  • Fucking wow!

  • I LOVE ELAINE AND PATTIS VOICE

  • So brilliant!!!

  • She scoops too much.

  • She's fabulous...and she knows it.

  • Lapone doesnt get this song at all...there is no feeling in the words at all...this is a song about tragic women..and she doesnt put that across.... this song wasn never meant to be belted. This is a bad interpretation.

  • @MPL029 You are so off the mark that I can't even take your comment seriously. Perhaps you have some hangups about LuPone which won't allow you to fully accept what she is giving. This is a wonderful interpretation. Elaine's reaction says it all.

  • @RamajX I have to smile at your camment.....First of all..Stritch is the consummate professional so of course she will act cordially about an interpretation about her signature song. 2nd..I have nothing against Lupone..I have worked with her on Bway and even spent 2 Thanksgivings at her home with her and husband MAtt...andwhen I asked her about this she said to me "what the hell was I thinking"...Like you said it is a wonderful interpretaition..but wrong for this song..even LuPone said so...

  • @MPL029 This is not a "bad" interpretation, it's ANOTHER interpretation. It's a different singer, a different time, and a different attitude altogether. I liked it--it's more snarky than tragic, and out of context from the show, it makes for an interesting song rather than "scream."

  • Yes, Patti obviously actually has a singing voice and can sing the song, but to me Elaine, lived this reality and knew this world very well when she originated the role. The culture has changed dramatically since this song was written, and, to me, it just seems like the younger performers who mount this song,do it with standard issue emotions, not really understanding the subtext of the time and place and the very boozy culture it came from..Sorry, Elaine Stritch OWNS this song.

  • I've never been a big fan of Patti LuPone -- I've always thought she oversells her songs -- but she does as superb a job on this song as I've ever heard, even including that of the peerless Elaine Stritch (who "owns" the song and who was obviously impressed, judging from her reaction in the video).

  • @Broadway King15 - she isn't portraying a character; it's a benefit performance. Her line & timing about wearing a hat & slowly pans to look @ Stritch is priceless!!

  • @judebarnes4 as if that wasnt planned.....

  • Totally agree. For a good punch, one always either defends, or turns on, the rest of the pack.

  • Patti sings everything the same IMO.....Like Patti Lupone the diva, instead of the character's she's supposed to portray.

  • @BroadwayKing15 No she doesn't. I saw her in Gypsy and her acting and singing was flawless. You're the actor, and you should act the character and make it your own, not try to change your voice and be someone else. Also, I'm not sure if you noticed, but this section was called the DIVAS in red

  • Actually, she could have turned around & performed the number to the "ladies" on stage with her!!

  • FINALLY!! To hear someone actually SING this song, instead of yelling it!! And, Patti is the ONLY one with enough balls to do it with Stritch sitting right there. Secondly, this song is NOT about bitterness & sadness. It's about bitchy sarcasm for these "dinosaurs"!! Go to a lady's luncheon (Yes, they still have them!!!) in NYC, Beverly Hills, SF, Dallas, DC or Atlanta & you will see exactly what she's singing about; their fittings, their galas, their openings, their trainers.

  • @judebarnes4 I would have to disagree about the song not being about bitterness and sadness to sum extent. Sub-textually the song references the meaningless lives of house wives and how shes not one of them, but then realizing that she also leads a meaningless life as well. "Everybody diesssssss"

  • @judebarnes4 Haven't heard Debra Monk's version, huh?

  • @judebarnes4 Thanks. Though I can't help but tell you your explanation itself felt "yelled." Btw, if anything, Patti had the "eggs" to sing it w Elaine sitting there, not the "balls" (it's a human anatomy thing). Thx, tho.

  • @judebarnes4

Are you dissing Elaine Stritch? You've got to be kidding. And I agree with the earlier post--it's more than bitchyness. You can't see that? Look/listen to the end. For that matter, check out the incredible documentary on hear about the soundtrack recording with Sondheim not satisfied. Also, Patti tends to bellow too much. Sorry, just is.

