My recruiter told me I can get out during DEP, which I am in right now. Just search online if you're not sure. The recruiter in the video lies but the kid should do his own research beforehand anyways. Both are at fault.
In any case, the kid should just go into guard or reserve if he wants to go to college and have a small source of part time income on the side.

DEP was only designed to get recruits 'screened' for service... the signing of enlisted contracts and swearing in is where your obligation begins! Recruiting is a nightmare, quotas go down when your assigned to the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately recruiters need 2 bodies a month to stay on recruiting status. Recruiting is a fail/fail for that NCO, if he can't make his quota and can't complete his tour on recruiting status? The dream job is to work re-enlistment, but you got to do the gauntlet.
These are just really shitty recruiters. When I DEP'd into the Marines they told me everything straight foward. They told me I can leave the DEP without any penalty but it hurts them so they asked me how serious I was. Took the ASVAB got my physical and then got my contract. My recruiter even told me that he hates recruiting and rather be in his normal unit. My whole RSS is a family.

You can still screw up in a way that disqualifies you altogether(like drug use or legal trouble). I would tell the same thing to any one in DEP: "If you want to change your mind about joining, now is the time to do so before it's too late."

I am in DEP army and I will tell you right now the recruiter isn't threating the recruit he is telling him what is going to happen if you try to leave. Once you have signed your contract at MEPS there is no going back. If you try to dropout you will be arrested they explain this VERY clearly at MEPS for about a half hour. The kid should have read his contract alot better.

I don't mean to be an Army basher but I have been miserable since I have been in. I've made mistakes a soldier (sometimes being late or smarting off because I was getting treated unfairly) but no Article 15's on my record. I understand that I took an oath but not to be treated like a nobody. Once, my SGT threw my I-pod against a wall and almost broke it, then one time he locked me in a room and blocked the door so I couldn't get out. Family time goes out the window. It's not worth it!

The Army is large scale sustained land combat, and thats the fight we're in, land combat. The Navy is sea warfare. Sailers whose job it is to support land combat ie seals, swcc, ma's, eod, doctrinally insert and extract themselves via the sea, however are assigned to Army units. Air Force in aerial combat, airman with ground combat jobs ie Pj's, TACP, CCT, spec ops weather, and SF are assigned to Army Units. Marines are a support branch, period, and are fighting under Army command.

Studied some first aid and learned to drive so I can join the army..stay in training for aslong as I can, earn rank and try my hands at being ranger.

@davey5040 I am glad that there are some decent recruiters. I had 6 recruiters advise me to lie and even lied on my paperwork for me and gave me and my wife an entire bunch of lies. They changed their tune once my LT.COL Grandfather got involved. Most folks in Basic also had similar stories.
Once you're in DEP, you're in the Inactive Reserves. You did sign a binding contract when you signed up into DEP. To legally leave DEP, you will have to receive permission from the Commanding Officer of USAREC. Legally, if you don't show up on your ship date, you are liable for arrest and either detention or boot camp. However, the military hasn't prosecuted anyone for a long time who's left the DEP. Keep in mind though, if you leave DEP, you'll either be ineligible or need a waiver to enlist.

The Navy recruiters next door were really cool whom I spoke with before trying for the Army. One thing is certain, no branch is hurting for people right now. That's why I have to wait till Feb. 22 2011 to go to fort Benning. And that's one of the shorter ones.

My recruiter told me I can get out during DEP, which I am in right now. Just search online if you're not sure. The recruiter in the video lies but the kid should do his own research beforehand anyways. Both are at fault.
In any case, the kid should just go into guard or reserve if he wants to go to college and have a small source of part time income on the side.

DEP was only designed to get recruits 'screened' for service... the signing of enlisted contracts and swearing in is where your obligation begins! Recruiting is a nightmare, quotas go down when your assigned to the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately recruiters need 2 bodies a month to stay on recruiting status. Recruiting is a fail/fail for that NCO, if he can't make his quota and can't complete his tour on recruiting status? The dream job is to work re-enlistment, but you got to do the gauntlet.

