into English- - AMackem-- posted 1 in these comments 2 years ago

  • Better a battered career rather than a battered spirit. Not to speak is like (her song for Dolly Parton) a dagger through the heart. She walked tall and carried a big stick. She did not give up. I admire her for that. I loved her voice from the beginning and I will until the end...although, there is no end as the end is only the beginning.

Listening to her, I now know why the caged bird sang...and why she chose to be bald.

  • @alemelech Slainte go saol agat, bean ar do mhian agat. Leanbh gach blian agat, is solas na bhflaitheas tareis antsail seo agat.

  • even though eimer quinn did a wonderful rendition, sinead o connor should have been chosen as the proper representative to sing this song on behave of ireland to queen elizabeth in dublin last night

  • Is breá Mná na hÉireann, mo mháthair, mo dheirfiúracha agus mo bhean álainn mé leat xxx. PS Who are the 20 arseholes that dislike this song ??

  • Wish I knew what the words meant in English

  • although i dont know whar she sings but her voice is so beautiful and amazing. God bless her

  • unbelievable.....beautiful..... I've always loved her voice....

  • F the curch eoin o'gorman

  • @elclairmagnifico

My apologies, and you are not being pedantic.

After I posted my message I later read more . Should have read more before posting!

  • only Karen matheson is her equal...see "Crucan bpaiste" and "ian glinn cuich" (Sp?)

  • I am going to record a version of this using Audacity, I think it's the perfect song because it's just vocals - so simple and conveys a nice message in gaelic... And no I am not posting this to promote the program :P

  • @shaeso sounds like u are but anyways there IS an organ playing softly behind her vocals

  • amhran duitse a shinead

  • If this doesn't speak to your heart, I just don't know if it's beating.

  • sinead you done it again nobody can sing that song like you

  • A French singer made a cover of it : her name is Nolwenn Leroy (you can see her MV on youtube). I'd like some feedback about it plz ^^

  • sung in old celtic

  • @allison89929 It's sung in Gaeilge. Celtic is the race of which Irish people are a small subset. Gaeilge is the language, and this isn't an old form, it's the one still spoken today. Sorry if this sounds pedantic but hate the Irish language being mis-labelled!

  • k. misd

  • I love all Sinead song, song in our ancestral language.

    jorge

  • So beautiful...so heartfelt.

    BONNE SAINT PATRICK .

  • Thank you Col2109, you have it right. i grew up in a large family and, like many other men of the times, my father had to go abroad to keep his family. The mothers,in general, were left to bring up their families with dignity and pride. We children took all their sorrows and heartaches for granted - and they gave without complaint. Thank heavens times have changed for the better. God bless the women of Ireland, past and present.

  • Everyone who loves this, go rent Stanley Kubrick's 'Barry Lyndon', and enjoy.

  • Makes me happy to be part Irish from both sides of my family... <3

  • Do not weep for not being Irish. The women of Ireland have long shown us the way forward. Have long carried the suffering and the men, the heroes, have long been in awe of their female comrades. There is romance, true, but there is a spirit deep down, like a rod of steel that runs through every Irish woman I have ever met. If only I had their steel I would be a better man than am, hero an all that I are.

  • Chan Kate Bush an t-amhrán seo roimh ach is aoibhinn liom na dhá leaganacha! Beirt mná iontach is bródúil! :)

  • i understand she stood up for her beliefs..but she was shut out..after that , and her voice came from god. a blessing , i wish we heard from her more, people just werent ready for what she did, but her voice...like an angel!!!!

  • @southernkell i love her.

  • A magic song of the Celtic world.

Listen the interpretation of Nolween Leroy, a breiz girl. I will be curious of your comment. From Eire, Scotland, Wales, England, Brittany (Breiz) and more ; we are all the daughter and son of the Tuatha Dé Danaan ! Fraternity !

  • @melkki74 I've heard the Nolwenn Leroy interpretation and loved it! I was very impressed with her handling of Irish, there were one or two words where she had difficulty but aside from that it was BEAUTIFUL!!

  • stunning... LOVE it...

thank you so much for sharing!

  • Perfection. Please, someone TRANSLATE!!!

  • engelhafte stimme

  • I weep knowing the fact that i'm not Irish

  • Simply beautiful.

  • A woman of Ireland that knows of what she sings..............

  • Whoooo-hooo, a voice that causes my soul to tremble in joy....

  • LOVE THOSE IRISH WOMEN

  • Dedicated to my mom, Elizabeth Gilroy Johnston and her mom, my nana, Elizabeth Hickey Gilroy--both born in New York, but of 100% Irish descent, and it's amazing how many Irish women I've known, particularly the older ones, remind me of them. Thank you and bless you always.

  • May I Have her guts!

An American Soldier. Son of Ireland

  • May I Have her guts!

  • Great admiration for thei woman. Any Irish person who would ridicule her for he convictions would be lacking a Proud Irish Heart!

  • Sinead virtually destroyed her career by speaking out against abuse within Catholic Church. At the time. she was ridiculed, reviled and dismissed as some kind of freak. She was proved right in the end. An incredibly brave woman, who sacrificed so much to tell the truth.