  • @judebarnes4 Plenty of folks have the balls to do it to Elaine's face. Personally, the opportunity alone would be incentive enough for me. And plenty of folks sing it. Carol Burnett has an amazing version--not the one in Putting It Together; it's earlier than that. There's a video of a high school production. That girl has some pipes.

And besides that--this song is endlessly adaptable. You can yell it and it loses none of its acid fun.

  • Ive seen many different women interpret this song..but I think this may be the worst. Its too studied and thought out. Shes not giving us any reason to pity these women and thats what this song is about...their loneliness and desperation...

  • Look at all those living legends---and wow, Patti nails it.

  • @donaldcallen Walsh is my favorite, she blew me out of the water

  • For all u haters she's AMAZING has won Tonys been in many broadway plays such as Evita Anything Goes and Gypsy and she is an amazing singer.

  • How is she so well known? She's AWFUL

  • @uknowwho889 thats actually how the song is suppose to sound

  • @sweeney60 she lacks all the subtlety and bitterness that this song should have, everything she does is over the top and self-indulgent! This is true of everything she's ever done, she's just plain awful!

  • @uknowwho889 but the character shes singing is a very self-indulgent character. I think her bitchy attitude that shes famous for is well utilized in this song.

  • When she hugged Elaine I cried.....not because of the performance, but I'm sure because it brought up so many memories for Strich and we can all sympathize with her when I say that. We all have songs that bring up memories for us, ESPECIALLY in theatre. :)

  • I love how Patti acts like she's trying to shame Elaine Stritch, the original singer of the song, as a joke. And I love how Stritch embraces Lupone. Those two ladies admire each other.

  • Not a bad performance, but this lacks the bitterness and sorrow that this song demands. Patti's got a great voice but she is not taking it as seriously as she needs to. Check out Stritch's or Walsh's to see what I mean.

  • @ThePhantom135 While there is acting going on, this is a concert where they are celebrating Sondheim. That might attribute to what she's holding back. She might ahve felt bitterness was out of place for this occasion. Though, more sadness would be appriopriate.

  • If I ever sang Ladies who Lunch and Elaine Stritch congratulated me afterward I would die. just die. that would be the biggest honour right there. #dead

  • what is that mahler thing that the trumpet plays when she says "and one for mahler!" ??

  • @nagyesszep Mahler was famous for using the line the trumpet played. In almost every symphony of his, he uses that line or something similar to that.

  • If the torch had to be passed from Elaine to anyone on this number it should be Patti - who commands the song as evidenced by Elaine's reaction. True class these ladies are!

  • I think this is the first song that I actually like her voice on. Don't get me wrong, I respect Patti LuPone as a ridiculously talented Broadway diva, but I've never really LIKED her voice. She always just scares the hell outta me, but this song was kinda perfect for her.

  • @Clara19987 Couldn't have said it better myself!

  • @grai ridiculous. At the end of the number, Stritch gives LuPone a standing ovation. Lupone's version is similar in tone to Stritch's, only she belts more. After all, she IS Patti Lupone.

  • i feel sorry for elaine stritch. here so was the original actress, and shes just sitting there, looks so sad

  • @aaronmichael22 thats exactly what I thought - its looks like its killing her! why did she not singing it? Lapone is great but Stritch was the one who created the role...seems strange...

maybe Stritch is not looking sad but is actually pissed off so she's keeping a str8 face and not acknowledging anything

  • Bloody brilliant.

  • 1:09 donna LOVE IT

  • @DPaulThib93 Lol donna's just cracking up even though they've probably rehearsed the wholee thing before xD oh donna, you goof.

    And oh Patti, you goddess.

  • which concert is this??

  • Please upload "Too Many Mornings" with Nathan Gunn and Audra McDonald

  • technically amazing. classic patti lupone. however, i'm not a big fan of her interpretation of the song. she didn't really convey the kind of masked hurt that you feel in the elaine stritch or even barbara walsh versions. instead, she kinda played up the bossa nova rhythm in the song, which made it feel more playful than anything else. patti, you have a fantastic voice, but i think i'm gonna stick with ms. stritch's version.

