if you need that type of magnification then go for microscope that lens is too much for photography purpose. it shows how advance canon is in lens designing and manufacturing. nikon, canon and sigma makes these extraordinary lenses to show off there technological extremes. love to see their science in action.
I keep thinking about jumping to canon (from nikon) only because of this lens...
But, in truth, I've come to the conclusion it's very similar in the end to a 1x macro lens with extension tubes. It's a move back and forth to get DOF and focus thing with this very expensive lens... much the same as again, a 1x macro lens with extension tubes.
Have you had experience with both setups? and if you have, how is it better to work with the 65mm 5x macro lens?
@otas32 Flexible in magnification ratio. With ext. tubes you must remove the lens and add or remove some tubes. With this guy you can just turn the ring. Other than it it is stepless.

I would really appreciate insights.

@otas32 It's a way more flexible than any normal maco + ext. tube setup.

I can't believe the lens rose to $1000 from $800. I guess they've stopped manufacturing them?

1000USD? Wow! It was a good investment! :o) I cannot belive they stop to make it. It's probably because of the USD/YEN ratio...
