@harajukugirlloveandG Your right, he said that if he knew he would have lived long, he would have taken better care of himself. Probably the same even holds true with his playing career. He was still a beast.
Mickey Mantle was my idol as a boy, things have been said about him but which one of us is perfect not Babe Ruth not Willie Mays not Pete Rose and the horse shit Barry Bonds and the steroid users of today.Mickey could have been the GRESTEST player ever if he played on 2 good knees. Joe Di Maggio caused Mickey to get hurt in 51 and he is the biggest piece of shit of a man. Love you Mick
@VegoFresh1986 Because the yankees Hate mickey and the rest of the old guys maybe because they are better than this new crew they have had since 90s!!!!!!
The Babe, the Iron Horse, Joltin Joe and the Mick.
There will never be players like that again. Now the Yankee stadium's gone and Steinbrenner's dead. Over on the Dodgers side, Torre's gone, Mannywood is just a sad memory of what might have been, and the new owners try to sell the stadium every two minutes. Neither team made the series this year, either. Yeesh!
It used to be tradition that when Yankees gave their "farewell" speeches, they do it in their Yankee uniforms. But Mickey chose not to. One reason is that this was a Saturday afternoon NBC Game of the Week and in 1969, Mantle was on the broadcast team (with Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek) that season. So he probably didn't want to do a quick change into his suit. NBC dropped Mickey from their team after the '69 season.
@MrJonnyleft i'am tired of hearing that shit did'nt take care of himself has everybody forgot the injeries, that shit has been said so much that is all people say look at his stat's they are as good as the guy that they say is the greatest center feilder of all time may's..........
@tributevocalist , Yes, you saw that right! That was one of the old Yankee Stadium dimensions. You should check out the old left-center field dimensions.
Color footage from the original Yankee Stadium (before the 1975 renovation) is very rare. I wish I could watch a rebroadcast of a Yankees game from about 1970 or so.
NO! You really want to see a game from 1960 thru 1964...those were the great teams!!! Mickey, Roger Maris, Moose, Boyer, Bobby Richardson, Kubek, Elston Howard, Yogi, Whitey Ford, Jim Coates, Dale Long, Johnny Blanchard, Hector Lopez, Bob Turley, Ralph Terry....you can get Wotld Series highlights from then on eBay..pretty kool!!
You are correct, but those teams are well documented, and usually footage is in black and white. I'm too young to remember the old stadium (I was 7 when the 1976 reopening occurred) The old stadium only seems to live on in black and white. I wish i could watch a rebroadcast in living color of the old stadium during forgotten years of the CBS ownership. That intrigues me the most.
to ekimfloom I know it's not exactly what you're referring to but I did see the Mick hit a right handed shot in an old timer's game at Shea in the late '70's.
Mel Allen is 'terribly priviledged"? i hate the Yanks but I swear that in an Old Timers game Mickey batting right handed knocked one into the left field bleachers and Mel Alen doing the play by play shouted 'there goes #537"....any Yankmee fuckers out there remember that one or have the vid to up load????
I wouldn't be proud of doing something like that. If you're making anything off the Mantle fakes I'd suggest you donate it to The Mickey Mantle Foundation, where at least something good can come out of it.
i waited in line for two hours to get an autograph of the Mick in Niagara Falls, NY. I wanted to give it to my father as a gift. I got it, but was too afraid to say anything to him. great ballplayer and an american icon.
So many people forgotten about the Bill Mazorouski Home-run that whip the tar out of the Yankees at "Forbes Field" in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Pittsburgh Pirates whip the pinstropes out of the Yankees.

In my mind that is the most important homerun in the history of the Yankee Stadium. I was only 4 at the time & don't recall it well, but anyone who followed the Yanks during their glory years would tell you that the period from 1965 through 1975 was pure agony. For that agony to end on a first-pitch walk-off homerun in the deciding game of the ALCS was the team's pivotal moment of the 70's. Everytime I watch a highlight of Chambliss whipping the bat around and the ball soaring I get chills.
Last post here as this clip brings tears to my eyes beginning with that beautiful introduction by the Legendary Voice of the New York Yankees." Mel Allen was the best ever. A crisp, clear, clean, happy , knowledgeable voice with his sweet Alabama accent Those were the days! Thank you Mickey, thank you Mel . You made it fun to be a child during that era. You gave us excitement, and in ways hope too. We even used to emulate Mel at our sandlot games when one of our mates knocked one into the woods.
"The Dodgers" won their first ever World Series over the New York Yankees in the 1955 World Series. It was a happy day for the Borough Of Brooklyn in 1955.
"Who Is A Bum". Brooklyn Dodgers beat the New York Yankees.
Like Bob Costas said in his eulogy of "the Mick" .....we'd run the bases like Mickey with shoulders back, fists down, head down. We'd set-up on the on deck circle like Mickey. We'd crease and wear our caps like Mickey. And every year at the start of every Little League season we'd all plead with our coach on the day uniforms were distributed for the number "7". In our sandlot games in my neighborhood we'd ALL hit, or attempt to hit with every at bat from our opposite side.
I had the good fortune of being born in NYC in the early 50's, playing Little League, going to the "CATHEDRAL of Baseball-Yankee Stadium every summer 6 or 7 times, and watching my team on WPIX, Channel 11. I would leave the dinner table and run to the living room when I heard Mickey was at bat. So many times I heard the also GREAT voice of the Yankees, Mel Allen, make his beautiful play by play calls ..... "that ball is going, going, it is gone! Home run, Mickey Mantle!"
"The Dodgers" won their first ever World Series over the New York Yankees in the 1955 World Series. It was a happy day for the Borough Of Brooklyn in 1955.
"Who Is A Bum". Brooklyn Dodgers beat the New York Yankees.
Well, we (the Bronx Bombers) couldn't win 'm all now could we. I know my history and the Dodgers, aka. dem bums, had some pretty good talent and even more terrific fans. Maybe, just maybe, they were the best baseball fans ever. I know the Brooksies loved their team. And I am a Yankee fan. But I call it as I see 'em.
Either way, Yankee or Dodger, we're fans. In the end that's good. Hope you'd agree.
And maybe we'll see the Dodgers and Joe Torre in the new Stadium in the World Series.
I applaud the Brooklyn dodgers for winning thier first ever world series against the Yankees in 55 but if you add all the times Yankees met the dodgers in the world series you'll get 11 times and Yankees won 8 out of those 11. I dont know if its just me but i think the old teams were better than the present and im 13 . I love baseball!Oh and i wish the dodgers would have stayed in brooklyn. GO YANKS!!!

I grew up in the NY area as a Yankee fan during the 50s and 60s. I consider myself lucky to have seen what I consider one of the greatest ballplayers ever play in Yankee Stadium.
What gives you or anybody else the right to tell anybody how to spend their money, regardless of what the economic climate is? We may not have won a WS for a while, but the Steinbrenners spend money because they're devoted to winning. Spending a lot of money doesn't necessarily equate to winning but at least we make the effort. I wish I could say the same for the KC's, Baltimores, Torontos and Texases of the league who blame us for their mediocrity instead of themselves where it REALLY belongs.
I know, I wish he could have. Can you imagine how many home runs he would have finished with? However, if you look at his subpar (for him) stats from 1965-1968 combined with the fact that he could barely run at all, he didn't have much choice except retire.
