I think Tonya's big "mistake" was not realizing that her true personality is much too aggressive and direct for a sport like figure skating, for God's sake.
...It's readily apparent that she's most natural and happy when she's doing things like fishing and cursing; she's more blue-collar in her temperament, and I think that being in figure skating just frustrated her immensely, because it was just too restrained.
It's too bad she didn't walk away from it, before all the ugliness.
