PP and M were overcome by the late 60s tsunami of rock and other talented singer song writers - they were 'square' in the late 60s - loved by the older hippies.
Still the song was and is fun and they were talented for sure ...
i tell you the best part about this whole thing is watching mary rock out to her performances..... it is absolutely epic. mary brought so much joy to the concerts.

@calihartley2010 aww, c'mon if its any consolation..i would have stuck my tongue up her rank butt hole when she was a fat jabba looking bitch with a cane...out of respect
Musicality of the group was just out of the world. The major chord harmony Mary make at 0:58 melts me every time. I was a big fan of PP&M at age 18, and still am at age 64. Thanks for posting this lovely clip.
@whotookaegir after the beatles verse there is a bit that sounds like something out of Strawberry Fields Forever. I'm a beatle guy but i found it amusing. Even if it was satirical it was done in a light hearted way.
"lay it between the lines"?!? Please. They may as well have titled this song "We Really Despise Groups That Make Money Than Us Singing Rock and Roll Music"!
i wonder if there's a better example of a group of singers enjoying themselves? i truly can't think of any. the harmonies here are out of this world and pp&m look terrific. i've always had a soft spot for folk songs, and it's even better if it's folk/rock and the best exponents of it are this brilliantly talented trio. they had five decades of giving us musical pleasure. rip mary travers,i'm not alone when i say you are very sadly missed. god bless.
It doesn't come through as well on a live version like this, but on the original studio recording, their Mamas & Papas imitation was flawless. I've talked to many people over the years who thought the Mamas & Papas were the ones that did this song.
I Love this video, and I Love the fact that they had a ball with this song! It's great to see Mary dance around and act so carefree! Who cares what the critics say about what this song did or didn't say, they were having fun, it truely shows in the video. In the time when folk was being pushed aside by other types of music, the message had probaby been "Blowing In The WInd" somewhere anyway. Long Live Peter Paul And Mary!!!!
I think this song was one that makes most hardcore fans of Peter, Paul, and Mary cringe a little, but time has caused me to make my peace with this hit single. I never saw it as a "satire" of rock music, but as hommages to three artists that they befriended and respected (Beatles, Donovan, and Mamas & Papas). I still can't say truly whether or not my love Mary Travers was a great singer or not, but she just poured herself into every song she ever sang, and she sure was easy on the eyes!
One reason MIGHT be that the user who uploaded this didn't put Peter Paul & Mary in the description, as tags. I searched for this song (with artist name included), and this didn't come up. He might've done that to try to avoid the sensors that will flag it as copyrighted, especially if they've deleted other clips he put up (doesn't always work, though).
ppm is real talent...real treasure, w/ raw technology on those times, less audio-video effects, ,. dey only had their natural gift of voices,,pure, innate wonders..just the best of all times..ppm is real legend..
Sorry proken58, the lyrics "lay it between the line" does not refer to coke use, it refers to having to write song lyrics in somewhat hidden messages so the confining restrictions of the FCC back then wouldn't "catch on", which was probably unnecessary, after all most of them were bureaucratic stiffs who didn't know what lyrics meant.
Often times company execs and agents had "dirt" on the radio biz which often lent itself to useful bribery or extortion to get airplay from uncooperative stations or air personalities. Oh yes, I used to be a DJ!! I've met Paul Stookey, of Peter, Paul & Mary notoriety, I've asked him all the questions about their songs, and your reference is hardly true. Wanna know about Puff The Magic Dragon???
Grew up with these folks and this was a very big song in 1967 played the air waves ALL the time you could turn on any AM radio station and it was playing ...and Mary was really very hot just watch her do her thing on here I had a chance to see her live in Athens,Ohio at the OU campus in 1971 at the Folk Festival
I have loved this song since I was a little girl..Thanks so much for this video. Rest in Peace, Mary, and Bless you Peter & Paul in your sorrow, along with Mary's family
to sierra8186 you did not hear the song is i dig rock and roll music. you are probably too young to remember. in the 60,s when a song said something we loved it. rock folk country. vietnam was an awful thing.
nilsdrew - I was a BIT young - born in '65, but I read an article that said this song was indeed meant to polk fun at rock & roll. I grew up with 70's and 80's music, but there was certainly plenty of music from the 60's and I enjoy that as much as any. I know the history of the 60;s as well; anyway, check it out when you get the chance - they were a great group and this is an awesome tune, but I am 99% sure this was meant to "make light" of rock and / or the groups of the 60's and the lyrics.
I never knew that this song is actually poking fun at rock & roll - but now it is clear that they were truly pure folk singers and did not care for rock at all! Still, great tune and well done live - and RIP Mary!
I agree. PP&M could play anything. Another of their pop hits was "Leaving On a Jet Plane," which turned out to be their only No. 1 single on the Billboard pop chart.

@TeamHeavySuck ...the middle lyrics are:
I dig Donovan in a dream-like, tripped out way
His crystal images tell you 'bout a brighter day
And when the Beatles tell you
They've got a word "love" to sell you
They mean exactly what they say
