I've been doing parkour and freerunning since I was a kid. Over the years, i've progressively gotten better, and with the help of videos like this, I wouldn't be good enough to do parkour or freerunning bare foot and with atleast an excess 90 lbs. of wheight on my back. Keep up the good work with these videos.
@DemonDrills Hey im 11 but i am very intrested in freerunning is there a way an 11 year old could parckour or do i litteraly have to be older please reply i really wanna parkour :)
Hey I have a question I love parkour and I have been doing it for 14 months but I never could get the hang of climbups (I would say I am of medium skill so far) and my shoes constantly slip when I grab on to it but only the one I am not using to pull up with (if that makes sense) do you have any advice for this (and is it possible to have your own style of vaulting becuase I came up with a very effective and different vault and I am going to make a video to show it)
@Swissjar549 Well, MAYBE your shoes are just not good (be careful with flat shoes on wet durfaces, I got wounded that way), but most if not all of the difference should be made with simply technique.
And of course, if you're on a wall, you'll always somewhat slip. as long as it's minimal it's ok.
As for the vaults, well, if they work and you're at ease with them, go ahead! it's not like parkour was just a set of fixed moves.
Oh my fucking GOD! I managed to pull this off, multiple times in school, both with plain grip and with overgrip. Imma tell ya, the satisfaction is infinite!!!
@SilentShit9 pull ups and climb ups are very related movements because they both involve pulling your body up. this motion is primarily lats but also uses biceps and chest.

