  • Language is a form of communication. There are no right or wrong as long as we understands each other. You should be proud that we Singaporeans have our own unique language, instead of just following some international language. If Singlish is the international language, I bet you will be saying "I dun wan let my churen and hasburn speak Engrish leh", instead of "I do not agree to any one of us using Singlish. I mean my family."

  • @xxuenii Let me type that out without the errors. "Language is a form of communication. There is no right or wrong as long as we understand each other. You should be proud that we Singaporeans have our own unique language, instead of just following some international language. If Singlish is the international language, I bet you will be saying "I dun want let my churen and hasburn speak Engrish leh", instead of "I do not agree to any one of us using Singlish as a form of communication."

  • Attention please......Eating or drinking or SINGLISH are not allowed in the trains or stations..I WILL NOT CONDONE THIS!

  • Singlish is singaporean.. u listen to how jamaican or Mexican speaks english... they have a certain originality to it... cannot angkat sial this woman...

  • strip off her citizenship then..

    I hope she reads this:

"you're not proud of your own culture, and you don't deserve to be people of our nation. could it be that you are actually a 2nd class citizen, which doesn't makes you proud and appreciated to be one of us? look at 0:32 to 0:34.. you're choking onto your own made up NATURAL accent.. *pui* "

  • i don't CONDONE using singlish at all. i don't CONDONE anybody putting on an accent at all either. whether its singlish or a foreign accent, really i don't condone it.

    meh, your vocab = limited

  • 0:00 - Meh... Not really...

    0:40 - HOLY CRAP IT'S HER

  • Wad an atas mama! condone is a little too strong a word don't you think? Who says ''we are singaporeans = no singlish?!'' Its part of our culture ok!! Srsly the first 42 secs of this video is unnecessary and makes my blood boil!

  • Did she do the circle line as well? Bras Brasah is hilarious.

  • Singlish is every bit a part of our culture so that's just bullshit. I feel like punching her, for the convenience of all passengers.

  • grammar nazi

  • i bet this is her made up accent,,,

  • shes very negative

  • i thought all along the announcer was a woman in her 20s haha

  • talk about good english ? you KEEP using DONT DONT DONT DONT DONT ! Count the number of times she say it =)

  • @gatecrusherz: You do realise that the word don't is also an English word right? Do Not = don't.

  • @gatecrusherz you got pwned, Sherlock wannabe =)

  • I think we should alll be proud of singlish it is part of our culture so why deny it.Do not misunderstand me, you have to use english in formal occasions or when needed but it is perfectly fine to use singlish in informal circumstances. Just like how we alternate when talking to family and business associations. And please note that an accent is subjective.

Whose definition do we follow then? As singaporeans out status quo is obviously singlish! To us, you are carrying an accent. Please reflect!

  • If she could do all 4 languages even more shiock

  • FEMALE MORGAN FREEMAN! LOL

  • bitch needs to get off her high horse

she doesn't condone anyone putting on an accent? bitch please if we didnt have accent's we would sound like robots

Singlish is a way off life for us but its not like we don't know how to speak proper english either

  • @draka2620 As a Singaporean, I have long since learnt how to switch gears. Language should be spoken properly when formal. When among friends, go ahead and do what you want. It reflects poorly on Singaporeans when one is unable to speak English as it is meant to be spoken.

  • You see. When you try to sound linguistically right and classy you start to stammer and not know what to say.

  • i used to have an accent, until ---knee--->

  • By seeing your name, you're not a pure singaporean. So Singlish FTW LA!!!!

  • This woman speaks a lot of sense. Singlish is a travesty!

  • I don't

  • I don't condone anyone who doesn't condone people's freedom of expression.

  • mindblown

  • holy mama. MINDBLOWN

  • whoah shit im mindfucked

  • Singaporean female version of Morgan Freeman, yes?

  • I DON'T

    I DON'T I CONDONE

     I DON'T

  • WONDER HOW MUCH SHE EARNS JUST BY SAYING THE SAME SHIT OVER AND OVER AGAIN

  • prescriptivism at its best. there is no such thing as a standard correct english.

