  • Ich bin ein lamp.

  • i actually teared up over a LAMP! .....im ok with that.

  • Indeed, best nyu assignment ever!

  • best... nyu assignment...ever!

  • I haven't wanted to hug a lamp so much since I was a kid and watched the Brave Little Toaster.

    ;_; C'MERE, YOU

  • Still seems like a waste of a perfectly good lamp - and that's to say nothing of the light bulb.

  • Plus One Per Diem anyone?

  • bitch left me out in the rain she gon get slapped

  • swiffer copied this

  • The more I accidentally discover of Spike Jonze, the more I worship

  • i was all..."uh..."

    but then i lol'd.

  • Poor lamp. ='(

  • Haha that swede at the end. I don't normally say it but I did lol I'm gonna admit.

  • I love lamp :(

  • On my desk is a lamp that looks exactly like that. I am currently resisting the urge to give it a hug... ... ... ...aw the hell with it... *gets up and hugs lamp*

  • I don't care about the lamps feelings but doesn't this just perpetuate our habitual garbage problem? Not a very good message imo.

  • @mgalosi Maybe the switch on the old one broke. Maybe the new one uses three-way bulbs. Maybe the old one used lead paint. There are many good reasons for throwing old things out and replacing them with newer things.

  • hahaha, the greasiest swedish accent I've ever heard!

  • I had to sit thru an ad to watch... an ad. *sigh*

But the end made it totally worth it.

  • whats up fat lip ?

  • I'll never throw a lamp away again.

  • The lamp would later move on to get a job at Pixar.

  • @Eranmane E! True Hollywood Story...

  • A perfectly functioning appliance can be donated. That said, I still laughed like hell.

  • what's unböring?

  • guess I'm crazy, then...... ( :

  • Fuck you, man, I still identify with the lamp.

  • @Neonman78

    best youtube comment ever.

  • sry, my english is very bad, can you say me what the man says?

  • @DemetriaVolturi Many of you feel bad for this lamp. That is because you are crazy! It has no feelings! And the new lamp is much better!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA

  • i love the way she holds the lamp as if it was a baby being taken away. and yes i'm crazy.

  • But someone made that lamp. He or she put a piece of their heart into it, then it moved down the assembly line and it got other pieces of other people's hearts. Then it was lovingly packed, shipped and unpacked by numerous individuals, each taking care to get it safely to its destination. All of this, for nothing ;_;

  • @chinesemonk You're still not hurting anyone's feelings...

  • 41 crazy people voted this down

  • This ad made me remember people who actually betrayed companion cube.:'( So sad.

  • Sorry, could someone tell me exactly what the man says?

(I'm not native english speaker, I don't understand it all)

    Thanks.

  • @michelleMezze

    (Spoken with an Swedish dialect)

Many of you feel bad for this lamp, that is because you are crazy. It has no feelings, and the new one is much better.

  • The saddest little desk lamp.

  • Jesus, I'm never going to be able to throw out anything again, am I?

  • @Ramenth Come on. The trash has no feelings. And your new stuff is much better!

  • Ahahahahaha, this is freaking hilarious!

Made me feel all bad for the lamp just to get that ending!

  • This is pretty much what Toy Story is. Except they do have feelings! And when you throw them away, you don't just say, "Here, Mr. Lamp, just wait in the garbage until the garbage truck comes along." You say, "... and it crushes you, popping off all your little limbs, Action Barbie, perhaps cracking open your head, then you'll be sadistically shredded through and through, and after that, perfectly incinerated in a conflagration of flames! Have a nice end, Barbie, you bitch."

  • @ExtraordinaryWriter i think you might be a serial killer

  • @xtrakoner No, I just think the climax of Toy Story 3 was too emotionally heavy.

  • @ExtraordinaryWriter I never thought of that. This commercial could have been part of an "Appliance Story" for appliances with feelings.

  • i would have adopted the lamp.

  • Nerds need to stop attributing human emotions to inanimate objects, it's fucking stupid.

  • @ActionCarl Well, someone sertainly can't take a joke/ hasn't played Portal.

  • @ActionCarl for real? you want to completely disregard hundreds of years of literature, poetry and art responsible for thousands if not more famous works that rely on giving inanimate objects human emotions because you think it's stupid?

  • @ActionCarl

Unbelievable that some people are actually like this.

  • me likey

  • too bad Where The Wild Things Are blew a big dick

  • lol

  • But... the poor lamp just wanted to be loved. :(

  • Oh, gee..I was sad, then the guy said what he said and I started giggling.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  • I cried laughing

  • Anyone rember a Add were theres a blond kid playing with toys then the room starts shaking?

