David Lynch's "Dune" differs from the book. That's why many people criticize it but I don't agree. The whole movie was very well done, visual effects were great for that time and the acting was brilliant. Kyle MacLachlan and Francesca Annis were stunning
Dune was never meant to be a single film. The book itself is split into 3 sections, therefore wouldn't it be logical to do 3 films??? You can't take a book with so many characters and so much dialogue and condense it down to a 2 or even 3 hour film. The Harry Potter series has tried to do this, mostly with disappointing results. Give Dune the film treatment it deserves and needs.
@UlrichTheOmega I agree, but 2 films seem more reasonable, I can only imagine the first movie's climax be the Sardaukar invasion and then the rest has time developing Paul's character properly with longer battle scenes.
It's funny to see Lynch himself do a cameo and he does despise this movie so much he disowned it. I can't wait for a new Dune movie. But i think the book is brilliant and influenced many movies for years such as Star Wars, Star Trek movies, Avatar, Nausicaa and many more.
Always loved that harvester character, he seemed so totally authentic, and I never knew it was David Lynch. The character's pretty cool too, and David did a good job with the acting. Great scene!! And they aren't yelling "Run to the choppa!" but instead Duke Leto is yelling "Two men in each of the spotters! You over here!(?) Run! Run!"
They should have named it Doom because this flick was doomed from the start - 20 different ways. Still, they managed to pull out a few good scenes. And I agree, having Patrick Stewart on the job never hurts.
@ancalites Now now, i thought this was a pretty good movie, though the made for tv miniseries was more accurate to the book i felt this one brought david lynch's distinct style to the dune universe and had the star power to back it up. Just because it was a box office flop dopesn't mean it was a bad movie, why do you think it was a bad movie personally?
The movie wasn't that bad really. I just wanted to say something cool about Patrick Steward :p
Honestly, though, while I thought the sets and costumes were terrific (especially the stillsuits), I just thought there was something off about the whole thing. It didn't quite gel together right for me compared to the book. Dune just strikes me as one of those stories that is essentially unfilmable.
@decayedmatter I think this version of Dune was the greatest ever. I've always loved this movie, unsure why other people claim it's no good. The miniseries I hated with a passion.
The Dune miniseries had too much mechanical-looking technology. Part of the magic of the Duniverse is that it's insanely advanced technology with a renaissance flair that obscures it behind extravagant architecture and decorum.
Also David Lynch's sandworms are THE interpretation that influenced all later interpretations.
It's good for a Lynch movie but bad as a Dune movie, audiences were pissed they had to read those silly pamphlets they were handed in theaters for audiences go to the movies to escape research and literacy.
@decayedmatter Too much people hate this movie, just leave it as that, I always found this to be a masterpiece, only a cult audience could agree though
@decayedmatter - It flopped because on-set spies told George about some of the Dune plot, so he tacked it onto his on Star make-it-so-everyone-is-spoon-fed-the-plot Wars and then rushed production to beat Dune make-everyone-use-their-brain to the box office. Dune is a very good movie, great cast and not bad effects for it's time, good soundtrack too. Frankly I don't think a hell of a lot of people who say that this movie is straight up bad (infact I put it down to a lack of imagination)
I guess it's just a matter of high rated movies being the ones that please a wider audience. Many of the best films (to my taste) are unusual or niche films which don't always score well when ranked democratically.
Fuck, I never noticed that was Lynch! good eye! Wow......

I'm just glad he wasn't trying to pull the Gordon Cole routine in this scene. Dune rules. One of my favorite movies.

This film is proof that no matter how bad the movie, it's always worth watching if Patrick Stewart is in it.
