man i saw this movie when i was 10 or 11 and it just blew me away.i had seen plenty of war films before but not like this one.looking back now that was a legendary cast, sheen , brando, duvall and a very young larry fishburne.i loved duvall's character thought he did a great job.that's so cool a few years later you had martin's son charlie in platoon which was great to.
Possibly the worst cast movie in history. Apart from Robert Duvall, the choices for the Willard and Kurtz roles were poorly made. I think the movie says more about the self indulgence of the director than anything meaningful about the Vietnam War.
@shivanebangkok2008 And who exactly would you have had him replace? Certainly not Brando, Duvall or Sheen? Ford got saddled with a fairly uninteresting character, sure, but the movie didn't need him.
@shivanebangkok2008 I think it was the role of a lifetime for Sheen. I think he was a perfect choice, and it's what he'll be most remembed for (well, other than being Charlie's dad). Ford doesn't quite possess the dark intensity the role requires, in my opinion.
To be fair it probably wouldn't be since it shows the savageness of the soldiers that were supposed to be supressing the savage and notably compares them. It was inspired by the novelette Heart of Darkness which had the same idea.
It does make sense if you look at it from the natives' point of view. You know, the Americans killing and napalming them. You could consider that the end of the world, their world.
3:20 reminds me SO much of Billy Bob Thorton in Slingblade. When I see Brandon in that moment I can just see him saying. "Some folks call it a slingblade, I call it a Kaiser Blade"
P.S. I'm 35, so yes, I know this movie came out a long time before Slingblade.
P.P.S. This Comment is -not- a dis, so you movie purists should take a deep breath...
Just a little fact - the country was called Vietnim (and i think to this day, it's people call it that) but the americans didn't think Vietnim sounded threatening enough so they changed it's name to Vietnam as it sounds more dangerous as a propaganda attempt
@XxOnTheStars94xX definately one of the best books i have ever read. also this movie is good. the one line i remember from the movie is also the last lines that kurtz says in the novel as well, "the horror, the horror".
@mindasas0karabasas No, that was an M60 7.62mm MG. The M60 was partially designed after the MG42 which was known to be one of the best crew served machine guns of WWII.
@Olivere118 clearly u don't know definition of apocalypse- complete destruction of the world. In this sense the complete distraction of the soldier world around them because their serving in vietnam. U just insulted anyone who served in vietnam because that what it was really like I'm going to leave this with FUCK U
I dont even get the movie. What kinda "Apocalypse" is this? Its a movie about some american soldiers doing the same thing over and over again as all other Vietnam movies.. Go out shoot some NVA, Fuck some whores and play cards. Oh and they also smoke cigarettes and drink coffee. I guess thats what this weird kinda "apocalypse"'s supposed to be. Stupid movie!
@Olivere118 Just curious, what movie did you watch? Could not have been "Apocalypse Now" Because pretty much nothing you described is in the flick. The title of the movie came from a button that Hippies used to sport that read "Nirvana Now" The Story told by Brando of the VK cutting off the arms of the children who were vaccinated was a real life event. Stop being a douchebag and watch the film b4 you comment on it.
I first saw it when I was 14 or 15, and couldn't appreciate it, due to my immaturity. I watched it again many years later and it's since become one of my all time favorites. It's a masterpiece.
i heard so much talk about this movie and myself being a big war movie fan finally decided to watch it. Major disappointment. it wasn't a horrible movie it was ok. its just defenitly not as good as everyone says it is. Also id be reluctant to call it a good WAR movie. i mean the whole indian tribe at the end?! the movie i thought was nothing special. Defenitley inferior to saving private ryan, platoon, black hawk down and other great war classics. Overrated. not on my top 10 war movie list.
I'm gonna spend the weekend in the basement with dad's old vcr, watching a whole bunch of these movies. Apocalypse now, platoon, full metal jacket, red dawn. Then maybe I'll put on some bdus and feel really fucking manly for a while.
One of my favorite movies and my favorite war-movie. I always say Kubrick's my favorite director, but Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece and it's way better than Full Metal Jacket.
Apocalypse Now did have some Hendrix like vibes in it, it's the scene with the black soldier who blasted the Vietcong on the loudspeaker, the guitar was wailing!
I will never forget the day in 1979 or 80, when I walked into the Bellevue theater in Montclair, NJ as a naiive 14 year old boy raised on the righteous, Hollywoodized John Wayne/Audie Murphy idea of war, and a couple hours or so later, walked out disillusioned, disgusted, and a lot more grown - up. Thank you, Mr. Coppola, for that - and for the gangster movies too.
@thepastry I think even Kubrick would've disagreed with you there. He wasn't extremely proud of FMJ - nor were any of his die-hard fans, including me. It's a good film, but it's dry & ultimately unsatisfying, especially in terms of Kubrickian integrity. At the very least, Apocalypse Now gives you more to chew on. ...this mission all so they can kill one of their own guys who not to mention is successfully kicking the enemy's ass but they dont like his style.
Brilliant! Theres also so many scenes that are just so clever like the one when L. Fishborne dies & they make it really trippy & finally as the fighting stops its totally silent except for a tape of his mom talking to her son who just died.

