"Writing about music is like dancing about architecture." An interesting quote, but I disagree(sort of). While it may be difficult to reduce a piece to its core components, there is so much to be gained by trying. Analyzing "good" music tells us a lot about our own psychology.
It's possible to explain why people might like it, which is the same of explaining why it's "good", because "good" refers to the listeners opinion of it.
a few pages ago, someone said "you have to understand this kind of music to like it" which, while being absolutely true, is to a high degree arrogant as fuck. consider for a moment the presumption and elitism implied. it's a shame that we cannot in human language express how much more electronic music has to offer the mind, without resorting to using such statements.
it's like to trying to explain the depth of a rothko or the beauty of a kandinsky.
"it's like to trying to explain the depth of a rothko or the beauty of a kandinsky."
Something wrong with this? ALL works of art were intended to be interpreted. Only by trying to "explain" the purpose and meaning of the art do we gain a true understanding of it. It's also much more enjoyable that way.
@skulleton explanation and interpretation are two different things. i'm talking about how it is not possible to "explain" why this track, for example, is so good.
@skulleton why might people like it? i don't think it is possible to explain that. electronic music is less emotional than it is abstract and intellectual and, when asked, i cannot explain to people why i am passionate about it. i am always at a loss for words. the most i can muster is maybe "it's just GOOD." , or "because it's art."
a computer and a sampler is all you need to make this music, just buy a good sampler an esx a mpc just do it, trust me, learn it like a guitar, practice, you can do it.
@skulleton Umm, I think he was making an ironic juxtaposition to the macho bragging prevalent in certain music genre cultures. I don't believe that he thinks superficial characteristics have any outcome on the quality of the music, I certainly don't. I found it funny anyway.
He was clearly referencing Paradinas' "nerdy" look, and asserting that people like him (nerds, of course) make great music. I see this all the time in video game culture, kids with their puerile need to claim musical heroes, because they usually lack these figures in their culture. Oh, and try to make grammatical/semantical sense when you type something. Otherwise you just sound pretentious.
there are techniques to achieve these sounds but to summerise...
These are common breaks, if you dont recognise them you need to check out your sampleing history ;)
the hits have been chopped up and re-sequenced, re-pitched, processed then automated. The man has had decades to home his skill... which is obvious when heard.
As for the snare... time-stretching - for this youll need a sampler (prefferably hardware) different machines produces different sounds ;)
Sometimes a style comes along that defies all attempts to categorize it. I've always felt this way about mu-sic. It's like abstract percussive poetry.
he is such a genius, truly. i got into IDM with him first and to tell you the truth, his stuff is so much better to write rap(poetry) then any others, except for seefeel and BOC
... to this sight to hear this awesome song! Dang, I don't know what you were thinking but you have a nasty mind if you thought that was inappropriate. WOW.
it's not appropriate to not finish sentence is what I was saying. Sick mind? I don't know what you are talking about. i just don't think it's cool to not finish a sentence.
