  • Does anyone know who recorded this and how? (straight out the board? converters? mics? setup? any mixing in the box?)

  • @simensolvang07 Hello, I did. It was shot on 3 cameras (2 PD150s and a domestic camcorder) and the sound is from a spaced pair of Rode mics plugged straight into one of the PD150s. Loads of compression and EQ in post!

  • @takminister Thanks for the info! What kind of rode mics did you use? (I have a K2 I am about to get modded.) I was blown away by the bass tone inparticular. It sounded so live which is rare. What kind of compressor did you use? Ratio? Slow attack fast release? What kind of eq? was it broad sweeps? Across what frequencies? I am starting to do more live recording myself and am planing on using 2 mic setups as well. If you dont want to give away any secrets I understand. Thanks again!

  • @simensolvang07 They were NT1s. Unfortunately I can't remember any of the settings I used to mix the audio. I probably boosted the bass massively and put everything through Vintage Warmer. Luckily the sound in the venue was great in the first place (it's a small venue). Good luck with your recordings.

  • @takminister, the whole gig is just awesome. I know it might be a dumb question, but can you get this on dvd somehow?

  • This blows my mind how 'out there' it is and yet stays so musical throughout and that is why I love it!

  • just fucking with the mind hahaha

  • play thaat hoorn

  • "PLAY! PLAY, PLAY!!! PLAY LIKE HARD N SHIT!! lmao....even when he's salty he's too cool.......these cats are SMASHING

  • this is so bad-ass...

  • This is coming out of some Ornette Coleman type shit.

  • is he wearing an HV jacket!

  • Jedi mind.

  • haha at 2:07 it totally looks like chris is played fast forward :D

    he is sooo badass

  • ... i like his bass :X...

  • Kimbo Slice on bass! lol

  • OMG! Please, somebody tell me! What technique does Chris use to get his single stroke that fast!?!? Is he using finger, wrist, arm...? The motions are so tiny it seems like he isn't even using ANYTHING. Like all that speed just comes out of nothing...

    Wait.

    MINDPOWER?

  • @ThePhodut i think hes just finger and wrist dribbling though. then he practiced the eff out of it lol

  • @wagglemonkey Yeah, but is it just me, or does he frequently play with index finger extended? Does that somehow affect his speed?

  • @ThePhodut index finger extension? i think thats just his knuckle poking out. getting rid of the index finger would ruin his fulcrum.

  • @wagglemonkey He doesn't really do it in this video. You can notice it in Indulging in Such, though.

  • So great....reminds me of King Crimson.

  • Lovin these clips!!!

  • At 3:08, Foley becomes my hero with that chord, haha.

  • no one man should have all that power! chris daddy dave is the man!

  • Houston's Own Jazz Great...on drums....Mr Chris Dave.....Chris "Daddy" Dave

  • this is fucking sick!!!!!!!!! thanks for the upload!

  • that groove is so sick... makes my face go spastic

  • You know what? This reminds me a little bit of the Albert Ayler trio, like Ghosts and shit. Yeah, I dunno if anybody agrees with me... but yeah.

  • Hi-Viz Bass -good to see health and safety at work (and kicking serious buttocks)

  • his single stroke roll is amazing

  • Coooooooooooooool !

  • What kind of O-Zone is he using on his right?

  • @SSselfsponsored probably an evolution, but cant really tell

  • I want his drum set.

  • You know, started watching that vid for Chris originally, but I'll be damned if that bass player isn't the business... and not because he got a lot of camera time either. He was killin' that tune.

  • soooo inspiring!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Chris Dave fulfills my inner rhythmic needs

  • who is travis barker?

  • @wagglemonkey nobody to chris dave lol!

  • You all should go easy on the sax player. She's hanging with some of the craziest rhythmic people on the planet. Maybe she could have been more assertive on this tune, but she wasn't getting lost either. If she's a sub I have even more respect for her.

  • @ivanbamford Very true except I think the saxophonist is a dude... no?

Anyone who gets on stage with Dave and Foley is a special individual. I mean- to play Cris Cross the way that they do it was amaazing (another vid).

@jazzmac03 - def not bop or swing, but this is western music. Tons of inflections that point to funk/fusion/hip hop, and free jazz so I would make the case that this is western.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

  • at 1:24 sounded like somebody n the audience had an orgasm lol

  • i don't think the sax player has ever felt whiter

  • THE SAX PISSES ME OFF, funny when chris is telling him what to do

  • @dimsim49 Chris is the leader of the band. Sax player was ready to stop, but Chris wanted to hear more, and he wanted to hear it a certain way. The sax player is very sensitive. When Chris digs in, so does he. He never grand stands like many unseasoned musicians can do. Much respect to Chris b/c after yelling "Play" to the saxophonist, he starts wailing. THAT made him play.

  • is all this improvised......

  • great music. but i didnt like the sax :-(

  • are there any videos of them playing with their actual sax player?

  • PLEASE MAKE LOVE TO ME

  • the look that chris gives foley at around 1:11 and foley's reaction is absolutley priceless. and the ends where they all walk off is beasty. lol.