Most of their crew dies on...
Many people don't understand what this movie is. This movie has a face. This movie is your friend. And if it is not, then it is an enemy to be feared. And I remember when I watched this film.... I... I-I cried... like... some... grandmother.
my favorite movie's 1:Apocalypse now 2:the godfather pt. 1 3:rain man 4:silence of the lambs 5:pulp fiction 6:rear window 7:matchstick men 8:dawn of the dead (original) 9:shutter island 10:untouchables 11:the shining 12:good will hunting 13:clock work orange 14:the omega man 15:the hurt locker
This is, at least in my opinion, the greatest shot film in its history. Lawrence of Arabia comes in 2nd followed by Barry Lyndon. Thats what I think at least and you would be hard pressed to argue that this isnt at least a top5 for best shot movies including one of the all time greatest movies ever made. It never ceases to amaze me friends.
@Joltzz1985 You should check out the last 20 minutes of the 1950s movie AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, trippy and beautifully photographed. And Mario Bava was known for his color thrillers, like BLACK SABBATH ; Fellini even hired him to photograph his episode of SPIRITS OF THE DEAD. The river in DELIVERANCE also looks as good as anything in APOCALYPSE NOW. And Coppola was using Bertolucci's cameraman----THE CONFORMIST is maybe Bertolucci's best.
Man, if Joseph Conrad were alive to see this movie, I bet he would approve. This is probably the best (and only I think) and definitive retelling of heart of darkness I have ever seen. It captures the dark essence perfectly.
No Glory for heroes is an award winning short film that looks the psychological affects ww1 had on soldiers and how it would affect many for the rest of their lives!!
I thought this movie was awesome when I first saw it, but now I realize how diabolical and totally insane Oliver Stone is. I also reject almost everything from Hollywood since I came to that realization. Screw you Stone, Sean Penn, DiCaprio etal.
@HREIII I loved this movie when it first came out----nutty/young me even wished I had been a few years older, in order to serve in Vietnam, that's how much fun this movie made the Vietnam war seem....in THE STUNT MAN "director" peter otoole (?) even says how somebody made an "anti-war" movie and military recuitment went up afterwards....on a subconscious level, maybe a lot of the teens who love this movie might actually think the war was fun---like rap videos glorifying crime.
What's the deal with the hate for this movie? This and 7 samurai are my two favorite movies of all time, and do you know why? These movies take the time to get you feeling connected with the characters... They make sure that you begin to care for the characters' wellbeing to the point of worrying about what's going to happen next. This is a real movie, and anyone who dislikes it enough to post about their hate should be ashamed of themselves.
@SPOREthomas (1) This trailer makes the movie seem as though it's a war version of EASY RIDER---with lots of rock music, with Dennis Hopper even from EZ....(2) Another anti-USA movie; it's still illegal in liberal Hollywood to make an anti-communist movie....(3) The racism and movie brutality of chopping the head off a water buffalo---when most Vietnamese are Buddhists...(4) I saw this in the old Times Square----a mostly African American crowd booed at the end.
@Taobaak0 Hey...kid....I'm over twice your age, I remember the real war on tv, I know Vietnam vets, I saw this movie 6 times when it was first released, in NYC and Philadelphia....and "your either a troll or just very stupid" is a cliched, generic, response that too many people use on the internet in lieu of healthy debate......(my cat, "monk," is almost as old as you.)
Age 10 = Disney Land :)
Age 20-25 = war :D
Age 80 = Die Proud :>

Many people don't understand what this movie is. This movie has a face. This movie is your friend. And if it is not, then it is an enemy to be feared. And I remember when I watched this film.... I... I-I cried... like... some... grandmother.

America first, always and forever.
HREIII 5 months ago 2

SPOREthomas 5 months ago
