  • Still kicks the beats of today hard,

  • Where is the version with the 2 girls arguing in the beginning,I believe the video was with the"Art of Noise"on stage and 2 girls were talking in the background on the track it was funny the 2 girls arguing made me laugh they were'nt arguing for very long but the little segment they had with them talking at first then they started arguing was very cute and I can't find that version anywhere.Hopefully someone can help me.

  • wonder if this is where Liquid Television got is influence.

  • still remember the show in Montreal many years ago

  • high school baby

  • What is the sample from at 3:31? Sounds like Paul Hardcastle's "19."

  • This little girl scared me when I first saw this video ....back in the 80s. Haha

  • @IrishAlways8,

Me too! I thought I was the only one who found that little girl scary. I was only 10 then

  • Still have this on vinyl...love this song.

  • This group was so far ahead of its time. They were and still are amazing, even after all these years. Great job on the video, also!

  • If you pause @ 3:57 you can see the Camel cigarettes logo.

    What a trip.

  • WOW synthpop flash back. Their first big hit "Beat Box" is special to me, the fist time I heard it was the same day my wife found out we had our first child on the way. The DJ played it to start his set and he got so tired of hearing people yell to play it again that for the last hour he just looped it and sat in the bar drinking lol. We though about the middle name of Aon but wimped out. (still wish we went with it)

  • Who is the little girl in the video, and where is she now?

  • @maryjeanjellybean

Im pretty sure she is an adult (midget?) she also appears in the Dragnet video sans carazy makeup & you can tell she is no little girl

  • @maryjeanjellybean Her name is Sylwia, she is a daughter of a friend of Zbignew R. , the director of the video. Have no idea where she is now.

  • Wow man, this brings back some memories! I first saw this late at night in the 80's on USA up all night they used to have part of it called Night Flight where they would show music videos and previews. This video/song blew my mind and had never heard anything so damn cool b4. That little girl freaks me out! lol. Thanks DPJTRON for putting this up and I loved what you did with blending/editing. I was looking for this song for years, just forgot name/title etc. Thanks again!

  • Normally I'm not all that hot about remixes or remakes, but you've done a beautiful job with this classic bit of music history. Thank you!

  • A truly brilliant and unique piece of work - love it loads and brings back many memories of late 1984 and 1985! Fab video too - thank you so much for bringing this to us

  • yeah oh no cant believe...................we look Error, try again who is afraid of

  • Close to the Edit.

  • Where was this filmed, it looked like bratislava

  • @sotodnl Pretty sure it was filmed somewhere in London back when it was a real shithole (around 1984)

  • @TheOKTerrificable Damn, never realized it look that bad

  • @TheOKTerrificable

    It was filmed in NYC

  • @DPJTRON Ah ha! The original shithole!

  • This was a brilliant piece of work DPJTRON! I like all the tidbits of info & the meshing of all your visuals. Great timing, you rock! And now after 25+ yrs. I finally know the real name of "punk girl". Excellent video! :-)

  • TO BE IN EUROPE IN THE SUMMERTIME

  • bollocks

  • @MyDadsMusic1 What dio you mean Bollocks? it's quite good

  • @MyDadsMusic1 I seem to be in two minds about it

  • Awesome editing. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. XD

  • 1:45 ...Zomg !!!that lil girl always freaked me out wen i was little

  • i wish i could smsh up stuff like that....

  • Brilliant work with the editing DPJTRON, I guess it helps when you have great material to work with.

  • Really good! I only saw this like twice. I think it was on Friday night videos (NBC). Remember that show?

  • This song is an example of why 80's music was so unique and advanced!

  • I LOVED this song back in the day! For an 80's tune, this song was extremely advanced and nothing today can compare to it's unique sound. The only group from today that I can link to Art Of Noise, is Daft Punk, whose sound I love, and does have a bit of that retro/techno feel to it!

  • HEY!!!

da da da...I LOVE IT...i have the original CD---I now realize how lucky I am

  • REALLY nice video editing of all the videos to go with this extended mix. I especially loved the "behind the scenes" info you provided ala Pop-Up Videos. Classic!

  • Great memories of high school!!!

  • Dude, thank you for that trip!

  • I think someone butchered the original version with a Guy in an phallic elephant hat and Weird Al's cousin Weird Todd.

  • Thanks this was awesome to see again!

  • Some of the outfits look like something artist Leigh Bowery would have come up with - did he have any part in those costumes?

  • Brings back some boss memories that!

    Nice 1 DPJTRON <3

  • Yep... It's great!

  • 16 ppl no nothing... AoN pioneered electronica...

