I love this program. It's one of my favorite short programs. Sarah's skating is so free in this program. Nothing overly controlled. Nothing overly extended. Nothing overly performed.
Gusmeroli's Layback may not be as good but her other spins were. Hughes' basic skating was certainly NOT stronger, though...that's kind of an absurd statement, in fact. She completely wobbled on her blades at the end of the program and finished behind the music.
Gusmeroli displayed better musicality and had stronger jumps. She easily deserved to be placed ahead.
Looking back again now, I wonder if she received a deduction for going over-time. She was still spinning when the music finished, and she kinda fumbled to hit her ending position. That may have been a deduction.
I can understand the technical marks, because she had a very obvious flutz (back then the judges didn't scrutinize the flutz as much, they often gave skaters the benefit of the doubt, but if it was VERY obvious like Sarah's they would deduct), and a bit under-rotated on the combo jump.
However, all of her other elements were of a very high quality and I think her presentation marks should have been much higher... 5.7-5.9 maybe.
Yeah, I think that's about right. Also, her free leg was very high, and that makes the jump look a bit awkward. Her jumping technique really improved in the 2000-2001 season. But, yes, the presentation was far too low, and it should have been 5.7-5.9 as you said. The program was just so lovely. And her SPINS!! Of the top women at this competition, she had the only leg position that didn't make me cringe!!
That may be your opinion, but it's just not mine. I've always preferred the more classic bent. Kwan produced some lovely SPs, but I don't count this year's among them. I didn't care for the choreography either, but I mostly disliked the music selection.
The music is "Serenade Für Karla" by Karl-Ernst Sasse. I liked the piece (and the program) so much that I researched it. There's a lot of confusion, because whoever in the figure skating world distributed the title called it Serenade fur Klara. However, It's from the 1965 East German film, "Karla" (which was banned for years because of its politically charged content) for which Karl-Ernst Sasse wrote the score. Serenade Fur Klara is a snafu, and no such piece of music exists.

That double axel! The timing was beautiful to the D of the music. Just exquisite. These marks are crap and she deserved so much better here.

Hughes does not skate with more speed, nor are her edges better. Not sure what you're watching. The wobble certainly shows a lack of control too.

@Zuranthium OH WELL! this happened over 10 years ago so stop fighting about it!!!!!!!!

1. Maria Butyrskaya
2. Michelle Kwan
3. Irina Slutskaya
4. Vanessa Gusmeroli
5. Angela Nikodinov
6. Sarah Hughes
7. Julia Sebestyen
How on earth can you put Sebestyen above Gusmeroli? She doubled her solo jump.
Vanessa skated very well. Her performance had energy and her Lutz and Flip were both big and clean.
Hughes had problems on her Lutz and a bobble at the end of the program.

I like this SP much better than Michelle's from 2000 Worlds. So elegant and refined. I think her marks were a bit low.

Kwan's program was wonderfully musical. You don't need soft lullaby music for great skating.
