If your computer doesn't boot, but has 3 long beeps followed by 2 short beeps, your memory isn't fully pushed in - reopen the case and click it in, it takes a small amount of force
@jmagiera Never mind. I managed to get it to work. The RAM was simply not making the connection...had to push it in a little further for it to make a proper connection. So glad it works. Acer runs way faster!!! Thank you for your video and for your help!
@jmagiera No it is not working with the original 1 gb. Did something disconnect to not make my monitor work? Like I said, the unit itself comes on and causes to beep every 40 seconds...but no monitor. The RAM I installed was a Wintec DDR3 1066Mhz 2gb SODMM.
I followed the steps and managed to replace the 1gb RAM to a 2gb RAM...BUT when I inserted the battery and turned the unit on the monitor refused to come on. The notebook turned on but the monitor never did. What could be causing this problem? I would really appreciate someones feedback on this asap. Thanks!
I like the way you protected the screen... How about guarantee? I intend to buy one next month, was wondering how to upgrade the memory, but I'm sure now that 1 Gb is enough for me...
Why do you even bother. Poor video. You sound like a girl, your camera is crap, their is no light cant see what your doing, and you don't even make any sense. don't make videos, find a new hobby.
I bought one a couple of weeks ago. This no longer works. I found the tabs, but Acer requires a tool to depress same simultaneously. Forget about credit cards or box cutter knives. But why the unfriendly customer service? Buy memory from Dell and their Techs will instruct installation over the phone. There is a from-the-bottom repair somewhere on youtube. That Likely works.
go along the 4 tabs and gentle push then up with the knife, DO NOT run it along or do any other suggestion. The tabs should push up and not break at all (I think they are spring loaded. The most important one seems to be the F12 one that will come up enough to pry it open. There are instructions inside that area for the 4 screws and hole to push on after that. also leave the keyboard CONNECTED
Well I tried all methods, including the supposed 'good' method from Gary. This did not work for me, in the end I ended up pushing in one of the pads between the keyboard and the metal plate behind it and the keyboard did not budge. I also tried a credit card and a sharp object along the top to push up the pins and scratched the unit along the top edge. the BEST way and looks like the LEAST damage was to get a cheap bluntish thin kitchen knife (possibly for peeling) the look for the tabs.
You don't need to remove the keys. Nor do you need to jab the back whole. Just press in the tiny tabs above the mentioned keys, and on the left of tab and above Esc.
Ah, and I have Acer ao522 C-60, inserted 4GB-1066mhz sodimm pc-8500 (204 pin) RAM, and ofc after that, disabled virtual memory in windows. Upgraded the win 7 starter with windows anytime upgrade using my other laptop's cdkey (came with w7home) to Win 7 Home Premium, so now I see all 4 GB RAM, drivers are OK, can change desktop pic, etc... Also partitioned the HDD before these, 40GB for c:, rest is D: 8K clustersize, and ofc I left the hidden backup (15G) and system (100M) partition intact...
1. push 4 lash above keyboard toward screen till u hear a tick (I used my fingernail :), maybe apply gentle liftup force on buttons F4 F8 F12 Del till they jump behind the keyb.
2. infront battery pins, press into 4x4mm hole with plastic just enough u can put a credcard under the keyb, lift up center part (can bend some milimeter) and untick keyb from the 2 fixed side latche
3. dont unplug the keyb, use the 4 "1" marked screw, press into the marked hole, backpanel ticks, use crcard...
@henavaan are you sure you got the right kind of RAM? As for your keyboard, did you not follow the instructions by 4554gary, as I annotated in the video?
@henavaan This very nearly happened to mine too. But there are very small tabs. 7 of them to be exact. Which can be pressed in gently then the keyboard flicks out itself. Because I had listened to Gary's advice of "Jab in the hole" it has damaged the back. As you need to use a fair amount of pressure. Stay safe and just press in the 7 tiny tabs with your finger nails. at the left of tab, above esc, above F4.F8.F12 and Del.
Finally found a simple step by step video.... Can't wait to get this done!! Any tips on upgrading the processor? and what which processor would be most suited without straining the actual netbook too much?
Your video was straightforward and easy to follow. My netbook(D257-13473) is running much faster and better than expected. Good luck, best wishes, and THANK YOU. (=
Respond to this video... just upgraded (with shaking hand - nerves), successful!! Real difficult to get keyboard off and caused a little damage to the silver bit at back of keyboard, but still works fine. You dont need to disconnect the keyboard, just work around it, otherwise follow the posts.
I bought just yesterday Acer Aspire One 533. and it's too f***ing slow. when i watch a youtube video sometimes it took 10 to 15 mins. to play. this is insane and I'm so disappointed!
does this have 1 ram slot or 2? i have a 1GB ram lying around somewhere...but i really don't want to go through the trouble of opening it up and find it has 1 slot only. i am reading online and some people are saying 1 slot while others are saying 2.
hi, is the speaker right next to that ram? (as seen near 6:22/8:59)
i seem to have sound only coming from that side.
nothing from the other side near that orange thing.
IS MINE FAULTY?
the bottom of the netbook has a 'grill' that runs across the bottom but i only have sound come from that one side... if your hands were typing or palms resting on the netbook, the sound would only come from under the LEFT palm.
@chootrain29 No, yours is not faulty, the netbook has only one puny little speaker (on the left side when you look at it from the front). I hardly use it.
Actually you don't even need to remove the keys. Just push the latches in, you can see and reach them without removing the keys, and then push against the 4x4 hole under the battery.
@fantiball I actually broke one of my keys (f8) doing in this way. Of course I missed one of the clips on the back putting it back together so I had to do it all over again. This time I didn't remove the keys and I could still undo the clips, so I'd recommend not removing the keys, but still pushing in the latches. Also make sure you use a dull object on the hole as mentioned, as I used a semi-dull pencil and punched a hole through some aluminum foil layer looking layer, all still works though!
step 1 after removing the battery, i used a dull object to press against the keyboard
step 2 i pushed in the F4-latch in using credit-card-1
step 3 the pressure from under the keyboard with the F4-latch pressed in allowed me to shove credit-card-2 between netbook and keyboard left or right the F4key
step 5 i moved c-card 2 towards F7 while pressing F7latch in...then towards F12...and "Del"
@fantiball Except placing the buttons back in their position is REALLY hard. I actually just started with your method and realized you don't really need to remove those buttons. Now I'm stuck with my F4 out of the keyboard and I can't seem to make it fit in again.
I've has so many friends mess up thier new netbook, following the directions here. Please don't remove the keyboard in the manner shown. Pull the battery, look inside, right in front of the battery contacts. You will see a small 4x4 mm hole. That silver you see is the bottom of the keyboard. Simply push the keyboard with a blunt object and the keyboard will push up enough, allowing you to get your fingers underneath, and pull the keyboard up and out.
@jmagiera No problem! Thanks for taking the time and effort to help out others with the original video. And yes, it would be nice if Acer and others would give instructions!
my unit does not have these holes. I try to go from the top with a credit card but as you say, damage is quite possible.

