How is the KS rack compared to the nova desktop for slowly evolving pads and drones? Would a KS rack be better? I already have real analog keyboards for bass and leads.
Hey djcondra - You should hear the X Station. It's got an audio interface (USB / MIDI) and is an awesome MIDI controller for Ableton Live. The Micron and MicroKorg are great introductory synths though. I have one each. The Micron is pretty powerful really - I didn't know you can access all the parameters by pushing down the clear button ;)
Oh God, get over it kid. A Buchla? A fucking Buchla? They're only in museums and billion dollar universities. That's like saying your car isn't shit if it's not a Ferrari 250 GT California. I suppose we're not really synth players either unless were Wendy Carlos or the reanimated corpse Raymond Scott.
The Micron and MicroKorg don't even have real knobs, this thing's interactive and the sounds are pretty damn good for a $300 unit. We all don't have $2500 to just dump on Moog. Jeez, your a n00b.
Oh, and thanks a ton for the video, this solves a lot of question I had on this, man does it get dirty for such a cheap little synth. Can you do some with simple pads and keys in this stripped down, not techno/80s sounding fashion?
it is a very versatile synthesizer if you learn all the features. of course, cheezy emulations of analog gear are the simplest patches to create, but it certainly accomodates "thinking outside the box."
sounds just about identical to micron if you ask me... at least once you get rid of all the shitty presets and start using FM, PW, SH, etc, its hard to tell any difference. sure the interface is better but i'm a sequence/transpose junky plus the rhythm sequencer is just brilliant the way its implemented although sure its toy keyboard-esque you can get some great 70's drum machine sounding stuff for cheap digital sounding IDM loops
I've been using it since 2002 on nearly all my songs. This video was just to show off some of its capabilities for weird fx. Look up The Manitou on myspace to hear.
I have both the novation k station and I owned (but sold) my old alesis ion and micron. All three of them are excellent synths and perform more or less the same. The novation is quite a bit better in build quality though I prefer my micron because it's much simpler and a lot cheaper.
I bought mine new in 2002; it cost approximately $1,400 Canadian dollars including taxes & shipping from the nearest dealer (I believe it retailed for USD $899) - a lot of money but well worth it for the use I've got out of it. They now fetch around USD $460 used, and there have been several newer synths based on the K-Station's architecture (KS4, KS5, X-Station, Xiosynth).
Are you willing to sale this?

This thing kills the micron and microkorg. This is a real synth.
djcondra 3 years ago
wrong. a real synth is an ARP 2600, a Buchla 100, or a Minimoog Model D.
hotlanta71 3 years ago
Thats very true but this is much more of real synth than the mK and Micron.

buy an alesis micron instead.
Hoodedfigure831 4 years ago
alesis synths are notorious for bugs and breakdowns, novation is known for quality and durability, and this synth does waaay more.
