i was a course VI student at MIT and completed my BS n MS frm there nd i was invited fr a few lectures at Harvard.....i must admit Harvard has provided some facilities that i did nt have at MIT ....but that made me learn alot better....coz kids at Harvard mostly r like 'oh ya! we've seen it ,done it'.... a very wrong perspective for any engineering student......n ya MIT has its own X factor that neither Stanford or Harvard has or ever will hav!!
Harvard is not the best buisness...but what do rankings really matter? Shit, if you're top 25 in anything, your top notch. The Ivies do attract such a diverse student body that its a whole different experience, but I doubt the actually level of education (accross all disciplines, not exclusively or necessarily engineering) from Harvard to Stanford to Duke to Ann Arbor to Rice whatever differes that much.
As a MIT Course 1 student who attended many cross registration classes at Harvard, I got to say Harvard is definitely not on the same horizon with MIT. @echoofsilence regarding to the Ranking chart, you missed Georgia Tech, a much better school then Illinois.
Honestly, MIT seems better to me since I have been an international exchange student from Puerto Rico to MIT and Harvard never really caught my attention...I have to say though...in general, it's pretty much the same everywhere you go, the only difference is the professors in all honesty, but the books are all the same, the same thing is being taught all across the country, from Caltech to Harvard to MIT...
What is the "stereotypical" engineering experience supposed to be? I also love the way you make an argument that people should go to Harvard rather than MIT because the people are really cool because
1. That has nothing to do with the quality of education
2. That is not true at all, everyone knows that you are more likely to find a stuck up person at Harvard than MIT.
harvard has good quality? good quality what? dude, you obviously have never been part of Harvard. the attitude of academia there is "we are harvard, we are giving you a degree . be grateful. it gives us license to teach like crap. " it is one of the things larry summers tried to rectify. look it up. MIT places more emphasis on good pedagogy.
MIT is very big in engineering compared to Harvard but its quality is not as uniformly good as Harvard. People sometimes get surprised when they hear that in terms of research impact, Harvard is currently ranked No. 1 in engineering!
lol not uniformly good? u think harvard is uniformly good? harvard suffers from grade inflation n so much more... our engineering courses are much better