These are just really shitty recruiters. When I DEP'd into the Marines they told me everything straight foward. They told me I can leave the DEP without any penalty but it hurts them so they asked me how serious I was. Took the ASVAB got my physical and then got my contract. My recruiter even told me that he hates recruiting and rather be in his normal unit. My whole RSS is a family.

You can still screw up in a way that disqualifies you altogether(like drug use or legal trouble). I would tell the same thing to any one in DEP: "If you want to change your mind about joining, now is the time to do so before it's too late."

I am in DEP army and I will tell you right now the recruiter isn't threating the recruit he is telling him what is going to happen if you try to leave. Once you have signed your contract at MEPS there is no going back. If you try to dropout you will be arrested they explain this VERY clearly at MEPS for about a half hour. The kid should have read his contract alot better.

I don't mean to be an Army basher but I have been miserable since I have been in. I've made mistakes a soldier (sometimes being late or smarting off because I was getting treated unfairly) but no Article 15's on my record. I understand that I took an oath but not to be treated like a nobody. Once, my SGT threw my I-pod against a wall and almost broke it, then one time he locked me in a room and blocked the door so I couldn't get out. Family time goes out the window. It's not worth it!

The Army is large scale sustained land combat, and thats the fight we're in, land combat. The Navy is sea warfare. Sailers whose job it is to support land combat ie seals, swcc, ma's, eod, doctrinally insert and extract themselves via the sea, however are assigned to Army units. Air Force in aerial combat, airman with ground combat jobs ie Pj's, TACP, CCT, spec ops weather, and SF are assigned to Army Units. Marines are a support branch, period, and are fighting under Army command.

And yes most have been deployed now, and you being one that i'm guessing has never served how can you point out a recruiter who has or hasn't been in combat.

@rcarnes1988 I wasn't passing judgment on this recruiter specifically, I said most haven't and I'm just going by what I've heard from people who serve, also FYI I started working out using the "Insanity" program and finished getting my GED and college credits. Studied some first aid and learned to drive so I can join the army..stay in training for aslong as I can, earn rank and try my hands at being ranger.

@jenn1ifer most of these soldiers have been deployed and so have most of the recruiters. the kids just need to stop being pussies, People obviously don't understand how this works. And if people who are making comments on here never been in the Armed Services and been deployed then they need to keep comments to their self. They obviously dont love their country enough to fight for it and serve it. Air Assault !!!! I dont think that they should be able to get out of it this easy!

They offer everyone a bonus, and if you read the literature you know what your rights are, and can refuse. You have to educate yourself, but as usual the media shows that minorities are being victimized. The risk and horror of war? Yes they comes with the job, the last recruiter I came in contact with said right out his unit was in combat, and explained everything thoroughly. These guys in the profile are scum, but arm yourself with knowledge before you make any great life change.

This video is fucking ignorant. Im a US Army recruiter in Chicago and I have NEVER i say again NEVER!!!! lied or mislead any of my future soldiers. I treat them with the upmost respect and red carpet treatment. I fight hard to get them what they want and almost always succeed!. Supremely dislike!

@davey5040 I am glad that there are some decent recruiters. I had 6 recruiters advise me to lie and even lied on my paperwork for me and gave me and my wife an entire bunch of lies. They changed their tune once my LT.COL Grandfather got involved. Most folks in Basic also had similar stories.

Once you're in DEP, you're in the Inactive Reserves. You did sign a binding contract when you signed up into DEP. To legally leave DEP, you will have to receive permission from the Commanding Officer of USAREC. Legally, if you don't show up on your ship date, you are liable for arrest and either detention or boot camp. However, the military hasn't prosecuted anyone for a long time who's left the DEP. Keep in mind though, if you leave DEP, you'll either be ineligible or need a waiver to enlist.

Oh how i love my recruiter. every day he tells us how we can leave DEP anytime no questions asked. we just have to call em and say we want out. i think i got the 1 cool recruiter.

@SketchyPeenut There are many. The local Army recruiter taking me down to meps tommorow to sign my contract is a really cool one and very up front with me. The Navy recruiters next door were really cool whom I spoke with before trying for the Army. One thing is certain, no branch is hurting for people right now. That's why I have to wait till Feb. 22 2011 to go to fort Benning. And that's one of the shorter ones.
