It's an eliptical not parabolic mirror. At close distance the light is focused to a point just like the sun with a magnifying glass. But at a distance it spreads back out. Thus it is like a flashlight at most usefull distances. But at close range it's like the sun and a magnifying glass.

..everyday halogen bulbs burn @ high temps. a 300 watt will climb towards 950+ degrees F. a 75 watt halogen, about 270 degrees F. 970F will start paper on fire in about a minute. of course, there is no real heat danger range to speak of..air is a preety good insulator & these ain't microwaves or lasers, after all. a $1 cig lighter will light paper in a fraction of the time :)

Laser light is produced by radiation from the excitment of particles. Heat produced by this flashlight is caused by the laser beams impacting the target and the radiation exciting their atomic state. The heat lost in a halogen system is because u are burning the filament.
