@unlikeanyotherhuman Sadly, no. This level of quality was reserved only for the top shelf lines. In ~2000 SONOR discontinued production of deep-drawn metal shell snares. They still make high quality metal shelled snares, but none are seamless. The Designer was the end of the seamless shells. The seamless Designer, Signature & Phonic snares are now selling for premium $ on the used market. The Designer drums are super hard to come by, having only imported 7 into the USA in 2000.
No, it isn't just looks, the bead increases the strength of the shell by stressing it slightly. It is less likely to deform under high stress this way. I wouldn't have thought that it would matter with a Steel snare anyways, with steel being so strong.
In theory it will also inhibit resonance and change the tone slightly too, but I doubt the differences would be audible.
I see now why these sonor drums are so expensive, because they have to spend a great deal of money and time treating all the contaminating crap they produce when making their drums.
i bet it's because the safety goggles can get the tiniest thing on them, and the percision of these drums could be altered by a tiny spec, so they want the best percision they can have, thats whats makes Sonor so amazing is precision
The SONOR Phonic, Signature & Designer Series along with the original Ludwig Black Beauty were made that way. SONOR quit making seamless metal snares about 2000...not sure if the current Black Beauty models are seamless or not. It's a very costly & time consuming process.
this is like watching how a Rolls Royce is made

Sick drums, and Environmentally friendly?

Personally, I liked it right off the first lathing stage and after a bearing edge.
Give it to me right there...dirty and all...bet it would sound great!
Maybe hammer it a little too.

Why do they fold the senter?
Looks?
maggotvenger94 2 years ago
Yes, just looks. The Ferro Designers did not have a center bead.

@maggotvenger94 Id say its for rigidity
sbowman128675 1 year ago
@maggotvenger94 folding of the seam is done to strengthen the shell (protection against going out of round)!
BigRooster747 1 year ago
@maggotvenger94 not just looks:) I believe by just folding the center, it makes the shell more tougher and sturdier. Science and music:)

BrannDailorIsMyHero 3 years ago 2
No, it's because the saftey laws were not as strick at that time. Today you would not see that.

seriously though, in Soviet Former GDR, safety goggles wear YOU!

thats the dumbest thing i'ver ever heard.
you obviously have never worked in a machine shop
you cannot be that precise by eye, dials and other measuring tools on the machine itself are where the precision is.

It's really cool to see how they are made. I never knew that the snare shell started out as one flat disc.

I think the Ludwig 400 series (the Supras) and that Black Beauties are still seamless.
