Man, these bikes were gorgeous. I had an '83 lazerlite back in the day. Anyone know why these new modern bikes have the seats lowered (ugly as hell) and the nice chromed bikes are no more?? what the fuck happened? ..... I guess it was just a different era. lol!!
Awesome! I am still looking for parts of my face after he blew them off with this performance. I heard he will be in Calgary for the RAD event in late August. Can't Wait! - and thanks for posting bro.
Nice video. Eddie Fiola was great for his time! Good ramp rider too. If you want to learn the basics of good bike control and balance, watch Eddie. His runs have a step by step style to him as he gears up for the more slick advanced tricks towards the end of his runs. That's how I learned some of my tricks when I first practiced from VHS tapes. I also watched Dennis McCoy for different style influences until I found my own. Any way Eddie Fiola is a great rider!
My crew used to Trick all day and night. We used to hit the Schwinn shop in Valley Stream that kept a lot of the accessories you saw in BMX Plus back then. All our bikes were custom and maxed out. Hutch, Haro, GT, Skyway, Dyno, Mongoose and Redline.
@datboysha40 that was a sweet bike but damn was it heavy. i had a Neon yellow & black webbing Dyno Compe II with black GT mags. i loved that bike but it was heavy too.
@jb68025 Yes those bikes were pretty, but they were also tanks. That is when companies built bikes to satisfy the buyers market and it was crazy. Looks over performance...LOL. Now the new bikes aren't as pretty, but they are designed by the riders now. Lighter, stronger, stiffer.
Back in 1988 that was considered a novice run. He didn't do any of the newer tricks. He was a pioneer when the sport first began but never was considered one of the best riders once it started to take off in the mid 80s.
@F1SHaDoW1 you fuckin re read what you said it can be summed up that at this point he was a has been that didnt have the repitoire of trix 2 compete with the new MIDSCHOOLERs of the time GO FUCK YOUR SELF YOU PROBALLY STILL OWN A HUTCH HAHAHHAHAH!!!!!
@iLLMiLLz978 When was the last pro contest he won? He didn't win anything past 1986 where he had to face ANY of the Haro riders. As I said (which is a fact) he was a pioneer that helped kickstart the sport... but when it started to get popular he couldn't compete. Dipshit.
Most the modern tricks you can link back to Eddie, RL Osbourne, and hoffman, and the sport had to finally move even further forward. You can't diss Eddie because he's like the "Godfather" of the flat ground and ramp king, but people have a competitive spirit and will always raise the bar on sports to make them more exciting. Alot of the new tricks are extensions, or newer versions of the old ones anyway. If Eddie just happened to be born in 1990, he would still be the best around here, HEHE...
You see the difference between Eddie and Dennis. Dennis's run was more aggressive and bold whereas Eddie's was real smooth and professional (not to many touches). Dennis represented the future while Eddie(as a pioneer ) represented the past at that point.
Eddie Fiola was "The Man" that made BMX what it is today, There is something that these great riders of today cannot learn, and that is "Style" most of Today's Tricks are so complex they go over the head, so I think respect is needed here, we are talking about the Video/Eddie Fiola....why does it go into a direction where we start dissing?? anyway I could watch Video's like this all day.
Eddie did show tricks in his run, tricks with little risk of losing your balance. Dennis had a good run, Kevin Jones' run had difficulty and didn't touch.
My buddy Jay and I competed at this comp. We slipped in through a back door and practiced with Eddie and hung out with him before the contest. At the time one of my coolest tricks was a "speeding boomerang", I remember it blew him away how fast I was going. One of the coolest freestlylin' memories ever. P.S. he was a really nice guy.
It kills me to hear opinions like this. Of course the newer riders are better, just like football players todays are stronger, faster, ect. Eddie was one of the first true superstars of this sport, and people should not forget it. I was lucky enough to ride with Kevin Jones one summer in PA, and he was amazing, but lets give credit where credit is due.
Actually, I was taking the piss out of you mate. "how about doing some real tricks", who the hell are you to say that about Eddie Fiola? The guys of that era Pioneered the sport. Riders today are drawing on decades of knowledge. Back then there was no-one to show you tricks, you had to make them up. Instead of being sarcastic, just say thank you and be on your way !!
funny how he couldnt adapt to the newer style rolling tricks. he just kept doing handstands and quickspins. watch mccoy and moliternos runs in the same event. totally different stuff.
Sick! That guy is the best. Totally inspired me to buy my Pro Preformer is GT Blue on my 12th birthday. It was a tank but learned to tear it up on it and could bunny hop about three feet straight up with it. Can't believe that I went from being cool back then to being a tractor mechanic now. 20 some years will sure change ya.
Oh I hear ya! I was one of the top riders in my province [not trying to brag; just being honest :)], and today, some 20 years later, I'm just another chooch working for the government.
Oh hell yeah he's alive, he's a hollywood stuntman and still tears it up on a BMX every once and awhile. He has a MySpace, just search for Eddie Fiola. :)
MR. Entertainment! That´s something that I miss in todays competition. Eddie always knew how to rock the crowd! And his fast style was so hot and smooth. Thanx Eddie, for so many great years of your riding.
I use to see Eddie get some big air at Pipeline skatepark in Upland, California around 1987 at the pool next to the pipe..he would come off the coping of the pool and go way over the chain linked fence..he was better then most of the BMX riders back then and burned his competition
