how much cocaine does it take to have that hi hat going at that speed?!
I read in "when giants walked the earth" (mick wall) that he used to keep and ounce bag between his legs during the set.
after the show the roadies would dismantle his kit carefully over a mat, and the amount of white powder that fell on that mat would be enough for the road crew.
shame really, he fucked himself up with that lifestyle. good story though.
John Bonham was an instinctively brilliant drummer. His rythms were precise and brilliant. Unfortunately, he was a binge alcoholic. He drunk alot very quickly, which ultimately killed him.
He was a really lovely guy, he loved his family and fans. Let this be a warning to all. Binge drinking is really bad for all concerned. RIP John, we will always love you.
I cant believe ya cut off rory gallagher, one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and get this..he was born in the ROCK hospital in ballyswhannon in co Donegal hehehe..he dead now..died back in 19dickity7
Mr. John Henry Bonham, had the great pleasure and honour to watch him in spring 1980 with LZ in Dortmund/Germany. Thank God for that. This man had his own style playin´ drums, very special and unique.
Nowadays, less people/musicians get their own style. That´s the problem.
I couldn't agree more with Patton303 - Bonham was so powerful yet the little things made his drumming legendary. He did more with a single kick pedal than most of these new dudes can do with a double!!
zep did the right thing to disband after losing Bonham. You lose anyone of those guys and its not the same, they all contributed to make them. they were 1 group of very taleted musicians. Bonham is one of the best musicians ever.
The great ones are the guys who have a signature sound. For example: You KNOW when it's Stewart Copeland playing and of course, John Henry Bonham. Or you KNOW when it's Alex Van Halen because of that dead brown sounding snare. Tim Alexander from Primus. Neil Peart has a throaty tom signature sound as well. That dude from Incubus, Jose Pasillas, I always know when it's him. Chad Sexton, signature snare sound. Phil Collins' open tom tom Gretsch sound. Give me some other drummers I'm missing....
@ThrashRoC I don't agree that he was the best. technically speaking, the best is Neil Peart, he's the perfect drummer. But no doubt that Bonzo is, at least, top 5. In my opinion, after Peart, he's the best!
@RaisuliLordoftheRiff Got another thing to say...check drumming magazine's opinions and I'm sure it won't make you 'LOL'. It isn't a formality that JB is the greatest of all time, there are plenty drummers who are just as good, if not better than him. And Neil Peart is one of them. And you probably don't even know who he is. LOL to that!
@irena7777777 that robot? who never improves? who writes all his drum solos? who is boring as hell? who plays without energy and emotion? I rank drummers in 3 catagories, there are the great drummers, the all time greats, then, the category of keith moon, for me, Neil Peart is in between great drummers, and all time greats, very boring..writes drum solos..wtf lol..neil peart is no where near the greatest and it is beyond me how one can think so
@jaqua524 Yeah, he is top of many drumming mag polls and is inspiration to a whole bunch of other respected drummers, so you must be right. Of course, you are a Zep fanboy and would never care to look at this objectively, and you quote other people's criticism of Peart verbatim just to back up your argument and make yourself feel better with the unfounded knowledge that 'your guy' is 'better' than everybody elses. you've never sat down and formed an original thought in your life, I imagine.
@irena7777777 okay, a few things here, and I will be mature about this, I am a fanboy of no one, Keith Moon is my favorite drummer, I have sat down and thought about this, Peart has great chops, technically, a genius, but he's a boring drummer, to robotic, no emotion, its my opinion man, take it easy. And based on your comment, and your judging and attacking my intelligence based on my opinionated comment, I can make a fair assumption that you are a moron, so fuck off asshole.
@irena7777777 I gave you my own opinion on Peart, read my comment I just wrote, I am a fanboy of no one except myself, I find Peart a boring overreated drummer, dont go jumping on him trying to defend him, its nothing personal. However, I can't take you seriously, you are judging me (a stranger to you), and my intelligence based on one opinionated comment, so although I can't be sure, to me, I can assume you are an impatient idiot, or closed minded, fuck off and have a great day :)
@jaqua524 Calm yourself, fanboy faggot...nobody is questioning your intelligence, or lack of. What you type is the giveaway. I am impatient. Impatient with cunts like you who know fuck all and profess to have 'intelligence'. You are a brainless twat, and that's patently obvious. Please go fuck yourself.
@irena7777777 wow, well since you are an impatient idiot who has attacking me like this, I think nothing of you. I will try to not stoop to your level, but you are saying this because of my opinion on Peart, think of that. Grow up, and learn how to communicate rationally with people, but I'm not trying to deal with that shit, so fuck off. I am in grad school for psychology. Don't waste your time responding, cause I am not going to look at it, I also feel very sorry for you.
@jaqua524 Grad school for psychology must also bear failures, one must assume. Anyway, who gives a fuck what you are or what you think you are. My opinion of you is that you are a dimwitted buffoon with questionable judgement. You obviously have a higher opinion of yourself but many like you have come and gone before, leaving not a trace of impact. You will fail. Of that, you can be sure.
@jaqua524 Peart is a great drummer, and Rush were a good enough band that they put to shame most modern bands, because music is in the gutter, but Rush was not competition to Zeppelin. Of course, who gives a shit. Both bands are essentially gone and part of history. Just enjoy what they did, and do whatever you can to bring some new hard rock back so we have something decent to listen to.
Uggh. I was a teenager and just so sad the day I heard Bonzo had died. It was just awful. My favorite band. I was all excited planning on getting to finally see them live when they would finally come touring for "In Through the Out Door".

@patton303 great analysis. Anyone that thinks solos are what makes a great drummer hasn't played in a band. The real question is could Zeppelin have existed with another drummer.
@patton303 Well stated Scott. John Bonham is one of the most powerful and profound drummers of all time. His greatness had nothing to do with any solos. He was so much more than flashy speed rolls and showmanship, he was rock n roll.
@patton303 Excellent use of phonological techniques and repetition through asyndetic listing. Its almost as though you can hear the beats he's playing when you read your descriptions of them. My old English teacher would be impressed...
@patton303 not too mention the insane shuffle on Rock and Roll!!! Drum Solos were just icing....the snare sound..the drum sound.....huge influence...sorely missed...:(
John Bonham was a true natural talent, and his sincerity and integrity as a musicians is what made him so great. He deserved every bit of credit he has ever received and more. He was a true artist, and has influenced so many with his musical expression. Truth is, he would have been just as great on any instrument he could have chosen to play. His playing spoke to our souls. We could identify with it. He will always be the most powerful and influential to me.
