  • Talking about real music

  • Check out mattromeromusic for good original pop

  • One of the reasons that music today isn't what it was is look at putting together a room full of musicians with all those instruments is hard to justify when everything can be done on computers and there isnt money to pay that many guys. Its the short end of the stick for sure if you like real music out of REAL INSTRUMENTS! Check out our Band Quantum Groove on Reverbnation to hear our songs, we also have a few vids up. We have a Bari Sax, Trombone and Trumpet in our band.

  • so dig this song! just saw a band do this fused with neil young's cinnamon girl. it is a crazy great arrangement. u gotta ck it out.

    search

    cinnamon doll nutty

  • Can someone explain to me how in the hell we managed to go from this to the idiotic mainstream music we have now?

  • @AngelRamirezOrozco One simple word.... GREED!! :(

  • Duke Ellington = Jazz Swagg

  • I'm actually learning this tune on my saxophone. If I happen to get 50 likes, I will cover it, improvise and all.

  • maravilhoso q pena que banda assim tranquila vc naum acha hj em dia

    perfeito

  • This clip is actually originally in color.

  • Jazz? Man, if you gotta ask you'll never know what it is! - Louis Armstrong

  • Six people have no Satin Doll of their own.

  • Lov the song, lov Duke, we miss you.!!!

  • What year is this?

  • My Dad met him. Love this tune.

  • 5 ppl are total idiots!

  • hi

does this clip come from a DVD ?

if yes may i know the name or any link to download it

  • Great version. But just listen to Ellington 'A' train on Ellington Uptpwn sung by Betty Roche fantastic rendition.

  • Every time that I find a Piano- No Matter where it is - I sit down and play this for whomever is around - don't worry about the crowds - I am able to shake them - had lots of practice at that and get away usually without too many claw marks!

  • I take my hat off to you brewsterbud, a fantastic piece to be able to play.

  • may i view ur sample, as you said you play piano....i am a fan of piano players specially jazz music!.

  • Simple tune turned into pure gold.

  • Why did Ellington get the "Duke" nickname and Basie get the "Count" nickname?

Because they impressed others as aristocratic gentlemen.

    My opinion.

  • I don't know for Basie.

Duke got his name because his father worked in a luxury hotel. It's there he got a taste pronounced for beautiful clothing.

So, his friends used to call him "The Duke".

    He's class like his music.

  • Exactly. Duke actually got his in junior high school from other students because of the way he dressed, walked, talked and behaved in general.

  • @fanwuren I had a teacher who knew Basie, and the story he always told was that he was in some sort of music class/lesson/group and he couldn't play a certain rhythm, and the teacher yelled at him "Count, Basie!!!". And of course, my teacher embellished it to the point where it was a 30 minute long story.

I have no clue if it's true, but it sure is funny.

  • What year was this recorded?

  • Nice job pointing out the bassist. Jimmy Blanton, he only with Ben Webster the tenor sax helped the Duke get where he got.

  • The Webster/Blanton version was in the 1940s with Sonny Greer on drums. This obviously has Sam Woodyard along with a lot of the later guys.

And yes that bass does look like there is a lot of funk in it..

  • This bass is "THE BASS". Thanks for the video, it's wonderful.

  • i think everyone noticed the difference between altos and trumpets playing the melody. trumpets have twice the energy

  • What a BEAUTIFUL melody!!

  • booy, has that bass gone through a rough life :)

  • Nice music, I LOVE JAZZ ^-^

  • No one can do this like the Duke

  • Thanks for posting this!!

  • OMG I'M PLAYING THIS IN BAND

    Wonderful

  • this video ended before the song finished what a GYP!!!

  • What a great bass player!

  • this always makes me happy

  • Immense Swing.

    Its so good.

    Very fat tone.

  • This music will live forever! Hail to the Duke!

  • YESSS!!!

  • what 'bout the year of this video ?

  • SLEEK :)

  • brilliant music like this doesn't exist these days. @ least it lives on for future generations

  • I think, with his body of work, he's earned the right to snap his fingers while playing.

  • Maybe on a practice area or something. But when you are actually filming it, no, you do not dance, you play.

  • Duke Ellington, like Thelonius Monk, can what the hell ever they want to do with their songs, whether someone is filming them or not. If the director has a problem someone should remind that fool exactly who is the subject of the film.

  • you'd do a little dance like that too if you're bass player did that without an amp...

  • Not that it matters, I can also live with a little finger snaping.

  • satin dolls my grandma she owns a bar...and i know ur not gonna belive me but she is..

  • Why is he dancing at 2:36?