  • @FredrickDouglass1

16 people don't know they've heard music made by AON members in movie scores and other bands.

"The Full monty" "American history X"...."Frankie goes to Hollywood" "The Crying game". "Pet shop boys"

  • This video sucks ass

  • @bkwilsey

You might want to look up the names of the members of AON and see what they were and are responsible for.

Groups to this day borrow and sample from them. In fact several bands got their start with the help of AON members.

  • @jblackrupert

Anne Dudley was basically the composer of Medley

JJ was beats, sampling and Fairlight programer

Gary Langan was beats sampling and audio engineer

Trevor Horn was the decision maker

Paul Morley was marketing and BS artist.

I don't know about any bands getting their startup, but as a group and individually they contributed to other artists and their hits.

  • WONDERFUL WORK!!

  • That was great!!! I so miss the 80's talent.

  • who is that little midget girl? How do u people listen to this crap, i can understand ebm, experiential, idm, synpop, industrial music but, where does this fall under.......o yeah i know crap right next to rap and country...........

  • @woulfe42 It falls right under your mom.

  • @woulfe42 You've got to look at when it was done you moron. Yeah, not necessarily the adhd Hot Topic crap you listen to.

  • I so very appreciate this upload. - Thomas

  • great job on the edit!

  • Thank you so much for uploading this! deahvo

  • Thumbs up if Art of Noise should get back together

  • @PhillyCloud123

They released another album with unreleased tracks and new edits in 2010.

they might be getting back together and recording new songs.

  • @jblackrupert yay!!!!

  • NOW THATS MIUSIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Inspired! - saw them at Shephard's Bush Empire - only had to wait close to 20 years to see the play live - a wonderful video edit tribute - many thanks.

  • Man, soo many memories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank u for putting the REAL Muzak on your channel!!!

  • this is so my shit thanks for the post were can i download Close to the Edit Extended please let me know

  • Really good, i like the edit.

  • Without a doubt, I have got to have my Real Music, played by Musicians, with real Instruments. But, I did dig this guys with their Electronic Sound. This was alright...

  • Great song to pop to..

  • this girl is so awesome with her 3 demolition masters

  • well i think the comments are great! just little nuggets of info...sort of like that old show that was on VH1,,,pop up video

  • fantastic stop complaning

  • Was Sylwia a personal friend of the Director too? That's just weird.

  • 0:44 - well...found MY new phone ring!

  • Awesome. Love AON.

  • The only one I've ever seen was the one with the chainsaw, the piano and the odd group of characters. And that director's propensity for casting very small people...I've often wondered....

  • Young punk girl giving the chops, just priceless in this video.

  • Dam NEAR jumped the HELL OUTTA MY SEAT When I heard THIS!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Another greatly underrated group..great stuff

  • May 1984 - I was 24 years old....I had just bought a 1984 Buick Regal Grand National...and this was one of the first cassettes I bought * (Who's Afraid Of?) The Art of Noise! * I would crank this, along with YELLO, Kraftwerk, & DEVO....Yes...they are saying "Close to the edge"....but who cares..??

It was THE BEAT we were after...!!!

  • @dkraft1 I was 14 years old and was wearing a jacket with zip off sleeves! My mom bought me a Panasonic (I think) portable cassette player. I had to flip the tape over manually. It didn't have auto-reverse. :)

  • the Italian futurist were correct! Great smoking piano :-)

  • This was so close to that movie The Road Warrior. Nuf said.

  • very cool edit of it love it and love the orig aswell, hadnt seen it in years,i do have the vhs vid here somewhere if it still works, didnt know it was flipside of beat box cooool

  • I didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as the original, but I really did! I always loved this longer version, and to see a video that matches is so well is like finding a long-lost artifact. Thank you! (Be happy or die.)

  • Great version....

  • Nice work!

  • BRILLIANT !

  • Very nicely done!

  • are they still making music anyone???????? these guys killed the 80's----shout out to the art of noise!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey where can I get an mp3 of this? I do not to rip it straight from the video because of its quality after ripping?

  • Never will get tired of hearing the Art of Noise....

  • @jblackrupert - Same here.

  • Being over 40 sucks, but at least we were the right age to enjoy all of ZTT the first time around!

  • You are my spiritual sibling...perfect.

  • HEY i love that "hey" firestarter and D.N.A. use that hey, is this the first hey?

for thoes of you that know what im talking about you=awsome

  • I used to wash dishes to this song.....watching the video had me on the floor laughing.

  • Something interresting - maybe - or not:

the "dum" sample is from YES - Leave it

the "trululu" sample is from the Andrews sisters - beer barrel polka.

