Forgive my bathos, but as soon as this wonderful reading ended I sighed and remembered these were the words of an insurance salesman! I suppose most geniuses have earned their daily bread by less than romantic means but still, amazing that he nurtured and maintained such poetic power and nimbleness in the midst of selling policies for Cadillacs or whatever. Thanks sweetie. Yes I love that line too. Stevens is my fav poet, and this is my fav poem, of the moment. Has a Shakespearean intensity of line - sometimes have to read it several times, meanings are so densely packed. Don't you just love him twirling his cane with straw boater a la Charlie Chaplin?
