  • 0:35-0:55: Sounds just like the beginning of Galaga Game Over theme!! :D

  • For the lulz brought me here :D

  • For Lisa Globetopper and Galaxy Girl...

  • well... It is so sad, that young people do not enjoy classical musical as much. I find it to be a beautiful genre. YOUNG PEOPLE : LISTEN, ENJOY, AND LEARN FROM THE CLASSICS. You will have a better cultural background. And, classical music is the basis of music. I love it. (: And I'm not afraid to hide it.

  • @flutemusic55 I'm 19 and not a fan of classical music. It all sounds the same to me, and this is from someone who generally likes something from every genre. One thing I do find, though, is that I enjoy classical music far more when it's played on electronic instruments. I heard a Bach fugue done on keyboard synths and I loved it. Daft Punk have done the same thing and I love that. I really think this is the way to get youth into it.

  • @xXRubella666Xx Interesting. For me I love music from most genres, but nothing compares to classical music. It generally has far more depth and subtly than popular music & ultimately elicits a much greater emotional response in me. It does however, require an investment in time. Classical music pieces sometimes need to be listened to 5-10 times before one "gets" the piece. A big difference is that pop music is 'hearing' while classical music is 'listening'. Classical is not background amusement.

  • 2 people accidentally hit the dislike button.

  • if people want the sheet music for this, try imslp.org, its on there

  • @brass9001 that's my favorite site. :D

  • I'm more into rock music. That said, I do like this, as well, because it reminds me of going through the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City en route to visiting my home state of New Jersey.

  • Does anyone else imagine a whole story in their heads to each movement?

  • Everytime I hear this piece I think of the movie Fantasia. :-)

  • Ah, how refreshing. I love classical, electronic, jazz, trip hop, hip hop, rap, techno, house, classic rock, progressive rock, bossa nova, and some metal. But there is a time for each, and you need to vary your selection. The Planets is definitely a nice change of pace from the regular stuff I listen to.

Classical, house, jazz, and electronic will always have a special place in my heart though. I've always thought that the Howl's Moving Castle soundtrack was particularly amazing.

  • Im a Metalhead, spend most of my time listening to Metallica haha. But i have to admit that even though this is such a contrast to what i would usually listen too all 7 movements are one of the most amazing things ive ever heard :D

  • @twasmuthguitarplayer You, sir, are win. :-)

  • @twasmuthguitarplayer I transitioned into classical music from metal. I think that that you will find that Classical music has more depth than metal. I still listen to metal that I consider to be good, but I'm really picky lol. Classical has more to offer you than you can imagine at this point, trust me on that. Listen to the first movement of Bach's Harpsichord Concerto No.1 I bet you'll like it!

  • @TheDavid2222 Classical is the only genre that can TRULY run the entire gamut of human emotion. I find all other genres of music have "blind spots." Even metal, and this is coming from someone who likes the stuff. :-p

  • i loved this one.

  • I like this, and I like Hermes of Greek mythology.I think it captures his characteristic well.He is hard to figure out like a wind, and has various faces. This piece is comical and charming.

  • In my opinion, the brass band arrangment is better, it's absolutely electric!

  • mischievous, acts innocent (reminds me of Jerry in Tom and Jerry, even though that was almost 3 years ago...)

  • @violin4ever1 nice description. I think you're onto something. No baloney.

  • mischievous, acts innocent (reminds me of Tom and Jerry, even though that was almost 3 years ago...)

  • describes hermes or the roman god mercury perfectly

  • @violin4ever1 I agree, it really does describe Hermes/Mercury well.

  • sounds like it would be in harry potter haha xD

  • I love this piece of music and the entire works. I love the calling between the instruments with the message! Such genius work. If I could write music like this I would be proud to be called a nerd! Unfortunately I am just a geek who plays this kind of music and loves Science way too much. But who cares about the nerd war as long as you have fun in life what does it matter what you are called. It is a round robin of name calling, everyone judges everyone else just don't take it seriously guys!