How do you do a climb up if you grab a ledge and there's no wall to put your feet on? Like let's say you do a wall run up a 10 foot barrier, but the ledge is protrudes like 6 or 12 inches from the wall, your feet are dangling, and you're hanging by only your fingers. Would you have to use your elbows to climb up? But that would be bad technique, or so I hear because it's not efficient? I hope you can visualize what I'm describing lol?
@5625local your blocking wrong, your jumping on the wall and away, instead of up. you need to roll your foot on the wall, so that you can jump up the wall instead of off the wall.
to train this, just rest your foot on the wall and try it out
people always make out like this is easy but for me this is WAY harder than learning a front somersault which a lot of people make out to be difficult
This requires both strength and technique i presume. As for the strength issue, could i have an estimation on how strong i need to be in order to pull this off? For example, how many pull ups would i need to be able to do to have enough strength to climb up?
@SuperBadAssMonkey@SuperBadAssMonkey You probably have the strength to already do a climb up, as there are many variations/ progressions. Here are a few:
@gyenming where are the few? By the way i am referring to a level 3 climb up. I can already do a level 2 where i need to dip up after bring my chest above the wall and my palms are on top of the wall. But i want to reach level 3 where once i pull myself up and my palms are on top of the wall, i can just top over the wall without pushing up.
@SuperBadAssMonkey@SuperBadAssMonkey You probably have the strength to already do a climb up, as there are many variations/ progressions. Here are a few:
@faiz434 you probly do the same thing i did first, dont hang on the tip of your fingers your hand/fingers need to be in a 45degrees angle try this it helps alot. (hope you understand what i try to tell).
ok i practiced a wall climb today on a thin concrete thing, it had perfect overgrib and a little hole for extra grib for my feet, and it work very well but when i dont have overgrib my feet slide away and instead of pulling my self up towards the wall i go back so i cant switch my hands, its a mather of training i guess.
everyone just try doing pullups and dips 15 a piece for about 3 days a week. Maybe 2-3 sets if you want. Just try to max out until your arms feel like they cant move. This way your muscle begins to try to push harder and learns to maximize effort even if you can't finish the dip or pullup itself. Do it for about 3 weeks and youll be fine. =]
did 15 pullups and 15 dips a day for around 3 days a week. 30 dips if I'm outside on my deck. Your body gets used to both of those motions in like 3 weeks. I was suprised that I could do it without actually knowing that would help. I use my right leg to wedge when my fingers grip the wall. Then, you try to throw your opposite knee up while pushing slightly with your hanging leg and once your up in the air slightly lean forward so your palms get ontop of the wall and push up like a dip.
demon, the only wall i can do this on is painted, and i dont have grippy shoes, so whenever i push my foot in, it slips, forcing me to rely only on my arms so i can never really get on top. any tips?
@katanaswordmaster i find that if your upper arm strength is not very good, you can always use your feet for pushing yourself up first and then slowly build your upper arm strength. :D
@DemonDrills Hey i have a problem im only able to do a pull up where my nose is level with the ledge/pole, i need to gain explosive power, and im not able to do muscle ups obviously, waht could i do as exlposive exercises which can get me from a oull up to the shitting grip from pull up to - wall dip REALLY need Help, any excersises is greatly appreciated, but remember im not that storng, so i cant just "DO" everything :(
@leafblowinSK8 Keep working on kipping pull ups and wall dips. Do them weighted if you can. When you do pull ups, pull as high as you can. The high you pull, the closer you are to a muscle up. So start doing chest to bar, then sternum to bar, then belly button to bar, etc. Also work on jumping muscle ups and muscle up negatives to start learning the technique. Be sure to stay symmetrical when you do this.
@leafblowinSK8 Do negatives. basically, jump up into a pull-up, then as SLOW AS YOU CAN, lower yourself down, and repeat. It will work your biceps and your lats. It's what I used to do before I couldn't even do a single pull-up, now I can do 11-12. It's really just about repatition. And of course, let your muscles rest aswell. best of luck man!
lol, its mostly the legs here, even tho it doesnt seem like he is using them, he is, He is using his right leg to give him a small push, I personally use both for this technique.. Peace out
yeah but sometimes i want to get full ROM for the best results and my body (chest mainly) goes well below my arms so i have to pull up then push, like a muscle up but side ways :P and i can barely do pull ups, my eyes get over the bar and that's about it but yeah i get what you mean, they're antagonistic pairs...
the foot helps a bit, just adding a little force. the jump up of course is where the foot truly comes in, as the forward force allows for the proper friction to allow a push
And is his foot giving him any support there? Coz wen i try to use my foot for a bit of support it just slips. is that because I hav very little grip on my shoes or coz I'm not supposed to do it?
Your shoes won't affect it unless they're made of Jell-o or something. You just need to get more leverage on the wall. If you really don't think you can do it with shoes, take them off. Your feet have better grip than any shoes.
