@aaronalwines Correct it is not necessarily his forte, but he still does it as a tribute to his idols, and it is still very good. Very few drummers would even attempt a different style in a live performance, because most of them would not take that risk, or could not pull it off. That being said, he is the best ROCK drummer to ever live!! Neil thunders away at his kit, something jazz musicians could only dream about, but with accuracy 2nd to none.
Neil Peart is a brilliant drummer. I have a lot of admiration for someone who after the career he's had up and says: Ya know, I think I'm gonna change my style. And goes back to school to re-learn his instrument. And I think he does a great job of doing the Buddy Rich parts at the end. Not as easy as he makes it look! :)
NP is superb....I like how towards the end of the solo he went into big band playing...Something tells me he did it as an honor to Buddy Rich....They guys has a zillion drums on his kit and he knows how to use them all......great stuff
Wha wha WHAT!!!!!!!???? D: Here I am watching Letterman, and find out about Drum Solo Week . . . and its "II", I go here and . . . NEIL FUCKING PEART WAS ON LETTERMAN!!!!!!????? I mean, I saw Rush get their Star on the Walk of Fame, seen every Concert since Signals . . . and I MISSED this in JUNE!!!? WaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! D': THANK YOU sooooo much for loading this :D!!! (okay, I'm okay now :p).
FINALLY!!! I found a video of this performance where people are being NICE!!! Most of the other videos of this, people are being jerks. Neil is probably my BIGGEST influence. He totally changed my approach to drumming, and I'm a fan of everything he does on the drums, and lyrically. I agree with TheAntihero6212 !! This set is THE most amazing looking drum set in history. There's a great video tour of it somewhere here on YouTube. Check it out!! The detail is mind blowing!
Thought he was the best rock drummer 35 years ago, and have yet to find any reason to change my mind. A technical marvel, whose playing is soulful and varied. Plus, he's a helluva nice guy, just like his bandmates. Sure, he might not be Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa but I doubt they could've played prog metal perfectly either.
Neal Peart has the greatest drum kit in the history of the world. Case closed. I would go to a Rush show just to watch him drum. Great Lyricist, too. People forget that he wrote the lyrics to every single great Rush song with the exception of "Working Man", which he wasn't in the band back then; John Rutsey was their original drummer.
@indigenous4logic I've always been a big Rush fan. NP has always been a huge inspiration. One of a kind and in my top 5 favorite drummers, all tied for 1st.
P.S. I happen to think he IS a fantastic jazz drummer, too. Rush just doesn't play it. In this clip I think he's actually playing over a recording of jazz which makes it extremely difficult to do, especially when it shifts out of his tribal pounding section. This is a rushed, no pun intended, drum solo due to time constraints so he really crams a lot in in so short of time. My only disappointment is that there's a sound issue as you can't hear the drums as clearly as usual.
@actionadventures It's funny you say that, I was just watching this for the umpteenth time, and I'm really amazed by Neil's perfect timing with the jazz recording (Not sure if the The CBS Orchestra was doing that Live, I think so though, they played Live with Sheila E). Again, I agree with you about the crammed performance and the sound, they should have upped his mic, even the applause drawn him out.
@indigenous4logic You know, I kept wondering When they would pan to the orchestra because normally that's the case; however, I began to think that that sort of playing, even for professionals would need to be rehearsed a bit and it's very complicated to get timed just right in that sort of solo. He plays that same jazz number in a LIVE version I have and now I wonder if it's just a standard recording that he uses. I could be wrong and maybe he hired a Brazilian orchestra for That concert.
@indigenous4logic This is pretty much the same solo that Neil plays live (although it's a bit longer live). The pre-recorded jazz piece is the same from the live shows so I'm assuming it's not the CBS Orchestra playing with him. He hits all of those triggers for the music himself too.
@indigenous4logic From what I understand, and someone may have replied to this, but Neil triggers the horns, etc., with his feet and on some of those funky cymbals.
...All of you pseudo-intellectual critics ought to just shut the fuck up. Until you have achieved the body of work Neil has, please keep your retarded, ill-informed, baseless, misguided, cretinous, vapid statements and opinions about his drumming to yourselves. The reality is, Neil Peart is in this video clip - and you're jerking off behind a keyboard.
Sorry for his fans but the best of him is behind him, it is not in shape anymore. He play the same chops since 80's. About the final with Jazz Big Band track he should not play in this area. Very big drum set for small performance.
@baloo128 I don't know about that. he is certainly a differnt drummer than he was. Whether it's "better" or not is subjective. However, it's still 'him'. "The Main monkey Business" from the last album was certainly one of his more inventive parts. Personally, I can do without the electronic peices he's been doing the past couple of tours, but again, I'm not going to say that he's done or that he's not in good shape.

You people praising this guy go way overboard. He's nothing compared to drummers like Carl Palmer, Dennis Chambers, Chris Coleman.

Just so you all know Neil uses triggers to make the orchestra sounds, its not a recording.