  • To all fans of Gustav Holst. I salute you. You know a good thing when you hear it.

  • The only reason band nerds are still around is that the drumline guys protect them ;)

  • @MclarencarV

The drumline kids at my school (most of them, anyway) are completely retarded. The only thing I need protection from is their stupidity.

  • @freshhh1994 Not every drumline is like that. Mine certainly isn't.

  • @MclarencarV You sir are "Meat With Eyes" lol

  • @FromanMD Ha, but I'm a marimbist, not a drummer, so I retain some intelligence, unlike our brawny snare drummers. :)

  • 1:35 is amazing

  • The meek shall inherit the earth and the band nerds will inherit the planets. WOOT

  • Quote "The answer to life the universe and everything = 42" Douglas Adams Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, the only five book trilogy in existence.

    :) Wonderful piece of music

  • GRAN OBRA DE HOLST

  • Definition of a nerd: Someone who is interested in things which aren't degrading society. For example, Music, Science, other Arts.

  • @FredIsMyName22 Bloody phillistine.

  • @FredIsMyName22 I could not disagree more with your definition of nerd. One can be a nerd and be interested in other things.

  • @Feldenstar Things which are degrading to society?

  • @FredIsMyName22 Possibly... If you consider bronies nerds... then yes. I have a friend who is a nerd, he also is a hacker.

  • @Feldenstar Hacking is Science. Bronies aren't degrading. They're not things like Jersey Shore or Fox News.

  • I am a physicist, and an amateur clarinet player; the entire Planets suite by Holst is an excellent mindset to go into deep thought about Space, the Universe and Everything.

  • this song makes me think of traveling through vast lands on a never ending edventure

  • @aidansayshi123456789 woops, adventure

  • Gustav Holst wrote and composed ALL of the planets in my school.

  • im gonna perform this next year X3

  • can be about anything you want it to be. and, at rory, if it was at WWI it would be even less believable.

  • if you said ww1 i might have believed you. but seriously come on

  • During World War II, the United Kingdom used about 250,000 homing pigeons.

  • @Seiku well the planets suite was composed before ww2, so really my comment was valid.

  • True

  • oh my gosh! i love the planets suite! does anyone have the sheet music?

  • Well my band is playing mars, jupiter, and venus, but I only have the trumpet sheet music for myself.

  • you'd have to buy it. Also, it was originally composed as a piano duet, so you could try looking for that.

  • Nope, it's not very famous, so you will never find the sheet music anywhere ever. Seriously, just try google.

  • @boshiba1 you can buy the full score online. I actually picked mine up at border's for about 16 bucks. Its a great sturdy copy

  • Note to spencerphreak:

It *was*,of all people, The Much Regretted Frank Zappa..who *did* say in his autobio..he did not care who the artiste was "It was ALL GOOD MUSIC!"

And *that* is telling it like it REALLY is, m8!

  • this piece was used as the backing music in the old Commodore 64 game "Caverns of Eriban." cool huh.

  • prove it

  • Nerds usually end up being the most successful as adults.

  • you can say that again

  • Charictoristics of tv steriotype nerds beccause our country is anti intellectual.

  • haha funny stereotype =D i know exactly what kinda people u mean =P

  • The question then becomes, What defines a nerd? Because I know plenty of people with a high intellect who love music like this and do just fine in other aspects of their lives

  • @Channibis Well, I fit that bill. I won't say I have high intellect because it sounds narcissistic. Most nerds don't like talking to normal everyday people and have "the inability to communicate with others" is usually because we don't like talking to idiots. Lastly, what is wrong with having an abnormal school life. Do you think Bill Gates went out and got wasted and partied until he dropped? I doubt it. I think he was following his passion, and did a damn fine job in life.

  • Can anyone tell me the exact recording this is and if it's available on CD? I've sampled several of the ones listed on Amazon but none have the same feel as this one. Thank you.

