Thanks for the video, sir! Left hand pizz is much easier than I imagined it to be. I started music on guitar and bass (and do a lot of tapping and such), so this technique comes very naturally now that I've seen it done. :)
I was at an orchestra performance and I was very suprised when the violins stopped and started playing pizz. notes for about 30 seconds. I didn't know it was ever orchestrated into music like that.
Hi DarkClawish, do you mean Son File' or spun tone (the very slow stroke)? No, I have not done that yet, although I did have a teacher that required it of me. It seems I saw a video of Joseph Gingold talking about it, perhaps in one of his masterclass videos from the 1980's?
@professorV I mean the technique that you can play a note for about 100 times i mean without stoping the bow or when you change the bow direction but when you hear it you cannot notice the change of the bow , its the similar of circular breathing of the wind instruments.
Hi Todd - Is there a consensus of what you should do with your right elbow when doing pizz? For example, if you were doing string crossing pizz would it stay in one place, or would you align your elbow roughly to the equivalent bow level? I've seen players do both but don't know which to aim for myself.
Hi Helen, The right-hand pizz is actually not mentioned in most of my textbooks. I tend to keep the elbow still, creating the motion from either the finger or the hand. As for level, I keep the elbow exactly at the same level as if I were using the bow. I hope that helps!
Thank you very much for your immediate respond... and for your valuable lessons I learned a lot from them.
I really enjoy playing the violin and serious in learning, I even travel across the boarder to another country to take my lessons since we don't have any music institutions where I live.
Hello... I have been watching your videos for a while and they let me realise how hard and long way is awaiting me..First I am 46 years old and I've started my violin lessons in 2007 and quit couple of times one of them was 14 months because of the disappointments ..Now I am back and working hard and wondering will I ever master playing the violin in a satisfying way or shall I expect the opposite?
Yes, there is a risk of injury. It's really important to rest between notes as you build up the strength of the left hand. Best not to be in a hurry with this technique.
hello professor would you mind to tell me the role of the bow in (left hand pizzicato) because i really wanna understand it
specially when i watch Paganini caprice 24 by different violinist i notice that they r doing something with the bow not by the right hand finger in the picking part
@sasa30000 Lots of times in left-hand pizzicati the bow is used to make the pizzicato sound when your fourth finger is down, as it is the better of the two faculties available (bow, or finger -- both right hand).
I sent you a frined invite because I would like to send you a message about an online collaboration. Can you accept the invite so I can send you the message?
gud pm prof V, i have a question my violin string broke[ i's the A string] what brand is that A string in your violin..it's the same thicknes as my A string...went to a store but gave me a diff kind/brabd the one they sold me ..the A string is too thin..i have a very old violin,,i'm afraid it will harm it if I use this less expensive A string..the A string that i broke is thicker kind with a purple color at the end..please help...thank you so much.
It sounds like your broken string was a Thomastik Dominant. The thin string is probably steel. It wouldn't hurt your violin, but will sound different.
your videos have helped me a lot. i've actually shared your channel to a lot of my violinist friends 'cause i think your step by step approach is really great.
i hate the feeling on left hand pizzicato...wow it killed my fingers...

@246trinitrotoluene i guess it's the easiest skill unless u're talking about pizzicato on the G string and 'Arco' on the D string.

not every note in the run is actually plucked. They are using the bow to play a note, then doing left hand pizz for the next run.