Level 1: Climb up by any means possible. Using your forearm, throwing your leg up to the side, gritting your soon to be chipped teeth into the wall in a desperate attempt to pull yourself up.
Level 2: Pulling until your hands are on top of the wall, then follow through with a dip motion.
Level 3: Pull until your arms are completely straight on top of the wall, skipping the dip motion.
I see. But now i don't understand the dip motion. I mean i dont understand what it looks like. Ok that is a level three, i understand a level one, but what does a level two look like? mind linking me?
Nice Vid! I saw that your hands (while going to the "down" position) slip over the edge of the wall over and over, when I do that several times my hands are open (bloody) very quickly...how can I avoid that?
it depends what level of skill you perform them with. they are related movements so they are comparable to each other. a straight arm muscle up should take you as long, if not longer than a straight arm climb up.
I thoroughly disagree. This climbup is a technique that can get you up nice walls with square edges and good grip, and some limited deviation from that. For most people this won't be training strength, just co-ordination of the technique.
True, you may need to alter technique depending on the wall, but elements of this basic climb up still apply. The vast majority of walls have square edges. I don't think grip applies since an advanced traceur could still do this technique on a glass surface.
Strength and coordination are closely related in terms of neurological development. Increases in coordination can result in increases in strength, or visa versa. So yes, you could argue this trains both.
well you definitely need grip. maybe it's a function of fore-arm strength but it makes a big difference depending on the type of edge you talk about. slanted ones are obviously tougher. however, although varying in difficulty i think the basic form of the climb-up wouldn't change.
i think the main point is that this kind of climbs always work if the edge is grippy enough. the grip isnt really needed if the technique is right, and youre strong enough. I ve trained this technique continuously and i thing it works maybe for more than 80% of the walls.
Of the walls that you go to for Parkour, which you will be judging on their grip amongst other things before you start training there.
I've ran around when tired climbing stuff and can't recall ever using this basic climbup once. And not for a lack of ability or confidence in the technique, just incase you try that one on.
If you want to be able to climb out from the top of well suited walls in good weather when you're not too tired, then this technique is good for ease and kudos for correct execution and percieved level of ability. That's fine.
If you want to be able to reach places in any context, taking an average of all weather conditions, all places you could find yourself in, all states of awareness or fatigue, then this climbup techniqu hardly comes into the picture.
yeah i think you really got a point. Its obvious that in a discipline like this there cant be a universal technique that always works. If im doing spontaneous runs i just concentrate on holding the speed, so this climb up comes spontaneously if the conditions are right, sometimes after a catleap, wallrun etc realize that it wont work and i climb up the way i think it works best to hold the speed. but i use this technique most of the time. aslo its fun of course =)
yes, you want to use your legs to help elevate your body. good shoe grip helps but its more about technique. several times i have heard this excuse from people so i have switched them shoes to demonstrate that i can still do it with bad grip.
yeah..i can climb up on fences but on walls i just slip straight off. I was just wondering if legs are an important part of it. Im getting new shoes soon and thanks for the tutorials : )
I have spent 2 months training as hard as I can to do a climb up but it is still out of my league. When I train I do pull ups, kipping pull ups, push ups, push ups claps, dip and the inverted row. I am stronger now but, do you think I am missing something? And does it take more than 6 months to do a single climb up? What else do you suggest?
Just keep training, you will get there eventually. Everyone starts at a different level so its hard to say how long it should take you. Once you get up to around 10-15 dips and pullups, you should have the necessary strength to do a climb up. then it is just a matter of learning the technique.
i would say it would be easy to do negatives (reverse) start from the guy in this vids finishing position then go down. other than that i think its more technique than strength so just keep trying, the change of hand positon is probably the hardest part so just work on getting that smooth then try and push upwards. hope that makes sense. david
if you havent gotten it yet i can help, what you can do is regular climb up but when you get to about chest level you lay you chest/stomach on the top wall and change your hand position. then progress to what u see here
I can´t thank you enough for helping us rookies in parkour by uploading these tutorials. You know, I have had a lot of trouble with this passe muraille. I looked for many tutorials on this but they didn´t mention anything about how to put the hands after you pull up your body. They didn´t even say anything about strength training for parkour. I guess they think everyone has the strength to pull up easily. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this. Keep helping us!
1st time ive seen this done in detail, yet its one of the most important things to speed up movement. cheers, i finally understand why im failing at this!

