Brilliantly done. Just been researching the man and his music a little and it's really helpful to see someone ACTUALLY playing it as it sounds. Great job.
You are my teacher!! I was so impressed that I started to learn to play this tune and I finally did it (not good as yours though...)!! Pls check out mine, master!!
Yeh whats with this me264304 guy. This song has got to be one of the hardest songs to cover in relation to timing and this player just about nails it.We'd all love 2 c RJ play and this is the closest its gonna get.Thx 4 posting.
you arent even the beginning of a pimple on the late great robert johnson's ass. you weren't even singing. you overdubbed the vocals later, obviously. who learns songs in their entirety anyway? robert wouldn't have ever played the exact same version as he recorded. what is important is the lyrics and the soul you put into it. don't get lost in copying the detail, play from your heart.
In response, yes he was singing, as I was the one who ran the video equipment that cold morning. As for replicating the song, this is a major accomplishment (that's what a great cover is). And, how would you know that Robert wouldn't have played the song exactly the same twice. I don't think you were around when RJ lived.
It's an open Ab tuning, slightly sharped. The 6th through the 1st strings are: Eb, Ab, Eb, Ab, C, Eb. Thus, from standard tuning, strings 2-4 are tuned up, strings 6, 5 & 1 tuned down.
From there, all the strings need to come up 1/8 of a step. The capo, of course, is placed on the 2nd fret. This tuning will match the tuning Robert Johnson used on the original recording.
I have written a cool Blues song which I play in open Ab tuning. The chords in my blues are Ab, Db and Eb. I am currently perfectioning the guitar solos in my blues. The slide is easy for me. But figuring out where on the fretboard I can solo with my three remaining left hand fingers is difficult. Can you help me? I will soon record my blues song in a record studio, so your help would be most appriciated.
The blues guys all stole from each other, and the idea was not to sound like the last guy, but to put your own imprint on the song, inlcuding many times adding completely different lyrics, chords, fills, etc. "Exact copy" is a product of our digital thinking age, not from the oral, er "aural" folk blues tradition where knowledge passed by ear, not book, or chip. Tonus, as usual succeeds admirably.
Man!, if you could manage to sing it one octave higher, you would knock it out of the park. Love your playing! You've got RJ's guitar playing technique down. It does not sound forced in any way. Evidently, you dedicated a huge amount of work and time on this one.
Thanks Gene, yeah it was a lot of work to learn it all. I'd have to say that Robert Johnson's music is the most intricate and most difficult music I've ever had to learn for the guitar, bar none. Unbelievable playing from an incredible player. Then again, I bet he could play his entire song catalog with his eyes closed.
@tonuslocus12 Thanks so much for really sticking to the spirit of his playing style. So many people want to put thier own spin on it but never really nail his licks. I know young guns that can play Clapton note for note and sound just like him. But I don't know many guitarists who play RJ note for note. You did a great job and I personally know that took some time. Keep it up.