  • We singaporean singlish also like english lol

  • She's old

  • She's old

  • is "condone" the only bombastic word she knows? lol

  • @shirusubemonaku how can you just judge her by this short video! just because she speaks perfect dosen't mean she has to use difficult vocabulary to speak!

  • @shirusubemonaku communication is about getting your message across, not showing off one's wealth of vocabulary. And if you realize, by repeatedly using "condone", she is impliedly drawing a comparison between the use of singlish and putting on of an unnatural accent.

  • She doesn't CONDONE a lot of things. LOLOLOL, I couldn't help it.

  • nice voice she have :D

  • Damn! Her english is awesome. I wish I could talk like her.

  • Love her voice

    Nice

  • wow!her voice..

  • I think her english have some singapore accent and some british accent....

  • make her say NEXT STOP!

  • Count the no. of DON'Ts. LOL

  • Why she kept saying "Condom"?

  • @JamieeSilk Are you kidding?! Seriously! She's saying "condone". "Condom" is pronounced "Kon-dom" or "Kon-dem".

  • @JamieeSilk gawddd, do you even know how to pronounce condom? -.-

  • WoWW this is the voice i hear everyday! @^@

  • actually myself I like singlish better than bullshit proper english...

most of time i pake singlish for my daily conversation lar wallau e...

so kepo neh ah ma... speak watever y want lar.. who cares anyway

i am in Australia speak singlish ppl just dont care as most of chinese ppl around here speak very english haya...rather campur2 lar.. ok...dont understand ask yr mother to translate hahaa

  • finally i can put a face to the voice. SCORE!!!

  • Keep (I don't...)

  • i missed the old announcement!

  • I want you back, the 3 ghost singing in the MRT is horrible!!!!!!!!!

  • "we are singaporeans, why should we have an accent"...singaporeans accents are accents...just as long you speak, you have an accent, even if it's neutral -.-

Singlish is cool btw. At least sg have an identity somewhere! :D

  • Shes saying people should not talk with accents. She is an idiot an accent is not really something you can controll.

  • she is speaking with an accent -_-'''

  • Singlish is what makes Singaporean singaporeans duh.

  • should be comfort instead of convenience... anyways I wonder how much is she paid to do it :O

  • I DON'T!

  • She doesn't condone -faking- an accent. That's what she meant. Like how all the SPG skanks do with their rich ang moh BFs just to look more attas.

  • Wtf all along i thought it was by a robot.

  • @KeithWongSG haha, u made ur mummy proud

  • I think the only person who is speaking with an accent here is her. Come on, Singlish is part of our identity and if you do not condone it go migrate somewhere else with your De Souza, De Silva chao heh (smelly prawn) families.

  • @UnSaintLike She is speaking naturally. Just like a few singaporeans also. Wtf is wrong with you? just cause your english sucks and you speak in singlish doesn't mean other people do. Plus, if you wanna earn big bucks in the future, sticking with singlish won't help. I only use singlish for socialising with *some* people.

  • @DarkGuitarKid First off, I have to admit that my English is not the best. I will not judge my standard of English, however I can get my point across to people from different parts of the world and communicate with them easily. Talking about big bucks, Singlish does not play a part in your earnings. Knowing how to do business and being the best in your trade does. I assure you can find many people who speak singlish and are rich and successful out there.

  • @UnSaintLike Yeah there sure are. I'm sure those people would not go around la leh lor with say, foreigners, if they're in the marketing industry right?

  • @DarkGuitarKid Well that is not exactly true. There are many deals that end with a handshake with Singlish. It is our identity, we do not need to pretend in order to clinch a deal.

  • @UnSaintLike It's no about pretending, it's about speaking properly. Many students learn how to do that in school anyway, for their oral exams. so yeah, use the correct way to speak when needed.

  • @DarkGuitarKid It is a good thing to learn but hey, getting your point across is what you want and not how you do it.

  • She is wrong. She can't say that Singaporeans speak english with an accent, because even British speaks english with an accent. Singlish is not about accent, it's about the phrases and grammar used when we talk.

  • i thought her voice can be seductive especially the announcement at woodlands station, the one "Going to Johore Bahru~? ........ "

  • Nice Soothing voice despite age. Good.