Pull ups and dips!
DemonDrills 2 years ago
cheers love :P i need to find some thing i can do dips on...bike rails are too far apart, they kill my lats after one lol
JustElijah 2 years ago
They should'nt use your lats. Dips is a chest/tricep exercise - the opposite muscles of lats.
alltheway3 1 year ago
yeah but sometimes i want to get full ROM for the best results and my body (chest mainly) goes well below my arms so i have to pull up then push, like a muscle up but side ways :P and i can barely do pull ups, my eyes get over the bar and that's about it but yeah i get what you mean, they're antagonistic pairs...

Aint you killing your hands and your fingers?
MaTeX72 2 years ago
no, after a while your hands will develop callouses and become much tougher!
ColoradoParkour 2 years ago 28
@ColoradoParkour Ofc you have to remove calluses (only dead sking, nothing worth to keep)
shiryuq 1 year ago
@ColoradoParkour Callouses have nothing to do with strength.
SilentShit9 1 year ago
@ColoradoParkour Yeah and when you play the bass and already have callouses on your fingertips that's a good plus

the foot helps a bit, just adding a little force. the jump up of course is where the foot truly comes in, as the forward force allows for the proper friction to allow a push
Anjro0 2 years ago
its because u have little grip on your shoes, try and get running shoes, i had the same problem
connorgeary1997 2 years ago
And is his foot giving him any support there? Coz wen i try to use my foot for a bit of support it just slips. is that because I hav very little grip on my shoes or coz I'm not supposed to do it?
Murfylaw 2 years ago
how are your pull-ups? if you're a big dude it might be a matter of weight-to-armstrenght ratio. you kinda just pull yourself up,
Anjro0 2 years ago
Nah I'm a tiny guy, i just can't flick myself up that easily, I have to use my forearm and place it on the wall
Murfylaw 2 years ago
Your shoes won't affect it unless they're made of Jell-o or something. You just need to get more leverage on the wall. If you really don't think you can do it with shoes, take them off. Your feet have better grip than any shoes.
mrgfunkyman 2 years ago 4
Can any1 giv me a hand? I can can wall run up the wall and get into a shimmy position, but I'm not sure how exactly to pull myself up
Murfylaw 2 years ago
any idea what the song is?

Nice to see the usage of level threes. Not gonna lie just got em myself recently and they feel much better than the previous level!
jaycam63 2 years ago
may i know what you are talking about? haha i would like to know sorry im a parkour noob
WhoaThatWasAwesome 2 years ago
Level 1: Climb up by any means possible. Using your forearm, throwing your leg up to the side, gritting your soon to be chipped teeth into the wall in a desperate attempt to pull yourself up.
Level 2: Pulling until your hands are on top of the wall, then follow through with a dip motion.
Level 3: Pull until your arms are completely straight on top of the wall, skipping the dip motion.
:D
Interesting to see Teige post on here by the way.
payforaday 2 years ago 2
I see. But now i don't understand the dip motion. I mean i dont understand what it looks like. Ok that is a level three, i understand a level one, but what does a level two look like? mind linking me?
WhoaThatWasAwesome 2 years ago
the dip... from what i know is when u lay ur whole stomach onthe ledge or wall then do a pushup with ur arms and ur up th wall

Nice Vid! I saw that your hands (while going to the "down" position) slip over the edge of the wall over and over, when I do that several times my hands are open (bloody) very quickly...how can I avoid that?
LLuuuK 2 years ago
man up. ;)
over time, your hands will become tougher and they wont get torn up as easily.
DemonDrills 2 years ago
can u make a step by step guide for this and also what exercises should i practice so i can learn this
joealtair3000 2 years ago 2
which is harder, muscle up or this?
winster626 2 years ago
it depends what level of skill you perform them with. they are related movements so they are comparable to each other. a straight arm muscle up should take you as long, if not longer than a straight arm climb up.
DemonDrills 2 years ago
@winster626 Muscle ups are harder, because you don't use legs for support :)
shiryuq 1 year ago
Is it possible,to do climb up very fast without muscle ups training ? :)
Angelold 2 years ago
not rlly, no
GLINA126 2 years ago
"any shape wall"
I thoroughly disagree. This climbup is a technique that can get you up nice walls with square edges and good grip, and some limited deviation from that. For most people this won't be training strength, just co-ordination of the technique.
Teghead 2 years ago
True, you may need to alter technique depending on the wall, but elements of this basic climb up still apply. The vast majority of walls have square edges. I don't think grip applies since an advanced traceur could still do this technique on a glass surface.
Strength and coordination are closely related in terms of neurological development. Increases in coordination can result in increases in strength, or visa versa. So yes, you could argue this trains both.
Good to see you comment here. :)
DemonDrills 2 years ago
well you definitely need grip. maybe it's a function of fore-arm strength but it makes a big difference depending on the type of edge you talk about. slanted ones are obviously tougher. however, although varying in difficulty i think the basic form of the climb-up wouldn't change.
lagenius22 2 years ago
i think the main point is that this kind of climbs always work if the edge is grippy enough. the grip isnt really needed if the technique is right, and youre strong enough. I ve trained this technique continuously and i thing it works maybe for more than 80% of the walls.
stylemonsta 2 years ago
Of the walls that you go to for Parkour, which you will be judging on their grip amongst other things before you start training there.
I've ran around when tired climbing stuff and can't recall ever using this basic climbup once. And not for a lack of ability or confidence in the technique, just incase you try that one on.
Teghead 2 years ago
If you want to be able to climb out from the top of well suited walls in good weather when you're not too tired, then this technique is good for ease and kudos for correct execution and percieved level of ability. That's fine.
If you want to be able to reach places in any context, taking an average of all weather conditions, all places you could find yourself in, all states of awareness or fatigue, then this climbup techniqu hardly comes into the picture.
Teghead 2 years ago 2
yeah i think you really got a point. Its obvious that in a discipline like this there cant be a universal technique that always works. If im doing spontaneous runs i just concentrate on holding the speed, so this climb up comes spontaneously if the conditions are right, sometimes after a catleap, wallrun etc realize that it wont work and i climb up the way i think it works best to hold the speed. but i use this technique most of the time. aslo its fun of course =)
stylemonsta 2 years ago
true in fact u should be able to do a climb up on every wall (properly i mean), but that's like u say, training.
dragoonrover 2 years ago
when i try this the wall rough most the time and it hurts your hands is there a way to over come this
looselibra333 2 years ago
Yes, MAN UP!
Or you can bathe your hands in surgical spirit, which will make your skin tougher, if you don't want to wait for that to happen naturally.
Teghead 2 years ago 3
that is some ridiculous ability, definitely something to aspire to be able to do

