Razor Ruddock and David Tua are probably the 2 best heavyweights to never win a world title. Funny how Razor would get knocked down hard and go down in almost cartoonish fashion, and burst out in wild laughter before popping right up. By the time Razor fought Morrison, he wasn't training like he used to and gassed out. If Razor had a shot at Buster Douglas after Douglas beat Tyson, he'd have won the undisputed title just as easily as Holyfield did against the same fat Douglas.
@comedicstuff Of course ruddock would have.Holyfield and foreman both ducked ruddock after the dokes ko.But people forget how tough tyson was for fighting ruddock and ko him and almost kill him in the second fight or certainly take the fight out of ruddock and basically retired him.
@fadethetrade - True. You never heard Riddick Bowe, Ray Mercer or a number of other top heavyweights at the time mention Ruddock's name. There's no way Tommy Morrison would've fought the prime version of Ruddock (unless it was for a heavyweight title).
@comedicstuff true. ruddock was the most feared hw in the world after tyson and with tyson people were prepared to fight him for the money. ruddock was fast of hand and foot , a powerpuncher and great stamina usually. his problem was his defence and balance. his chin could be granite in his prime. he also wanst always focused and surrounded by bums like murad. still he fought in a great era of tyson/foreman/holmees/bowe/holy/merce3r/morrsion/moorer as well as the 80s hws
@fadethetrade - After the 2nd Tyson fight, Ruddock had finally made a piece of money that made him feel financially secure. That helped soften Ruddock up. We never got to see the real Razor Ruddock again. Plus, the Tyson fights did take something out of Ruddock; they had to...Ruddock absorbed Tyson's best for 19 rounds.
@fadethetrade - The Tyson-Ruddock fights proved that Tyson wasn't "overrated" or "done" after the loss to Douglas. Losing almost 4 years to the court case and prison is what really hurt Tyson. Sure, he wasn't the same after the money came in and he fired Kevin Rooney (Tyson's combination punching, head movement, partying & drama outside the ring was evident), but Tyson still had a lot left as a fighter and was still feared and unbeatable to most of the top heavyweights.
Tyson doesn't get enough credit for beating Ruddock - and for being willing to give him a rematch after the controversial stoppage of the 1st fight. People like to say that Tyson didn't fight anyone and that they all were scared, not good, washed up, etc. But Ruddock was a stud, in his prime, feared & avoided by most, and far from scared.
@comedicstuff Yeh and Atlas says Tyson wants to quit when people stand up to him and that he lacks character but in that fight he has no head movement and he's being punched with hard shots. It's easy to take shots at people from a distance.
@capablemachine no its not the ones that ko you come from a distance
watch some gerald mcclellan and manuel marquez
theres more raw power on the end of the punch but short punchs that catch you ussually knock you out more just because you dont see them and they effect you more mentally
I thought Razor Ruddock was at his best in the mid 1980's when he used to dance like Ali and outbox opponents like Mike Weaver (1986). When he realized he was a devastating puncher he became flat footed in front of his opponents looking for the big "smash" knockout and that is when he lost his boxing ability. If he danced like he used to he would have beaten Mike Tyson in his prime and also would have done much better against Lennox Lewis (who is a great boxer himself).
Just like Mike Tyson was a great fighter under the guide of trainer Kevin Rooney where Tyson threw 5-10 punch combinations at a time which overwhelmed his opponents.
After being champ for awhile he dropped Rooney and believed his own press releases about his own invincibility and became a 1-2 punch fighter and lost his invincible aura. I guess many great fighters lose their discipline after a lot of experience in the ring and look for short cuts.
@justme154 I don't agree, when tyson was in the 86-88 period, the dancers wern't the way to beat him.He eats dancers for breakfast. Its the fighters who learn how to jab first and step in on HIS lunges.Thats the style that tyson didnt prove he coulld beat.Bonecrusher smith had the idea, holyfield succeeded.Ruddock outpointed an ancient mike weaver and it was closer then you think but ruddock looked like he could have become a dancer but he realized a self preservasion style wouldn't work for him.
Yes he could 74GD. He had loads of talent. I was surprised that his career didnt reach much higher levels. He definitely had one helluva punch. Peace.

I have great respect for Ruddock but he'd never beat a prime Tyson!