  • @montpelier42d I think it was misinterpreted as an attack on the faith itself and Catholics. In hindsight I understand her feelings, but at the time, I was not thrilled with the method in which she went about it.

  • @montpelier42d I did not know this about her. I'd wondered what happened to her after awhile. Well, it makes me respect her all that much more. Not many people are brave enough to speak out about secrets hiding behind the church, especially if an incredible career is at stake. She's remarkable, plain and simple...in a complicated sort of way.; and I still love her music.

  • @jtaforJesus

Hardly… I have no idea how you can tie her self-centric demonstration (e.g., "I'm such a rebel") to any indication of a warning against pedophilia in the ranks of the Church. Likewise, I saw no ripping up of photos of famous soccer coaches, ballet instructors, girl scout leaders, etc. – other places where predators of this nature like to hide.

  • @jtaforJesus

No, rather it was a simple “thumbing my nose at the establishment” gesture that provoked wide spread sentiment – face it, when Frank Sinatra wants to kick your butt you’ve probably strayed over the line.

  • @TheRustyspring Well, I shouldn't have spoken, cause I don't know the facts. I'm not Catholic, nor have I ever seen her except in videos, non which had any sort of violence (i don't like it.) I take your word, as I didn't realize these things you said she has done. Enjoy the rest of the week!

  • @montpelier42d

Protest - not that I can see. All that I saw was a self indulgent attention grabbing singer of admittedly great talent whose own ambitions led to her to her own downfall. It was more “me me me” grab on the American stage (i.e., Saturday Night Live) than “I see a potential problem”. She was raised in a very comfortable middle class environment yet pretended to be a self made man arising from the poor gutters of Dublin.

  • Just keep it alive. Language is the transmission belt of culture as Trotsky said.

  • Love you Sinead till the day I die.

  • A hauntingly beautiful voice so full of meaning.no weeping willow here. full of strength. avision of St Joan of Arc

  • There will never be United Ireland because Irish population will commit suicide if they took in Northern Ireland.

  • I´m trying to learn the Irish language,but it`s difficult for a german person-I´d like to understand,-but I feel.....

  • This makes me so happy that my fathers side is from Cork and my mothers Welsh <3~

  • @emROARS Siobhan (the singer/harpist on the sharbas youtube channel) is Welsh on her father's side and her mother's family are from Galway.

This is such a beautiful song and one which I hope Siobhan adds to her repertoire.

  • @sharbas really? I never knew that! haha.

  • Sinead O'Connor is one of the most beautiful artists in soul, spirit, and musicality. And more than all that , SHE IS THE HEART OF HUMANITY AND EMPATHY.

  • Everytime I hear this I want to think there is smoething celtic inside me so I can feel I have at least a far little mystical link with the culture from which something so sublime has emerged.

  • @latintantramaster : Enjoy this feeling and be proud, and feel lucky that you have a Celtic Spirit, for I think I wish I was born Celtic just to be endowed, if Mother Nature would allow it, with such a powerful vocal spirit. On the other hand, I am content with the gift of APPRECIATING IT.

  • Maith thú a Shinead. Iontach!!!

  • Ouch. I'm definitely not seeing Robin Hood with Crowe to avoid ruining my experience when listening to this miraculous song by Sinead. I'm already seeing the 2 idiot Hollywood actors dancing around a fireplace when this song is so much, much more.

  • @Tothe2012

Your loss - as it's quite beautifully done.

  • Yesss, this is the song from Robin Hood when Robin and Maryan were dancing around the fire place!

  • So beautiful. This piece is featured in the new epic Robin Hood movie with Russell Crowe, Kate Blanchette, and Max von Sydow.

  • this channel is being edited by the CiA

  • Ouch. I don't speak Irish; but this one always hurts somehow. Her voice is beyond language. Mary Black is the only one who can touch her.

  • we are getting married

  • great violin part!

  • I love this song and am ashamed that I do not understand the words. Thank you Sinead.

  • This Song is so Beautiful ! I love her voice here. But I can not decide which one is Best, her or Kate Bush. God ! they're Both Amazing Singer. Truly Extraordinary Both of them. I Truly enjoyed Sinead voice her and the Harmony with the Flue. She exudes so much emotions here. Wow ! God Bless her. Love, Teri
  • Lovely isn't it , funily enough I always would have thought it was about a man boasting about the ladies in his homeland at least thats what John Spillan said whenI last saw him and he's from Cork. So he must be right.

  • I always come back to this posting whenever I need a reminder of how beautiful life can and should be, through the power and beauty of Sinead's voice and artistry.

  • This song raises every hair and sends shivers down, It speaks volumes about the Irish Spirit, It's music and song writing, such a proud history and heritage. Sinead does this song great justice.

  • @rosalee26 Sinead's voice has been known to have that effect! She's absolutely brilliant with trad Irish music (and her own songs as well of course).

  • What a voice. Say what you will about her music- you can't deny that voice.

  • This is so beatiful...thank you for this!!!

  • absolutely pure !

  • Hauntingly beatiful. Irish is a mouthful to understand, let alone to speak it.

Go on, Sinead, bring out a CD with Irish songs.

I will be one who will buy a copy

    God Bless you.
