I think versatility is great, but irrelevant for discussing great guitarists. Great guitarists tend to have recognisable styles, which to an extent requires some consistency. If you throw versatility into the equation it's difficult to draw lines anywhere
i have to agree with ddensu tbh slash is overrated its his image that mainly carrys him and he has got a unique sound and style but its not amazing there alot of better guitar players out by far in all genres hes just a gd mainstream player

All these players are versatile, creative, and original.
They can play various styles and techniques and even different instruments.
Steve Hackett (Toto), Steve Howe (Yes), Brian May (Queen), Daryl Stuermer (Genesis), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Steve Rothery (Marillion), Frank Gambale, Alex Lifeson (Rush), Allan Holdsworth, etc.

I think versatility is great, but irrelevant for discussing great guitarists. Great guitarists tend to have recognisable styles, which to an extent requires some consistency. If you throw versatility into the equation it's difficult to draw lines anywhere

i have to agree with ddensu tbh slash is overrated its his image that mainly carrys him and he has got a unique sound and style but its not amazing there alot of better guitar players out by far in all genres hes just a gd mainstream player

@jordno Not really, it was his work with GNR, back in the day they got huge because the were the real deal. There was a TON of competition in Los Angeles and to rise above them all was an amazing feat.

i dunno who you are replying too but john petrucci is a millions times better than slash... to be honest slash is not really that great at all.. even petrucci is not that great compared to a lot of guitarist out there... slash is such a tool if he would wear his fucking guitar like a normal person he wouldnt have to hold it like in this video when he attempts to play something thats not power chords or of the like.

Uh, EVH was NOT one of his BIGGEST influences, maybe an influence(cuz i mean after the van halen explosion what guitarist doesnt know a van halen song?) but EVH definetly isnt a big one. If that was the case then we would see a lot of tapping and tremelo picking in Slash's playing.

I luv slash, but EVH is the greatest of all time.!....if you want a sample of the genius of EVH, listen to a good recording of "runaround". Rhythym, soul, solo, songwriting...don't get me wrong, I am not taking away any brilliance from Slash...just listen to what Slash himself has to say about EVH.

Im not saying that Slash hasnt said anything about his experience with the VH style of playing. But, Slash can say all he wants but what really matters is whats shown(heard) in his playing. I dont hear MUCH EVh influence in any of his work. And no EVH isnt the greatest of all time. Hes just a flashy guitarist is all. i love musicians. VH is all im playing in my free time right now but im able to admit he isnt the best

Hey BackSlash...EVH does exactly what he needs to do for his solos. Are you saying he cannot do anything but tap? Don't think there is much tapping in right now or "runaround" or "top jimmy". You think tapping sounds bad?
I know people talk about his solos and tapping alot. but most of his genius is in songwriting and riffs.Except for the occational cover song, EVH wrote all of VH songs ( very diverse over the yrs.
Anyway, take care. You can't have bad taste if you love Slash .