And: It's not Anne Dudley saying: to be in England...

  • I believe the drums are also Alan White (Yes) from the 90125 sessions...?

  • thats right!

  • Art of Noise,Yes,Frankie Goes To Hollywood,Seal. Yes, Trevor Horn is a fantasic british producer.

  • @Tornado1994 he also worked on FGH?

  • Yup. He sure did.

  • Cool! so he worked in my favorite bands.

  • You should check out all of the ZTT stuff from the mid-1980s... Propaganda! And Yello, not a ZTT act, but could/should have been.

  • Ok.

  • The proper answer is... YOU ARE CORRECT, SIR, as I am.

But I'll take what I can get. Have a great weekend.

  • Whoops! Thought you were referring to my "Alan White" comment, sorry. Seriously, buy (or download, ahem) Propaganda's "Secret Wish" it will change your life. Well, maybe not, but it's a great listen.

  • I use to breakdance on the streets

    with art of noise . . .

  • I used to Dj and The art of Noise was one of the groups that I cut my teeth on. Beatbox was the greatest DJ record that I ever heard. Played that one so much till we wore a groove straight thru. Love this song

  • this brings back memories, i played this constantly on my walkman in the 80's- GREAT STUFF!

  • love this version!! Thanks man!

  • nice!

    quite informative on the trivia/info

lots of things about the three versions that i did not know

    excellent!

  • Awsome job is an understatement! very kick ass!!!!!!

  • Nicely done. Thanks for the edit.

  • milltownrollers,very well put together!!

  • Darn awesome!

  • Nice. Really.

    Thank you ,DRJTRON!

  • * * * * *

  • I like this version

  • Thanks for this...brings back memories

  • Love this goofy '80's video though and your very nice edited version, DPJTRON.

  • They are clearly saying 'Close to the EDGE' and not 'EDIT'. I've always wondered why no one ever bothered to fix the title.

  • The drum beat sample came from the song from YES "Close to the Edge"...... Just a theory that Paul Morley came up with the alternate tiltle "Close to the Edit" You do have to understand that AON was a group that probably had unlimited access to a recording studio and there were probably dozens of different mixes for Close to the Edit that were made...

    mixing..... editing.......

They were probably one of the top studio musicians along with Pink Floyd.

  • Thanks for that bit of info, DPJTRON. :-)

  • @DPJTRON Sorry you are both wrong.. the name Close (To The Edit) came from JJ Jecazalik.. Close To The Edge by Yes was used as a model for the track. Hence why it was originally called "Close To The Edge" as a bit of a joke. JJ thought to change it to (To The Edit) which they all liked.

The drum beat was not taken from Close To The Edge. the drums were played live by Alan White of Yes in the ZTT Studios, and sampled by the band.

  • @missdj10

perhaps because thats the title the band gave to their song? i wonder if that had anything to do with it. Certainly editing and edges are unrelated. no connection whatso ever so there any kind of metaphoric thing going on ... hhm.m.... mmhm.

  • right

  • @missdj10 The title is correct. The "edit" or the edit block was when reel to reel tapes were manually cut and tapped together to make edits. This was the craze back then and the song, being highly edited, fits the title regardless of the lyrics.

  • The little punk girl must be in her 30s now. Do you think she looks back on this fondly?

  • nuttin wrong with duran duran at least they snagged a bond film with view to a kill . 80s are so gone oops wait pet shop boys are back in thier 50s and sound same art of noise has some thing violenlty audio

  • Consider We could all be listening to Duran Duran and there like to eternity. 2000+ dance music began somewhere. Just fooking get a grip! Lighten up!!!

  • The thing is spoiled by the "look what I did" comments all the way through. Get over yourself, and allow your effort stand on it's own. It's like trying to listen to a song with some dork saying, "Here comes the good part!" If I agree with you that you're wonderful and that you know a lot, will you put out a version without the superfluous, self serving distractions?

  • Well its been up on line for almost 3 years,,, I added the annotations last year not just to show on what I did. There is also unknow trivia about the making of the video and the casual viewer doesn't even know how many different video edits of CTTE are out there.

  • Thank you DPJTRON for the annotaions. They are not distracting at all. I learned about Sylwia who isnpired me to write s short horror tale. I learned why they made another video which is crap compared to the classic original. Thanks for this great version of the song.

  • @DPJTRON I don't see what the problem is. I appreciated the extra information and I have no idea why that person thinks it was some sort of ego trip, so thank you.

  • I don't know if this is a new feature or what, but you can turn off annotations in videos. The button is embedded in the controls at the bottom right of the screen. Problem solved.