  • i can't believe it ! i saw this AD, like many years ago, in that time YouTube didn't even exist, and i am still remembering how it goes ! one the best ad ever !!!

  • @TaiFajzon me too! i never forgot it. hands down, best ad.

  • there is a chapter in this book called cheap: the high cost of discount culture, all about this advert. open your minds bitches.

  • spike jonze makes me want to direct tv commercials

  • i just thought the exact same thing!

  • i must be crazy =(

  • hahahaha I loled hard too when I saw it, I looked for it to show it to my mom ahaha, we do that usually, we feel sorry about our old things hahaha, it's so stupid!...we're crazy hahah

  • what year did this ad come on television?

    2002?

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

  • i freaken love spike jonze!!! this ad is sooo goood.

  • Aaaaaaaaaah thanks for the upload, I was searching for this ad a long time ! :D

  • hahahahahahahhaha

  • I loled so hard when I saw this he first time^^

  • Both are inanimate objects, yet you feel sorry for it.

  • That's brilliant :) The Swedish guy sounded a little like Nacho Libre for a second there..."You cray-zyyy"...

  • spike jonze makes me like commercials

  • LOL!!!! wow i feel sorry for the lamp

  • lmao~!

  • I actually was feeling sorry for the weighted companion lamp :(

  • That's because Spike Jonze is a fucking master poet.

  • If you'd watched the recent kanye west 10 minute ego-athon he directed you'd retract that.

  • Maybe you're right, but it sounds to me like you have a problem with the content and kanya, which isn't the directors job. Either way, I'm not going to watch it. I hate kanye.

  • So you're only prepared to view Jonze's work on subjects you like? How then, can you have a rounded enough perspective of his work as a whole to call him a master poet? What i'm saying is, his choice of projects can, in my view, colour how he is viewed as a director. And directing 10-minute long ego massages for cheap publicity or stacks of cash does not, in my book, a great director or master poet make.

  • Reread the first three words of my response. If you're looking for a fight, leave me alone.

  • No fight wanted here. Just making sure you had managed to grasp what i was saying.

  • I get the sneaking suspicion you just wanted to make sure that you were viewed as the one with the 'right' view of Jonze's work.

  • My personal view on this is that one or two bad choices in projects does not affect a person's talent.

Take Leonardo Da Vinci, for example. He wasn't a huge fan of doing portraits. He wanted to be an inventor, and design mechanisms for people. But nobody took him seriously at that. He had to do portraits to survive. The fact that he did them doesn't affect the fact that he had an amazing mechanical mind. Likewise, the fact that Jonze does 'portraits' does not lessen his poetic work in my eyes.

  • very well. put every artist has to pay the bills. I definitely wouldn't call jonze a sellout.

  • LOL!

  • I did NOT see that coming. That was awesome.

I can sympathize with the lamp though :(

  • spike jonze is my favorite director

  • If this ad made me cry, I don't think I want to see 'Where the Wild Things Are'. Kidding. I didn't cry. I laughed at the end.

  • It's the way he tell's 'em.

  • great ad but sheesh, could the audio sound any worse? nasty codec youtube!?!

  • haha! this was great!

  • Hahahh aw so cute :D

  • This is so delightfully manipulative!

  • LMAO, what an ending ! :-)

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Spike Jonze Rules!

  • Dumbass left the light bulb in.

I have a white and a silver version of the lap that got thrown out. Good fucking lamp.

  • the next lamp has been given the opportunity to replace the prior lamp... oh, but the new one is better. isn't this the same teleology used by hyatt hotels to fire their maids in boston (sept 09) ?

  • so true

  • hahahaha

  • *pooor lamp*

  • See Pixar's Red's Dream and Luxo, Jr., for inspiration and antecedents. The transgressive, confrontational element is pure Jonze.

  • Way too funny! Really sums up the whole IKEA feeling! Throw out that crap in your house and buy something new for a change! Sofas don't have to be kept for 30 years...!!!

  • Troped over here. Very glad I did.

  • Same. Damn you, Wiki Walks!

  • @absalom: Which trope?

  • Comment removed

  • Companion Cube.

  • The new one sucks! Stupid disposable culture.

  • Agreed!

  • Wes Anderson did some a couple Ikea commecials. Very funny as well. And also on youtube

  • ROFLMAO

  • 10/10, Jonze.

  • I had a one year assignment in Sweden and had such a blast showing Swedes how they we're being represented by IKEA abroad :)

  • hahah EPIC.

  • HAHA....i love this....Spike Jonze is a genius

  • I feel my heart break when the lamp turns off at the same time as the other one, but then at the end i just laughed my head off for ages. Brilliant!