  • @manonfire1601 This was just a concert. I don't think she was trying to convey the complete character. Just some of it, and showcasing her voice with the song.

  • Sometimes she overdoes it

  • i'm not the biggest patti lupone fan...but i have to say this is one of the best performances I've ever seen/heard

  • PLEASE UPLOAD THE OTHERS! :)

  • I just got the DVD on Amazon BECAUSE you posted this! I got tired of bringing the volume up and down! From personal experience shes a bitch to work with.Perfection is demanded from her! Why not,she gives perfection and it's expected from her,I find no fault hat she demand it from others that work around her! She's one of the greatest talents of our generation! Great in a show with a Broadway cast, and do Carnegie Hall as solo and fill it! . I LOVED WORKING WITH HER!

  • very sorry for the audio/video quality... this was my first attempt at uploading a video that wouldn't get blocked by youtube. i only left it online because so many people were viewing it. you can watch the entire concert in HD via netflix, or purchase the DVD on itunes or amazon.

  • SOUND? I had to turn the volume up on my speakers to max to hear this. But, the sound was still very low. I love Patti!

  • where's the sound?

  • Lol at Bernadette's little ginger dandelion head in the background..

  • Patti LuPone - one of my favorite Broadway actresses singing one of my favorite Sondheim numbers - it really is a gem!

  • This is so great. and backwards! haha! which is fun. the picture i mean.

The best part is Stritch leaping to her feet and loving LuPone so much in that moment.

  • This is so great. and backwards! haha! which is fun. the picture i mean.

  • She does this the best I've seen so far. Proper amount of bitterness, sadness and humor. Great!

  • The theater is a creepy, scary place.

  • What amazes me about this incredible performance,is that she has the balls(and Lupone has balls,I did EVITA with her) to sing it in front of Ms.Stritch!

  • I'll be honest, the first time I heard this song, I didn't really like it. But I keep having to go back to it, and the most I watch, the more I realize how genius Patti Lupone is. Her presence is just phenomenal

    .

  • i'm a huge tennis fan and the thing i enjoy about watching Roger Federer play is that he does not look like he;s even trying to be amazing. and that's why i love Patti. she looks almost bored as she belts out with her unmatched vibrato. she sings so beautifully and does it with such ease. isn't she a gem?

  • Fabulous. Does anyone know if the Philharmonic Company is going to be released on DVD?

  • @hersirensong I hope so!!! I would assume so, but I'm not sure!

  • This is probably the reason why she sang this song in the 2011 production - she nailed it. Her voice works well for the tone of the song, and she's more than strong enough to belt the song out full volume.

  • I only know its mirrored because I realized the "lupone lip" had switched sides on her face.... :)

    SHES FANTASTIC.

  • @ ivmeer1976 You have missed the point of this song and Patti's performance. Joanne is rich not classy, she is caustic, cynical and bitter. She starts this song calling out bored houswives that fritter away their time with meaningless activities and half-way through realizes she is the worst example of such lady. The song has some humor but is mostly an indictment of middle-class ennui. Patti nailed it in this performance and in the recent production of "Company."

  • @danindowntownseatown i HIGHLY disagree. i think she may have been the best part of the WHOLE show. she's HILARIOUS, and if you didn't notice, she got the longest applause BY FAR

  • @ivmeer1976 pattie lupone may have been the best part of the whole show. she was HILARIOUS, and she got the longest applause BY FAR in the theater

  • @ivmeer1976 To be fair, has Patti LuPone ever been subtle in any way?

  • Love how her lips look on "dollars." It's so funny

  • 2 people have been sitting choosing a hat..

  • Patti was amazing

  • where can i fined the rest of this please some one tell me.

  • Who is conducting?

