I remember when all this happened. Lanza had a lot of problems, and could not handle success. I am glad that they went ahead and made The Student Prince with another actor and Lanza's voice. His voice was unequaled, and it is tragic what happened in his life.
bless sweet little Ann Blythe, she just couldn't quite match Mario Lanza's singing..she just can't quite hold the notes as long as he can and her tonal quality is much different from his..sounds to me like she wasn't listening to him and she was too nervous when she recorded this...any young singers just starting out, hope you're reading this..to match your partner's singing, you have to listen to them very carefully...also, relax your throat as if you're laughing, to ensure best quality sound.
Problem was Lanza couldn't fit into his costumes after spending too much time at the dinner table (and the breakfast table, and the supper table, and the dessert cart, and the... well you get the idea). MGM had to replace him with a suitable actor. Be glad they used Purdom, otherwise "SP" would have been shelved for good.
@Dano16 Actually, the "problem" had nothing to do with his girth. The original director tried to tell him "how to sing" and he walked. Then...after a whole legal mess, they hired Purdom, and ultimately fired the original director! Lanza agreed to let them use his singing but was busy doing something else when they finally got around to shooting the rest of the film.
Shame on producers who'll use a singer's vocals .. but then cast another actor to play the part! Lanza had a dispute with MGM after recording his vocals, so they used handsome Edmund Purdom to act the part, but had him lipsynch to Lanza's recording!