@4554gary Because the silver surface at the bottom of the keyboard is soft I damaged it and also the spring of the F4 key on the other side of it. Fortunately I gave up on this technique while the F4 was still working and could remove the keyboard "normally" as shown in the video without breaking anything - you just need to be patient and careful.
I bought a DDR3 2G on BestBuy.com, but when i tried to install it it wasn't the right one...it actually didn't "fit" (although the site said it was compatible, the slit didn`t match, so it wouldn't fit), I had to return it, then I got another one on Amazon, but the same thing happened. I had to return it, too. I don't know where to get the right one, I never thought it would be that difficult to find it. Help me out here, please! Where can I get it online? Do you have a link to it? Thank you!
Just did this, took 10 minutes start to finish. WAY easier than my old ZG5 Aspire One. Acer even printed directions that you can see when you remove the keyboard.
I just upgraded my Acer Aspire One 522 from 1GB to 2GB. It's not that difficult to get the keyboard up. No scratches or damage here. Just keep your hands steady. The rest is easy just follow the video. Thank you poster. Enjoy!!
sorry, I don't know, the HD is a bit harder to access, you might have to take the whole motherboard out, but just remove the keyboard like I showed and you can measure the HD yourself.
I was fairly disappointed when I booted the 522 the first time and it even took forever to open a frew webpages in the iexplorer. 1gb ram and win7 ... seems to be bullshit, not even surfing the web was fun.
Btw: I did not remove the keyboard-cable because you (me) easily break the connector when opening it. Worked good for me, just have to hold on to the keyboard when you turn the netbook.
You don't need to remove all those screws. Under the keyboard is a pictogram depicting that to remove the bottom cover you need to remove 4 screws, which are also numbered 1-4. Then all you need to do is to push a thin object such as a screwdriver through the hole marked with a pictogram in the bottom right-hand corner in order to remove the bottom cover.

I have found a really easy solution to getting to the ram! It builds up on @4554gary's idea.
1)Remove battery, there's a 4x4mm hole infront of the pins, it's the keyboard
2)Remove keys: F4, F8, F12 and last key by pulling them from top towards you
3)Push the latches, they should stay pushed in
4)Push softly against the 4x4 whole with a dull object
Keyboard should pop up enough for you to use a card or your fingers to remove it
This method won't damage anything and no force required at all

You don't need to remove all those screws. Under the keyboard is a pictogram depicting that to remove the bottom cover you need to remove 4 screws, which are also numbered 1-4. Then all you need to do is to push a thin object such as a screwdriver through the hole marked with a pictogram in the bottom right-hand corner in order to remove the bottom cover.
