@BlackCadian nice theory but totally wrong. insects dont have lungs in the same way like humans. they breath through their skin. this passive oxygen resoprtion is less effective than active breathing with lungs. thats the main factor that limits their size. millions of years ago the oxygon level of the air was higher, insects were bigger.

the chitin exoskeleton is not as heavy as you think, its quite light and has even special abilities like reflecting parts of radioactive rays.