  • If you like this particular version you can download it straight from here, just Google how to download movies from Youtube.

  • This piece is amazing! I saw this live, and it was a great experience. And what's all the talk of nerds, by the way? If having proper education and good musical taste makes someone a nerd, then I'm proud to be one =).

  • im proud to be a nerd to then lol

  • @freakanoid123 NERD! :p jk

  • As you should be. This piece is awesome. I would also count myself among the number of "nerds" fitting this definition :-p

  • @freakanoid123 could you please replace having a good musical taste with liking classical music? because people all disagree on the music taste thing

  • to be someone who understands music, doesn't make you a nerd at all..for example a long time ago everyone listened to classical music and musicals as that's practically all there was

  • ye true

  • Mercury is my second favorite of the Planet suite, mainly because the cello part in Jupiter is so much fun to play.

  • people who listen to this arent nerds, we just enjoy the beauty of music. :)

  • no we're nerds but aint nothin wrong with that

  • true dat, true dat ;)

  • What is "nerd"?

  • whenever in doubt, my friend, look it up on wikipedia =)

cuz thats what nerds do *hint*

  • lol true

  • Beware the internet. Jus' cuz' it's at wiki doesn't make it tru. I've seen errors there, and not just once. Not that it is a bad source of info, but one must look further to be sure what you see is what is correct.

  • best piece of internet advice i've heard. ever

  • God I love the bassoon parts, although I play clarinet and saxophone I aspire to play bassoon just to play this song.

  • Hey, Badnews88! Newsflash! Mars is the best! Of course, we have to play Jupiter in band, But mars is still the best. Along with Pluto. Anyone who likes those should also listen to Roswell 1947. You have to type Roswell 1947 Band and its the first one

  • Aren't nerds those little neon-coloured sweeties that made you hyper as a kid? I'd prefer to call myself a geek...

  • Great piece.

  • Note to Resistanceband (And whomever else it may concern):

If getting *really heavy* into classical music (despite my similar love for Metal, Motown, Country, Alternative, etc.) makes me a 'nerd'...then SO BE IT!

Mercury, by the way, is one of my BIG rave-faves in the entire collection of themes; The other being Neptune.

    Thanx fer it, m8's...

  • Don't be ashamed of your metal/motown/country side. Good music is good music is good music, no matter what instruments are playing the same notes.

  • Still, while regular folk claim they are "moved" by certain movies, surprise surprise the music which enlivens the film is classical. Could you imagine Hilary Duff providing the soundtrack to Once Upon Time in America? Oh and yes, I'm part nerd. But who wants to be just another retard anyway?

  • Ahhh, if all who listen to this is a nerd....you've been un-closeted!!! Welcome!!!! Nanu nanu!!!!

  • 1:37 is epic... my favorite part! gives me chills everytime i listen to or play it. it's so passionate.

  • 1:36 - listen to that.

  • One of the best pieces of the Suite, BUT I think that I can say this about all the pieces actually. ;D I'ts just really good!

  • What's up with the celesta playing an octave lower?

  • my favorite part is after 1:00 with the strings

  • Its so short compared to the others!

  • That's what she said! Hahahaaa...I'm a nerd...

  • I'd had my suspicions...I want to go read a Star Wars book now.-The list of books I've read and enjoyed would definitely give me away as a major nerd.

  • Amen to that...

  • deep down man... this is were "Ur" music came from. so respect it. A LOT more talent in this "nerdy" music then in urs =P

  • I'm a nerd.......... :) ...... :|

  • I like the allusion to telegraph signals in this piece. It may have been a little too obvious back then, but not today.

  • Oh, I like this!

It makes me think of leaves fluttering down from trees.

    Weird as that sounds.

    =]

  • nice one

  • A great piece. It reminds me very much of the soundtrack from a Hitchcock film - I think its Vertigo or Marnie.

  • This is one of my favorite pieces from the whole composition. So flittery and fluttery. It really does seem like you're flying. ^^

  • Great piece.