  • U CRAZSEE! U CRAZSEE!

  • It in fact can not talk and will definetely not try to stab you.

  • HAHAHA!!

    i love this commercial.

  • The first time I saw this I must have laughed for five straight minutes. Funniest commercial ever.

  • Am I the only one who just realized that that it is now useless to save that lamp anyway whether or not you like now that it has probably short-circuted?

    just saying.

  • This is my favorite commercial ever.

  • XD Oh man, they completely got me.

And yeah, I'm crazy. =P But I only feel bad for the lamp 'cause of the expert camera work.

  • That's the point I guess. This is not the first time Spike has been exposing the lies of cinema.

  • I wouldn't call it a lie. He's just sorta "hanging a lampshade" on a popular trope. I don't know the name, but we've all seen it.

Just remember: tropes are neither good nor bad; they just are.

  • It's called "Companion Cube." I wonder where it got that name?

  • *snrk* Gee... I wonder. =P =)

  • that was sooo funny. i was starting to feel sorry for the lamp, maybe i'm crazy

  • Poor Old Lamp. :(

  • take that environment!

  • Noo! Weighted companion lamp!

  • Were you linked here by TV tropes?

  • Yes, I was.

  • I WAS!

But I saw the commercial on television when I was a youngin!

  • What did he say?? I'm not native so I don't get it. Can you guys please write the words he's saying???

  • "Many of you feel bad for this lamp

That is because you're crazy, it has no feelings

and the new one is much better."

  • that was awesome

  • But it is sad. The Weighted Companion Lamp would have never stabbed you.

  • No, it would never have threatened to stab you.

  • "IN FACT IT CANNOT SPEAK."

  • didn't know it was his awesome

  • Comment removed

  • inadament?

  • classic spike jonze. have to love it.

  • I'm hugging my bed lamp right now.

I will never let you go.

  • good idea, I'll do the same :)

  • LOOOL So funny the end^^

  • Wha-what?

  • yeah, just throw things away when your tired of them, we've got unlimited resources after all

  • LOL I haven't seen this commercial before. It was kinda like sad nostalgic, and this yodel man points out the obvious LOL AH! Too funny!

  • wtf?

  • Boo Hoo ... I want to bring in the little lamp out of the cold and rain :-(

  • That was hilarious

  • haha I love his swedish accent on his english!!

  • Thanks to Spike Jonze I could no more be able to throw anything away!!

  • Damn you Spike Jonze, you broke my heart.

  • How did heck has an israel/palastine debate poped up over an Ikea ad?

    Mad.

  • I've never felt such compassion for an inanimate object!

    I love Spike Jonze

  • XDDDDD awesome!!

  • I AM crazy! It's the only damn thing keeping me sane... Poor lamp. Poor palestinians. Poor Native Americans. Poor dodos... My sympathy for other things in this world is limitless.

  • palestine is not a nation. the west bank and the gaza strip are occupied territories. over a thousand people have died during the recent israeli terror attacks and our US tax money is funding the assault. keep in mind that about half of the palestinians are younger than 14 years of age. 14 YEARS OF AGE! and primitive?...just look into how israel has cut off supplies. its so fucking sad.

  • Well, that was a fact relieved, dehumanizing attempt at hate inspiring propaganda if there ever was one... By the way, in the future I would advice you to double-check your own ethics and morals before passing judgement over anyone else.

  • this was entirely based upon facts.

"primitive" is in terms of economic and social backwardness, literacy rates, health care, etc., basing their lives on religious traditions and lack of any technologic progress, justyfing killing of innocent women and children in bus stops.

"death loving" is in terms of the culture of martyrdom and shahada, where little kids are indoctrinated to hate and see suicide bombing as their glorious future.

and you, sir, fuck you and your country.

  • I do notice that your "primitive" argument effectively ignores asserting the predicament of the people living in Gaza... How well do you think the West Bank would fare if your borders were closed off and your neighbors seemed more or less intent on making your life a living hell? Frankly speaking, I think the Palestinians' hate is the most humane reaction given their situation, and neither you nor I would've been any different if we were in their shoes.

  • Thanks for derailing the video comments, dumbass.

  • I like the commercial a lot but it doesn't make me any more likely to buy any useless crap from IKEA. maybe I am crazy but... if your old lamp works... why go out and buy a new one? Oh yes I forgot! We're supposed to just consume consume consume like there's no tomorrow because all of our resources are infinite! how silly of me! Thanks IKEA!

  • You're crazy to not throw out your lamp, the new one is much better.