  • I agree ma'am

  • Comment removed

  • Thats enlgish

  • I DON'T (emphasize) CONDONE this...I DON'T (emphasize again) CONDONE that...I JUST DON'T (emphasizing yet once again)...Seriously, I thought she was a fine announcer. But also seriously, what she just said here (quoting babyboyblue87) reeks of stupid 'proper' bullcrap. I can speak in an accent professionally (so says my clients), but I don't feel fake. Infact, it comes out naturally. So there. To each his or her own then. None of us is right. None of us are wrong. But I don't like her attitude..

  • wow.......great lady :D

  • What she said is exactly right !! I love her !! She has a very good voice too .. She sounds so professional !! For any Public announcement, there should be a Proper English with NO Singlish accent !!

  • @GoodG4U2 please, the whole 'proper' thing reeks of elitist government-soaked propaganda.

  • Your attention please, eating or drinking is not allowed in STATIONS and TRAINS. Thank you for keeping the stations and trains clean, for the COMFORT of all passengers. TSK i memorised all the lines!! She mixed up her own.

and she meant PUTTING up an accent, i.e faking one. She is merely speaking articulately and enunciating her words. That's is NOT faking an accent.

  • @boyfabulous she speaks with an accent too, hi.

  • who is she to condone the language that we use???

  • Aren't you speaking English with an accent? =_=

  • Hi Ms Melson, if i didn't speak Singlish, i'd be putting on an accent. Because i am a Singaporean. That's all.

  • Haha cool! The way she says passengers is classy.. As though we are taking first class on the plane and not juz the MRT..-_-

  • she said she doesnt condone people PUTTING on an accent. which is supposed to mean that she doesnt like it if the accent is unnatural.

ANYTHING else, which is natural is fine.

this is the problem you guys. PEOPLE JUST DON'T PAY ATTENTION.

  • her announcement was use from 1987 to

    2007

  • What if you grew up speaking in a foreign accent? I agree that a characterless, dull and boring way of speech is suitable as a metro announcer, but you can't tell others to speak in a way that's unnatural to them.

  • pity her family.

  • for those who think she speaks with an accent, may i know which country's accent are you referring to?

  • @singalore An accent is "a manner of pronunciation of a language". Everyone speaks with an accent. She may not be speaking Singlish, but it's still a Singapore accent. Our English sounds different from Americans, Europeans, etc. It has a distinctive sound, and that's the accent.

  • EVERYONE has an accent ....

BUT - I agree that so-called "Singlish" should not be used on the public announcements ... not because it is wrong, but because the maximum number of people must understand what is said

  • Wow.

  • so this is her voice come out while i m trying to take a bite of Old Chang Kee. it is not good to eat when it get cold, sigh!~~~

Btw, two tumbs up for your english pronounciation!!! :D

too perfect accent that my mom can't even understand what she is saying. Singlish is perfect for those with bad english like my mom.

so, thumbs up to singlish too!!!

  • @mlpyae hahahaha!!!

  • may i noe wad was ur age when u announce tat ting?

  • 1) I totally can't understand who is REALLY putting on and accent. Juanita herself is using an accent, let alone Singaporeans.

    2) Secondly, announcements featuring her voice are really naggy and boring. The Chan Hui Yuh's are far more better than Juanita's.

    3) Thirdly, she's an old lady, through her physical appearance and her voice.

    4) Lastly, those who wants to hear her voice, can go to any BPLRT station platforms.

  • @leonardtan0406

I do not think that Juanita is putting on an accent. I believe that her's simply comes from a generation of Singaporeans who were educated by teachers who stressed on the importance of good grammar and good enunciation, i.e. the babyboomers, and my mother being one.

  • I do not. I don't seems very american firstly.

Secondly , you sound like you have an acccent.

Thirdly , Whats the significance of of telling people about whether you speak singlish or not?

Good stuff. You bring the word "snorbish" to a whole new level.

  • 'snobbish', perhaps?

  • my gosh...i hear her everyday...

  • who's putting on an accent?

  • For the comfort of all passengers. HAHA wow but for me, words come out of me more naturally when I fake an accent. Dunno why. :S

  • imba really.

  • COOL!

  • I can hear her voice every single day...

  • Her voice was perfect for the mrt announcements! it's so natural:) i really miss the old voice...:(
