@Nevistrix do you actually read the words at the beginning. Besides, its not that wow can't make higher quality cinematics. The whole idea of wow is that it can be played on any computer with a graphics card.
@drcool41 i think i should clarify what i said: I have watched many of the VFS videos made from students and i just posted this comment here after viewing such fantasic visual preformances.
this is awesome haha. Rise of Legends is a jewel of this decade of RTS's, and will rise again. It's intro rivals that of blizzard in quality.. beautiful job.
We don't have any concrete plans right now, but keep watching this page for updated news.
We would recommend you speak to one of our Admissions Advisors to discuss all the financial options available to you. Just fill in the form at vfs(dot)com/startnow and someone will get back to you.
Very very good ability shown here, while I do not agree with the choice (mainly the sounds the scorpions made) I definatly I am surprised and awed by the talent you've shown. I am utterly amazed and I look forward to seeing future work. Six out of three stars.
You should be very proud of your work. And the understanding that you've gained through this process. I like how you can explain your work as well as take feedback so well. You seem like the kind of person people would like to hire in the biz. Keep it up and best of luck to you. You're definitely a good credit to your school.
Thanks. The Wilhelm is quite an audio cliché, but Bob liked it and said it fit well there, so I kept it. In regards to time line, we get about 4-5 weeks from the start until the instructor panel, and about a week later we have an industry panel where guys from various post studios and game audio teams review them.
(continued from previous comment) It's a lot longer than people get in the real world to do a piece like this. But it's great for students because it allows time to constantly tweak it and improve it based on all the helpful feedback received from meetings with VFS instructors (most of whom are also currently working industry pros) throughout the process. All in all, a very valuable learning experience, and a great end result. And as the VFS slogan says, results matter.
Yeah that was one thing I look back on now and wish I had done differently. The reason I went with a grunting sound was because they have no mouth. So I posed that, if they had a voice, it would be muffled and inarticulate. In retrospect, I think a big, menacing, gritty/crackly monster voice with an IR verb effect that made it sound like it was inside some sort of trunk would've been better. Then the psychoacoustic impact would be that there's a mouth somewhere underneath a layer or rock armor.
A lot of the sounds were terrific. I only question a few things... I agree with envoy3, the squashing sound didn't work. Something about the crumbling noises of the earth/ rock/ clay creatures sounded kind of light weight same for when the man kicked what looked to be a heavy metal lid of some sort over. It seems the lid should have had a heavier sound. All in all You kept me engrossed and your sounds were pretty belivable. Good job.
Thanks for the feedback. I just listened to this video and realized it was not my final 2.1 mix. My final mix was heavier, thicker, punchier, and had a few other little changes. I think the final 2.1 mix on my website at deifiedaudio[dot]com (it's on my portfolio/animation page, and also on my leveleyed youtube channel) comes across much better. Please check it out and let me know if you can hear the difference, and whether or not I managed to fix the "light weight" issues.
I think the main problem with this mix is that it was originally mixed in 5.1, and I didn't remix it for 2.1 (desktop speakers with a sub). I just used default film settings for the Dolby Surround encoder to downmix it, and the LFE channel didn't come through loud enough. I made a few other changes as well (adding minus 1 octave pitch shift to the evil genie's voice, and some other little things).
so many people think VFS made this trailer XD, and they dont even know its for a game =p and yet, i loved this game, would pwn if they do a sequel of that game with the engine of CoH..
True, but I didn't want to take the "2001" approach on a piece like this, and the instructors agreed with me on that. If you want to see a realistic sounding space movie, see 2001: A Space Odyessy. If you want to see a space movie that sounds good, see something else.
That was awesome. If you read the description, the visual media is not from the school, its Microsoft's. The guy from the school only did the sound and stuff. But anyway it's awesome
This is the best film i have seen so far from VFS. I really hope that this gets filmed into a movie and if it's a game i'll buy it. This is seriously the best of VFS
This seems very similar to those Blizzard reels to introduce the story behind Starcraft and Diablo II, but better. Maybe a videogame could be built on top of this.
Somehow, this reminds me very much of the third Lord of the Rings film;specifically the scenes involving the defence of the human city of Minas Tirith.
also worth noting from reading the other comments: don't the other commentors realize that the visuals were not created at VFS? Seems like a lot of them think they were.
good soundscape. Back in the day, I probably watched that Rise of Legends intro more than I actually played the game so I could tell just how different this one sounded. Its too bad the game turned out to be such a disappointment in the long run considering how awesome Rise of Nations was.
remarkable, that was really good. if only i could do this. they should make more following the storyline of this, in my opinion its some of the best ive seen from vfs. amazing.
Wow,the details, visuals and rendering of the film is fantastic. The music came in at the right moment too.The style and feel of this film is suited for that of a game.Vancouver's got some raw talent.