  • @Music3251 it's Paul Gemignani conducting...he has conducted every Sondheim Show since the 70's...it's always Paul Gemignani :)

  • It's available on Netflix.

  • Oh for heaven's sake I want the rest of this concert!!

  • @Lindow Look for Stephen Sondheim's Company with the New York Philharmonic. In theaters June 15th! How exciting is THAT!

  • I would shit my pants if I were singing this song in front of Elaine Stritch! Only Patti would have the guts. Wonderful!!!

  • Patti is my ultimate DIVA and Elaine will always own this song for me BUT....it's really nice to hear someone actually SING this song instead of recite the lyrics. Elaine made such a trademark of it that everyone since has just tried to copy her. Bravo to Patti for making it her own!

  • obsessed with her rendition!!!!

  • @beektur

The video here is mirror imaged because if you don't mirror image videos from this concert, Image Entertainment has it blocked in America. Which is why I didn't post the video of "Could I Leave You" initially. I've now uploaded the video as well, it just has a mirror effect.

  • Eh. You can't "sing" this song...it's more of a "yell."

  • Awww, Elaine makes me so happy :). Great performance from Patti!

  • that hug :)

  • 4:08 omg elaine!!!! that hug is just damn adorable!

  • please less patti and more elaine, donna, marin and bernadette. or for that matter, barbara (walsh).

  • FEARLESS

  • I love it when Patti unhinges her jaw and just lets it rip!

  • I love 2:39 "the besssst" <3

    She is sassy xD

  • how come this could be uploaded but not donna murphy's "leave you?" lupone's expression on murphy's number was priceless. (and how come the video is mirror-imaged?)

  • @beektur for the mirror-imaged, it's for copyright stuff.

  • @beektur it's up, check sidebar.

  • @derdriui the audio-only video? beyond being must-heard, murphy's performance is a must-see!

  • @beektur it's a video of the performance. Just... look at the side bar, it's there.

  • @beektur It's mirrored, so that the automatic copyright protection system doesn't detect it..

  • Awwwwwww! The hug at the end was perfect. I was so worried the first time I saw this that La Stritch would feel...disrespected by Lupone doing a number SHE originated. (sort of like if Menzel sang Don't Cry for Me with Lupone in company; younger and talented, but not the same) However that appears to not be the case. I love both of these women and Patti was UHmazing in this performance.

  • I love her vibrato on "gem" and "them" at 2:19

  • @Merkin4pres64 I'm loving the way she is the first artist to do this song with vibrato!!! At last!!! lol!! :)

  • @fountainchain126 She's not the first. Carol Burnett used vibrato when she sang it, as did Barbara Walsh (a bit).

  • @boynamedalexxx Ok Maybe Carol Burnett, but definitey Barbara Walsh did NOT absolutely NOT use vibrato - she was shockingly bad

  • @fountainchain126 Well, I liked Walsh, but opinions differ, so that's fine. But listen again: she had some vibrato there. Not a ton, no, but it was there. It's not a matter of opinion, because it just is. Whether or not you like it isn't the point, but there was vibrato. And this isn't a song to "sing", and vibrato, while great and all, can get in the way of producing a strong, pure straight tone (which Patti is, obviously, able to do as well).

  • I love Patti, and this is very entertaining, as is anything Patti does. However, this doesn't have the depth it could have. It didn't quite fit with the other women's performances at the Concert, since they were all very powerful and emotional. However, LuPone, could definitely channel the rage and bitterness necessary. I'm sure she'll nail it when she plays Joanne with the NYPhil. I'm so glad it's being filmed, since I've always wanted to see Patti as Joanne.

  • For some reason, I really like this. It's a little goofy, but there's something about that's worth watching. Not a huge LuPone fan, but this is an interesting interpretation.

  • "The Ladies Who Rug Munch"

  • This is now my all time FAVORITE rendition. Where can I buy the dvd? She had my approval but when Elaine hugged her, that sealed the DEAL!

  • Elaine Stritch @ :57 is ADORABLE!