  • @angelboychanman

    Totally!

  • @angelboychanman: OMG - could it be that he does that for copyright reasons? Get smart yourself and enjoy da music ! LOVE !

  • @angelboychanman You can turn the captions off. Stop being a prick. This is a great piece of work.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, critique.

  • @angelboychanman y'know, you can always "turn off" the comments. It never hurts to have the options.

  • Oh thank you thank you thank you! I thought I'd never see or hear of The Art of Noise again!

  • thanks for posting this "comprehensive" work on aon this music and video is a great thing!!! congratulations

  • To be in England..in the summertime..love that bit.

  • MONSTER classic groove from trevor horn, ann dudley and the gang -

its interesting, they came from the traditional school of music making and ended up doing something really electro fresh and innovative here

  • very nice work!

  • I also liked their bizarre stuff like Bright Noise and The Army Now.

  • This extended version is great! One of my favorite old school club party jams! I LOVE IT!

  • wore out my cassettes of these over and over years ago. Went and saw them in France in 1989

    ~~*LOVED IT*~~

Happy Music... need more of it these days!!

  • Loved this. Hadn't heard the the last ten minutes for ages. Had it on record for ages.

  • Very enjoyable - thanks for making this. Particularly enjoyed the commentary.

  • This was one of my favorite groups when I was in high school.

  • Great video...Heavenly!

  • the destruction symbolises the end of conventional instruments for making music, electronica is the way forward.

  • good music, but i got tired of the destruction going on in the video. think about construction with creativity, not destruction. creative construction engages the mind and is more interesting.

  • I really, REALLY enjoyed this. Thank you!

  • Nice video. Art of noise rocked in the 80s

  • Did they create that awesome unique beat themselves like the other "instruments" or did it already exist?

  • They created it themselves. Art of Noise did everything themselves. Using pre-fab "beats" (that is, OTHER peoples music[!]) was an insane horror that came and was mostly utilized in the '90s and now.

  • Thanks. I like their earlier stuff...more raw. If I recall correctly I bought a vinyl 12" single in a transparent vinyl sleeve. The record itself was multicolored, not black, and had the Art Of Nois masks on both sides. The track I liked was "Close Up" (I think) and was a variance of "Close To The Edit". It had a long but wonderful piano tune. I wonder if there was ever a video for it?

  • to answer your question. no they don't have a video. just the song and different clips. just type in art of noise close up and you will get it. just thought you like to know.

  • this version is the one i bought years ago on a 12" i think that there was 2 versions on of this song and 1 other song

  • There are at least a handful of versions out there. It's bizarre hearing them all and wondering which came first, which were was just experimental, which one does the AON consider the "official" version?

  • There are 3 official versions...ZTT considers all 3 official

The live stop motion animated one came first and someone at ZTT records didn't think the people in the first video truly represented AON, so they made another video with 2 alternate versions.

  • Brilliant video and sound. AON were secret then, we now know them as Trevor |Horn, Anne Dudley et Al.

  • The internet rendered little and what it did gave me a "Discontinued by the manufacturer" I suggest downloading Youtube Downloader. It will allow you to download and convert this to audio format. Fantastic mix and it is SHAME this was limited to Asian markets. As if western peoples cannot appreciate what they did here. Must be a matter of money.... as usual.

  • well shame on me for not paying better attention to what video i decide to comment on. My apologies to all.

  • just brilliant... pioneers way ahead of their time and one of few artists i treasure out of the 80's!...not like that bollocks like Wham that you hear getting played in crappy themed bars...but i digress....enjoy this brilliant song and video

  • thanks tldavis1230 i'm from the uk i remember watching this on this programme the tube which was broadcast from Newcastle where i live the 1st u.k. showing i think back in 1984

they also first played madonna in the u.k.b4 she became a superstar great show.

  • Brilliant video for a brilliant piece of music. Takes me way back.

  • absolute brilliant video cut from dpjtron.

  • I remember this song...thought is was killer even at 5 yrs old.

  • Brilliant! I enjoyed the added snippets of info as well... Thanks for your hard work in editing and sharing this video. Cheers!

  • good work... love the mix...thanks for posting

  • How about the REAL VIDEO instead of this phailed high school a/v homework project?

  • May I be the first to say "Fuck off, this is nice work"? Go play video games and leave the art to those who understand it.

  • i always liked this song. its really intersting and abstract.

  • Who could forget the kick ass groove that the Art Of Noise came with during the 80s? Good music is good music, even if you have to go across the pond to get it (in other words, overseas)...thanks for posting