  • why not?

  • Duke can do whatever the hell he wants

  • Well when was the last time you saw a five year old doing whatever he wants besides in that movie "Big Daddy"?

  • You're going to tell Duke how to play jazz?

  • No he shouldn't, it was someone else's time to shine, besides, you gotta do what you gotta do in a case like that. If you pick your nose or wet your pants when you play jazz, go then heck ahead and do that if it helps!

  • If the Duke wants to snap his fingers, let the man snap his fingers.

  • You're a fool

  • now who's the 5 year old?

  • Directly speaking, no one. But if that's how you are acting, that's what people think. And that's what i think. Now people have failed to tell me why he is dancing and not playing.

  • Well namestook, I am relatively new to Jazz (having only played a few years) but our professor who has been playing for years actually ENCOURAGES us to groove, as long as it isn't distracting to the rest of the show. Whatever helps ya feel the groove. The problem (and one of the biggest challenges I've faced) is relaxing and letting the music move you. Laying back on the beat, and articulating the off-beats. From what I've learned, that is what Jazz is all about!

  • @blackshirtsrule4ever

a song just isnt fun without a personal touch right :P?

  • Cool.

    Thanks!

  • My school band played this. but we played it more faster. [1st Trumpet!!}

  • lol trumpets have such a small part

  • im learning this on drums for my school jazz band, not really my type of music, i listen to metal out of my ass, but its nice, smooth and sounds really good.

  • my choir is performing this next week at our concert. yes, i said choir...there are words to this. i've got a solo and everything...we do it more up-tempo though. its pretty fun! =D

  • This song is very relaxing.

  • Duke will always be the Master... so fine

  • I can`t agree any more!

  • right now i am learning the tenor saxophone, (i am switching from the alto to the tenor) and this is one of my favs, i am learning this song for our middle school jazz band, love it

  • I play Tenor. I'm playing this Tonight in the Jazz Band at a concert.

  • mytoxx- i love how you capitalized His like duke ellington was god or something :P. He is pretty amazing.

  • what year is this from?

  • I fairly new to the bass guitar, but my instructor is teaching me to play this song. I trying to see how it's really done.

  • He is awesome

  • i agree, this is great thankyou very much for posting this awesome video

  • I used to have an ancient record of his, my favorite track on it was a very touching version of Solitude. But this is also very nice.

  • This soothes my soul

  • nice One :D

  • nice One :D

  • Thank-you so much for sharing this extra special treat with us. Cool like this is never seen anymore by anyone.

  • I'm 19 and I luv this song, it's one of my mom's favorites too =)

  • This was my mom favorite song. SJ RIP

  • Love it. The stand-up bass makes it feel like you're walking down the side-walk in the neon lights of the city.

  • I love this song, I play it on Sax xD!

  • Actually, I retract what I just said. Because I just heard Coltrane's So What. That is nice too. But I think not all of these tunes are really noteworthy. You have to know what to listen to. So What and Satin Doll are worth listening to.

  • Now this is worth listening to!!! I was listening to a bunch of Coltrane's stuff and it all sounded like crap, quite frankly. Maybe I'm not listening to the right things, I dunno. But this is nice.

  • Super, super super!! I've been playing this song for years, so great to see all the sound colors Duke and his band add. Duke lives!!

  • There are only two jazzmen in history to approach the greatness of Duke when it comes to writing and arranging. The first is Thelonious Monk and the second is Charles Mingus. If I had to put someone who's almost there, I would choose Horace Silver. This is a beautiful film

  • what about louie armstrong?

  • I was referring to writing and arranging music. I forgot to mention Miles Davis as well. Louis was not a writer-arranger so I left him out. That's not to say I don't love Louis for what he is, a great band leader, great singer, soloist, comedian etc.

  • Very nice performance!

  • I've heard this song before in more of a cool jazz setting with fewer instruments. It was cool then, and it's cool now. Didn't know that Billy Strayhorn was the mind behind the song but I still loved it. And know that I know, I love it more. Cool song!

  • Without a doubt, the greatest composer this country has ever produced. Thank you for posting.

  • the country of EARTH.

  • i agree, earth's greatest composer

  • anybody know of some clips with Blanton on the bass in Ellingtons Orchestra back from the 40´s??

  • Bravo! Standing O!

  • The Real Duke!

  • to appreciate the "Duke" is to appreciate jazz. the beauty of it, the absurdity of it and everything in between.

  • This is ace! Thanks for posting. I always love to see clips of the master in performance.

  • ^^ What is that ^^ Thats Ace
