They sure don't make them like this anymore. To anyone who played this when it came out - can you honestly say there's a whole lot of games you've enjoyed *as much* since?
While one could argue about matter of opinions. Your opinion is not even substantiated...
Th MT-32 is a fine equipment, but the truth is that WC scores and effects very so much, and some instruments sound so out of place, that it makes for a hard consistent work.
You have wonderful instruments and then some odd ones on the same score. Then you have really good sound effects and some that are laughable at best (Atari 2600 style synthesis)!
Besides the Sound on the Amiga WC really pumps out the adrenaline and immerses on to the atmosphere of the game itself - the MT-32 sounds very artificial on comparison!
Some scores might sound better on the Roland, but on overall the MT-32 is not the best sound experience of WC1 - That glory remains with the Amiga versions (specially the CD32 that added some missing sound effects)!
At least the Amiga got the the best WC, all the rest was downhill for me really. Nice but never the same experience
@hardwiredxs I respectfully disagree, the amiga is very high pitched and has no bass, it sounds like a game boy. MT-32 is much nicer to listen too, its much deeper and has bass.
Well no disrespect for your hearing, but maybe you're comparing with a GameBoy advance ;).
But you actually kinda give me the reasoning - the truth about the audio of MT-32 is that it seems out of place with the game. It sounds more soundtrack solo oriented...
I know that it was the original sound hardware, but I feel the Amiga one is much better.
As for the high pitched, one can only compare on real hw... Because no matter what they say the amiga sounds a lot different...
No matter what hw you have I know that real amigas sound diferent from emulation. Even the A1200 sounds different from an A500.
But like one musician friend mine said once... "It's a 8bit audio hw, but the it sounds better than most 12 bit and some 16 bit ones! It all comes down to the DAC I guess "
As for the MT-32 is a real good piece of hw, I have no doubt - it just does not sound as it should regarding WC... Again it's IMHO. Of course I'm not the only one...
@hardwiredxs I disagree. The Amiga sounds low-fi compared to the MT 32, at least in the music, but also the stereo in the game. There's no comparison. The Amiga sound is nothing but hissing. You can hear the dreadful digital noise. The MT 32 sounds far more orchestral, as it was meant. Now, as for the sound effects - I don't know.
This game was great, but Wing Commander II was the best one. I watched the movie recently it was actually not to bad. They really ought to make this into a show ala BG style... but only if they follow the original Origin plotline. That's what made all Origin's games cool, Wings, Strike Commander and Wing Commander.. Because the graphics weren't all that good, the story had to really involve you. Sorta the same tack LucasArts used. That's what's wrong with games today, COD exception
Remember playing this on my A500+ on Christmas Day in 1992. Loved everything about it, even the Origin intro with the orchestra which has stuck in my head for years.
Wow no way you stared at the those graphics for 5 hours. Something about those old bit graphics hurt my eyes so bad after staring at them for so long.
It really is fantastic, I guess the only missing feature is the dialogue dubbed by professional actors that was present in the Sega CD version; with that addition it would have been the best Amiga game.
Damn it. Sorry for repeated missions, I figured out why. VirtualDubs auto apend avi decided it knew the file sequence for some files (so I ended up re-adding what it auto attached.) It caught me out already test recording Secret Missions 1.
That was a very good longplay to a very good game, however, it must be noted that you need to be more careful with your editing. Multiple times throughout the video, missions that you completed already were deplayed all over again. Just thought you'd like to know.
I spent hours on this game. What was really fun was the fact, that the campaing could go different ways depending on how you played, and certain characters could be killed.
REALLY better than the Amiga classic edition. One of the few games that tried to take advantage of CD32 features. It was in a bundle with Dangerous Streets, a very bad fighting game...
Fantastic longplay. Thanks.
