@simensolvang07 Hello, I did. It was shot on 3 cameras (2 PD150s and a domestic camcorder) and the sound is from a spaced pair of Rode mics plugged straight into one of the PD150s. Loads of compression and EQ in post!
@takminister Thanks for the info! What kind of rode mics did you use? (I have a K2 I am about to get modded.) I was blown away by the bass tone inparticular. It sounded so live which is rare. What kind of compressor did you use? Ratio? Slow attack fast release? What kind of eq? was it broad sweeps? Across what frequencies? I am starting to do more live recording myself and am planing on using 2 mic setups as well. If you dont want to give away any secrets I understand. Thanks again!
@simensolvang07 They were NT1s. Unfortunately I can't remember any of the settings I used to mix the audio. I probably boosted the bass massively and put everything through Vintage Warmer. Luckily the sound in the venue was great in the first place (it's a small venue). Good luck with your recordings.
OMG! Please, somebody tell me! What technique does Chris use to get his single stroke that fast!?!? Is he using finger, wrist, arm...? The motions are so tiny it seems like he isn't even using ANYTHING. Like all that speed just comes out of nothing...
You know, started watching that vid for Chris originally, but I'll be damned if that bass player isn't the business... and not because he got a lot of camera time either. He was killin' that tune.
You all should go easy on the sax player. She's hanging with some of the craziest rhythmic people on the planet. Maybe she could have been more assertive on this tune, but she wasn't getting lost either. If she's a sub I have even more respect for her.
@ivanbamford Very true except I think the saxophonist is a dude... no?
Anyone who gets on stage with Dave and Foley is a special individual. I mean- to play Cris Cross the way that they do it was amaazing (another vid).
@jazzmac03 - def not bop or swing, but this is western music. Tons of inflections that point to funk/fusion/hip hop, and free jazz so I would make the case that this is western.
@dimsim49 Chris is the leader of the band. Sax player was ready to stop, but Chris wanted to hear more, and he wanted to hear it a certain way. The sax player is very sensitive. When Chris digs in, so does he. He never grand stands like many unseasoned musicians can do. Much respect to Chris b/c after yelling "Play" to the saxophonist, he starts wailing. THAT made him play.
@cssource no doubt about it, they're all playin jazz. The sax player definitely seems a little lost towards the end there, he gets left out of the dialogue between Foley and Dave. He sure isn't playin any bad notes though, and he has no problem blowin over Foley and Dave while there off in their own world, at least during the head. So overall I'd say he's killin it.
chris dave started out playing here in houston at the high school for performing and visual arts, made the STATE Jazz ensemble his freshman year...he played alot of local houston area gospel gigs with people such as Kim Burrell, but then he left houston and became probably the greatest drummer ever!!!
he might, he went through music school, playing in the symphonic band and stuff. he might not count though, because this is a whole different ball game.
ok,I'll say like that about the sax.If you are musician play music but not the fuzzy combination of notes. He plays here really disgusting parts but if it's the arrangement-shame to the guy that has made it!!!!!!
mine sounds really similar I have a tama rockstar 14" with a Remo Coated Controlled Sound Reverse Dot Snare Head (from guitar center) with the stock head on the bottom. My friend tuned it for me really really tight on top and the bottom is just like regular lol. If you know any gospel drummers around your area let them know they will get you this sound.
sadly, there are no gospel drummers in my country... I also tuned my snare (14x5.5) tight, but it doesnt sound like that, probably it's important to choose the right head. I have Remo coated ambassador
download audacity and record from the stereo mix that comes out the computer :) theres videos that show that here on youtube I think this guy called jimmyr did a good tutorial on it.
there must be a particular reason why chris dave chose this cat on sax that i clearly just cant see! I mean I don't like talking badly about people. He's hangin in there i guess but cmon man. with chris dave and foley? I don't know bruh!
Kudos for the sound on this video - everything is really clean! It needs to be for these kinds of musicians. Fun video to watch. We get to see another side of Dave - he's giving orders!
Does anyone know who recorded this and how? (straight out the board? converters? mics? setup? any mixing in the box?)

@ThePhodut i think hes just finger and wrist dribbling though. then he practiced the eff out of it lol
wagglemonkey 7 months ago
@wagglemonkey Yeah, but is it just me, or does he frequently play with index finger extended? Does that somehow affect his speed?
ThePhodut 7 months ago
@ThePhodut index finger extension? i think thats just his knuckle poking out. getting rid of the index finger would ruin his fulcrum.
wagglemonkey 7 months ago
@wagglemonkey He doesn't really do it in this video. You can notice it in Indulging in Such, though.