bindthebutler 2 years ago
do you have to push up with your leg when doing the climb up, because i have no grip on my shoes so its all upper body for me : (
MckMick 2 years ago
yes, you want to use your legs to help elevate your body. good shoe grip helps but its more about technique. several times i have heard this excuse from people so i have switched them shoes to demonstrate that i can still do it with bad grip.
DemonDrills 2 years ago
yeah..i can climb up on fences but on walls i just slip straight off. I was just wondering if legs are an important part of it. Im getting new shoes soon and thanks for the tutorials : )
MckMick 2 years ago
I think i need more strength in my arms...because I keep trying to use my legs more and end up banging up my knees.

that wasnt helpful at all. now i just want to hurt you , i think this has had a negative effect on me...pfftt

CAPITANheathenheart 2 years ago
Just keep training, you will get there eventually. Everyone starts at a different level so its hard to say how long it should take you. Once you get up to around 10-15 dips and pullups, you should have the necessary strength to do a climb up. then it is just a matter of learning the technique.
DemonDrills 2 years ago
THANKS A LOT! I
I´ll keep busy!!!
CAPITANheathenheart 2 years ago
Well, I just wanted to tell you that I grew stronger and now I can do the climb ups and muscle ups. Thanks to your advice I got to the next level.
CAPITANheathenheart 2 years ago
i would say it would be easy to do negatives (reverse) start from the guy in this vids finishing position then go down. other than that i think its more technique than strength so just keep trying, the change of hand positon is probably the hardest part so just work on getting that smooth then try and push upwards. hope that makes sense. david
davidgreavespk 2 years ago
thanks!
CAPITANheathenheart 2 years ago
if you havent gotten it yet i can help, what you can do is regular climb up but when you get to about chest level you lay you chest/stomach on the top wall and change your hand position. then progress to what u see here

Ah nice, my bro uses those :D

I can´t thank you enough for helping us rookies in parkour by uploading these tutorials. You know, I have had a lot of trouble with this passe muraille. I looked for many tutorials on this but they didn´t mention anything about how to put the hands after you pull up your body. They didn´t even say anything about strength training for parkour. I guess they think everyone has the strength to pull up easily. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this. Keep helping us!
