I work for New York State's Department of Taxation and Finance. I feel your pain.

While I'm not involved in the taxes, as a programmer I'm kind of detached from the actual function of the department... but I still have to follow all the rules.

It stinks because I'll have ways to get things done, but it's "not the approved method" so I can't do it... so I end up having to work twice as hard for a worse result... and a lot of people get away with doing NOTHING!

So true, so true, and so sad. I've learned to just not ask if I can do something. I just do it. Strangely people wonder why I'm so productive ... ha!

Well, all I can say is that I'm very glad I don't work in a bureaucracy.
