  • This song was not meant to have any sort of meaning, be it political, racial, or anything else. It was based on a comic strip Neil Peart read that featured trees arguing like people. But that's the point of music isn't it? Take from it a meaning that means something to you.

  • im pretty sure that if you read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley it might clear up what the debate is, the song is kind of on the same idea path as that book, what happens when we are all the same?

  • Love the growl from that Rickenbacker bass!

  • everytime i hear The Trees on the radio, I BLAST the shit out of the speakers.

    LONG LOVE RUSH =D

  • This song basically means that people are like trees. All different. There are maples and oaks but a tree is a tree. Like people are just people. No different, no better :)

  • @Dexstaa not so. the trees do not represent people. they represent classes of people. and they represent them as generic groups of the have and have not. you are supposed to feel sorry for the maples and hate the oaks. feel sorry for the poor and hate the rich. you are not supposed to see individual trees because the forest is in the way. in the end, all are cut down so they can be equal. no big trees anymore, just stumps. less than half of what they all were. poor by liberal government decree.

  • @magedogtag I can understand that!. Makes more sense being stated like that. I'm not very good with words though lol. Thanks for the info though. I love how their music makes me think and think and even when i think i got it i dont. :)

  • @magedogtag no the song is about people not having proper freedoms that have been "granted" to them like the revolutionary war its about not having the freedom they wanted

  • @shippo135790ableable i would be inclined to agree with you if it weren't for the final line- "... they passed a noble law, and the trees are all kept equal by hatchet, axe and saw." that's not about freedom, it's about forced equality. freedom is about being able to grow as tall as you can, not being cut to a stump so everyone is equal. freedom is a guarantee of opportunity, not outcome. no opportunity and everyone has the same outcome. usually poverty and destitution.

  • great song - nice copy

  • Its just a good song. now, does anyone know what they are singing about???

  • @MSPLASTICME I never read what Neil meant by the song. Basically the oaks are taking up the maples sunlight so they form a union and the oaks are cut down so they are equal. Put your own metaphors to it.

  • @brauncolliton wtf!

  • This song is tricky to play it keeps changing time signatures and tempo.

  • I'm am really fucking sick of little shitheads writing stupid comments like "im only 11 and this song is fucking awesome" Seriously shut the fuck up no one cares. Rad song btw

  • Woah your a mistaken mother fucker if you think this is for older people :P I understand it perfectly and as kudos im working on a bass cover for this song :3

  • fuck off all the people who think that this song is for older people

  • stop talkin about how this is for older ppl, im 12 and i understand this song and like it!

  • lol.. amazing song.. but not the vault edition.. but other ppl already called it :D good to see other rush fans

  • hemispheres =best album of all time

  • The best part is 0:00-4:45.

  • Oh and the opening riff remins me of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". lol

  • Absolutely the best Canadian band ever. No Canadian artist can even come close to being as good as rush. Also the best selling Canadian band in world wide sales. Avril, Celine, Bryan, and Shania collectively suck in comparison.

  • @albertabeef73 You left out Sarah McLachlan. And Triumph (Rush knock-off). And William Shatner (yes, he 'sings' - Google or YouTube it... if you dare...). I actually LIKE most of those (well, not Avril or Bill Shatner), but they pale in comparison to Rush. Rush is AWESOME.

  • @musicalman77 LMFAO Bill Shatter's verion of "Rocket Man" is funny as hell. I think he was on really good(or bad) drugs for that one. And ya thanks for remining me of those other 2, but Capt Kirk is still better than Sarah "I used to be east coast now I'm west coast" McLachlan lol. Wasent she from NS? But I see her on the BC ads all the time, strange eh? But lets just say the "Guess Who" and Niel Young fight for 2nd and 3rd behind Rush. Kim Mitchell and GBS fight for for 4th and 5th sadly lol.

  • Amazing song and lyrics. Wonder if they ever play this at the united nations? Perhaps in the elevators or in the cafateria, ha ha.

  • This song was really annoying...no offense but in rock band 2 it kept playing and playing and i like it :D

  • OMFG THIS SONG GIVES ME AN EARGASM

  • And this, my friends, is what Socialism means.......

  • And this is why Socialism is dangerous to our Liberty.........

  • Something by Yes? Led Zep? Heart? It's kind of a common riff... could be almost anything.

  • @musicalman77 Yes is my favorite band.

  • Okay...I think i like this song, but i can't be sure.... XD

  • this is the studio version

  • could be stairway to heaven.

  • What exactly is the difference between the Vault Edition and the Original? Sounds good anyway.

  • @ldave16l The Vault edition is actually the version from the video on the chronicles DVD.

  • Rush is the best band ever dont boo rush you bastard :S

Play better if YOU can haha!

    RUSH IS THE BEST!!! :D

  • yes this is the studio version. In the vault edition, Geddy's bass has more distortion

  • I am 10000% sure this is is the studio version, not the vault edition. Listen to Geddy's voice. Also, the vault edition has an extended guitar outro.

  • @Ant423 Yeah dude, it's definitely not the vault edition at all.

  • Sure sounds like the original CD version to me...

  • @jbc455 Not to give away my age, but I think you mean the "original" vinyl LP version (the way I first heard it!) God, I'm getting old...

  • I still have that beautiful 12" vinyl masterpiece. :)

  • @jbc455 Bad news... that probably means YOU are getting old TOO! (:^p) (Because you said "STILL have...") But there is a new generation of vinyl fans - 22 y.o. kid in my office collects vinyl! I still have all my old vinyl LPs & 45s too!

  • @musicalman77 im 17 and ive been collecting since 15. :D and i have many friends who do too :D

  • @POIStudios Yeah, a guy at my work is like 22 and collects vinyl too. Nice to see the "kids" getting in on it, but what is causing the attraction? Is it the larger cover and album notes, or the 'imperfect' non-digital music or what???

  • @musicalman77 Well, I think it sounds just a LITTLE better. Plus the fact that its a giant 12" cover helps too. And on top of that, it's fun to brag about. Oh, and also it costs less than CD's. :D