  • 9:20

  • that bass lick is ri-dunk-u-lus !!!! any one know what it is?

  • @jgv93 yeah, Foley's killing that line, I love watching him play with Chris

  • foly is the best. He's only musician thats been able to distract me from chris dave so far.

  • The most inventive drummer today.

  • the jazz player is kick ass, i don't know what everyones hussing about. he completes the sound in a different and meaningful way.

  • @cssource no doubt about it, they're all playin jazz. The sax player definitely seems a little lost towards the end there, he gets left out of the dialogue between Foley and Dave. He sure isn't playin any bad notes though, and he has no problem blowin over Foley and Dave while there off in their own world, at least during the head. So overall I'd say he's killin it.

  • @ericwolff6 agreed! love the solo right around 5:00. so twisted souding

  • from 1:00 to 1:13 is it singles or doubles? cant understand..

  • chris dave started out playing here in houston at the high school for performing and visual arts, made the STATE Jazz ensemble his freshman year...he played alot of local houston area gospel gigs with people such as Kim Burrell, but then he left houston and became probably the greatest drummer ever!!!

  • chris dave is insane

his counting is truly out there ... if he evens counts at all

  • he might, he went through music school, playing in the symphonic band and stuff. he might not count though, because this is a whole different ball game.

  • Chris Dave is so MUSICAL...that first minute and a half alone coulda been the whole video...and that was jus him playin!

  • ok,I'll say like that about the sax.If you are musician play music but not the fuzzy combination of notes. He plays here really disgusting parts but if it's the arrangement-shame to the guy that has made it!!!!!!

  • He's definitely playing a consistent melody. This isn't bebop or swing yo! Its music. Everything isn't supposed to be westernized

  • @jazzmac03 for real!!!!!!! music is music!!!! cudnt agree more with u

  • The sax player is the promoter, their actual sax player couldn't make the gig. This guy just jumped in, and I think he did pretty well considering.

  • @Rambonbon Really!? That's very interesting. If this be it-then that dude on alto is truly a God.

  • @MrPan222

    are you serious?

    .......comment ignored

  • Damn for those who are complaining about the sax player - I don't see you up there. :-) put up or shut up.

  • Someone, please tell me how to get that snare sound like this? :)

Chris is amazing! discovery for me

  • mine sounds really similar I have a tama rockstar 14" with a Remo Coated Controlled Sound Reverse Dot Snare Head (from guitar center) with the stock head on the bottom. My friend tuned it for me really really tight on top and the bottom is just like regular lol. If you know any gospel drummers around your area let them know they will get you this sound.

  • sadly, there are no gospel drummers in my country... I also tuned my snare (14x5.5) tight, but it doesnt sound like that, probably it's important to choose the right head. I have Remo coated ambassador

  • @prankas use some type of emperor

  • damn i wish i could download this, and not those crappy youtube download jawns

  • download audacity and record from the stereo mix that comes out the computer :) theres videos that show that here on youtube I think this guy called jimmyr did a good tutorial on it.

  • from 1:32 it sounds like a record scratched. unbelievable

  • there must be a particular reason why chris dave chose this cat on sax that i clearly just cant see! I mean I don't like talking badly about people. He's hangin in there i guess but cmon man. with chris dave and foley? I don't know bruh!

  • Wtf is the sax player doin up there with chris dave? It makes no sense and he's getting owned.

  • Foley is Sick!!

this song is from his debut cd from 1992 !?!?

  • Those first patterns he played with the ruffs before that stroking single stroke roll was smooth!!!

  • Those are singles? I though they where strokes!!! (LOL)

  • 1:30

Chris is like "I know you like that" lol

He can be so gangsta sometimes.....Lol....

  • Yo Homie Good Look!!! ....Pook

  • i would also like to know that is too. always wanted one... but would first like to know name of it before i buy one :).

  • What is that chain that he attaches to the cymbal stand called?

  • i think pro.mark makes them. Still dont know what there called tho.

  • thats singles stroke roll in the begining is just the most out of this world thing i have ever seen

    god lord im sweating

  • chris dave is all about single stroke rolls.

  • lol.. thank you for the info.. ;)

yeah i can tell that.. he prolly took the secret classes budy rich took back in the day aahah

  • Kudos for the sound on this video - everything is really clean! It needs to be for these kinds of musicians. Fun video to watch. We get to see another side of Dave - he's giving orders!

  • great!!!

  • Did dudes reed break???

  • For some reason this sax player reminds me of Michael Lewis from Happy Apple a little. It might be the whole bass/drums/sax thing.

  • REAL MUSICIANS

  • YEAHH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • CHRIS IS THA ILLEST

  • Are those O-zone hi-hats? Look at 2:56

  • bro It's hhx ozone top, aax picante hand crash bottom.

    18"(!!!!!)

I tried this combo at home, and yes, it really does sound this dope lol.

  • OMG I have the AAX version of the O-zone ccrash.....I'm soooo gonna buy another 18" crash and do that!!!

  • but those have some percussion atached..

also are you sure those are 18"? never realized they were that big lol
