This is going to be the most screwed up year for the BCS (I know we say this every year). The possibility of having 5 undefeated teams at the end of the year will mean there will be stronger cries for a playoff system. The BCS has not worked & will never will work.
@uofl2004 I disagree completely. There's no need for a playoff... This is just 21st century american thinking. Sports haven't always had playoffs. In fact, when playoffs were first introduced in baseball, a lot of purists hated it. Playoffs are just to boost ratings, and guess what. The BCS system will never change unless people stop watching, which will never happen. If there were a playoff system, regular season wouldn't be fun to watch anymore. It would destroy over 100 years of tradition.
The reason baseball started the AL & NLCS in 69 is the league expanded which made it more difficult to pick the best teams to go to World Series which it self IS a playoff. Sports is a business & ratings are apart of that business the more ratings you get the more money is involved. When you will have 2 (maybe 3) teams undefeated how can anyone say who the best team is the way the system is now.
The BCS will change, the reason why we have the BCS is enough people got tired with the old system & wanted change. When enough people get tired BCS it too will change. Tradition means nothing if the system is broke.
uofl2004: A playoff would no doubt reduce the number of games in the postseason, thus vastly reducing revenue for many schools and the networks that show the games. Schools get millions of dollars just by participating in a bowl game. It's a really big deal. The BCS system is helping schools out by providing funds to upgrade their campuses and provide superior education. Isn't that the most important thing? This goes beyond a bunch of games.
You can still have the bowl system and have a playoff. Incorporate the BCS bowls as the first round of the playoffs that away the tradition will survive. I doubt the money the schools make from the bowls goes into the academic side of the schools, some does but most of it goes back into athletics.
Ok. Maybe i'll spice up the comment window a little more. Geaux Tigers. THE NATIONAL CHAMPS OF 2007. THE LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY! GGGEEEAAAXXX TIGERS!
